What strings would you recommend for a Squier SE Special Strat? Someone suggested Bullets, and the E string the guitar came with is a bit buzzy at the moment.

I personally say, look at an emulator like the POD, or try a rack into a speaker cab, I play that way for quiet volume in an apt setting. You can always go to headphones or into a recorder this way as well.

My POD XT is great for home recording, I tend to use it a lot for song writing. I'd really recommend it to anyone with interest in that department to invest into it despite that I've never really used anything else. It does its job well though.

If I'm not playing through the POD, I'm using my Marshall VS265 + Cab + Head icon14.gif

You mean fret buzz?

If you're wondering what strings would eliminate the buzz then your asking the wrong question as its most likely your guitar.

If your just asking because you're looking for some good quality strings it really depends on what you play.

Is it a new guitar? If so, it probably needs to be setup. You can always take it to a professional since you could damage the guitar if you don´t know what you´re doing. That should get rid of the fret buzz. icon14.gif

As for strings, it all depends on the player. The higher the gauge, the better the tone your guitar produces. This also increases the tension, so the guitar becomes difficult to play as you increase the gauge. .009-.042 sets (Ernie Ball Super Slinky´s, for example) are good if you´re just starting.

Yeah, if you tend to play a lot of drop-tuned stuff, thicker sets are definitely the way to go. As for any particular brand, you just have to really buy a load and see which ones fit you the most. It's extremely dependant on your style and what you play.

This is a bit of a bump, I'm sorry, but I've been in Nashville these last few days.

I just got a Gibson SG Standard. I love it.

I had Charles Hoffman Guitars go over my 87 USA BCR Bich and they redressed the fret board, which I had attempted myself, with boiled linseed oil, but they did an even better job!!

It's Rosewood, but it looks new, and I love the look and feel... the buzz was all taken out and the action set low again. Only real problem is a bridge set screw broke (Kahler) and was replaced with the only spare, which is too tall..it scrapes the right hand when playing, if you rest it on the bridge, and I need to remedy that at some point.

Also need a Black Kahler Pro trem for the Ironbird I have.

Dammit, I just busted my E string. Now I have a "J" whipped into the back of my hand.

My own High Es always break most often when I am trying to tune that one up if I think it's too low, then it just winds up breaking. I play in standard tuning, but I likely have each one set somewhat different because I tune to the High or Low E, all of the others! haha biggrin.gif

Blind Joe Death

Never posted in here before despite being a dedicated guitar lover and player. I've been playing acoustic for three years and have recently transfered over to the electric guitar.

The choice shouldn't be hard at all. You can always eliminate at least one guitar from that list by repeating what features you want on a guitar.

Classic (Schenker) or modern shape (Jack/Dave)?

Floyd (Jackson) or fixed bridge (Mustaine)?

Bernard Jazz

Found myself a bargain today.

5 string bass, 24 frets, twin humbuckers for £120.. needless to say I bought it, absolutely love the natural finish.

Good God, that headstock.

It's a warwick clone, I'm not a huge fan of warwick necks but that's a good deal.

So my mom has a friend who's selling her guitar. It's a Dean Evo Deluxe. Anybody know about these? Are they any good? She's selling it cheap, and it's always good to have an extra axe in your arsenal. wink.gif

I have the BCR Biches, three in all and one Ironbird. Almost got my hands on a genuine 1977 Mockingbird. The golden age for hand made BC Rich guitars. BTW, Bernie Rico Sr passed away and his son took over for a time, then it was a relative of Rick Derringer who I think still runs the company in some capacity. Been awhile since I kept tabs.

In the 70s, there was a small crew of Mexican and American workers in Hesperia and ElMonte California building these without aid of computers and each one bore the mistakes engrained in the process.... It's why you don't see them travelled much at all, but used in studios and at home. I get the feeling too many are stored as collectors pieces.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm thinking of getting a decent, fairly cheap acoustic guitar. I'm talking below £250 preferably, not exactly cheap, but I don't want a plank of wood with some strings running along it. I like cutaway designs, since I'm probably going to be using the upper frets. I'll be playing some chord-driven songs as well as some finger-picking, once I get good at it.

A worker at a guitar shop in town showed me loads today. My favourite was a Yamaha APX500 in a Deep Sunburst colour scheme, for £199. I also liked a black Takamine one, but that might have been a bit big for me really. Not only could I have looked a bit small playing it, but it would be difficult to adjust to playing it, and I think it was higher-priced than the Yamaha. Regardless, any ideas what model it is? All I know is that it was a black cutaway Takamine with cream binding.

Also, if anybody has a Yamaha APX500, then could you give a brief review of it with it's ups and downs. Also, feel free to suggest any other acoustics.

Don't you find that the cut away ones have less reverb, and lack that fuller bass sound? At least mine does

I dunno, I'm unfortunately no expert on these things. But I really disliked playing on my friend's acoustic and I couldn't access any frets above where the body began. Hence the wanting for a cutaway. I'm just looking for the kind of jingly-jangly, folky, warm sound (musical terms abound!) that gives a nice, gentlee, sing along feel. If I'm making any sense at all. I'm also after an electro-acoustic, if the need for it to be played plugged in arises, and if I ever feel like playing a bit louder.

I just bought an Ovation Applause electro acoustic for 250 euro. The suppliers gave the shop a good deal becuse they got a bulk or something but they're not expensive anyway and although it doesnt have the most amazing sound your going to ever get, it does have a nice sound off it and it's a comfortable, cheap elecro acoustic with a cut away.

Yes i totally agree that it does take a lot of practice to access the higher frets with a 'rounded' guitar, but you do make a trade-off with the acoustic quality. At least that's how i feel, it could just be that my Electro-Acoustic is a bit rubbish, but i do notice a lack of reverb, and you will lose a little 'warmth' but you will still retain your 'jangliness' haha

I've been playing guitar now for about 4 years. I've got an Ibanez JEM 555, but I've lost interest in it recently, and I'd be seriously tempted to sell it for a Strat. I think I've just grown out of it, the initial appeal of it has worn off and I'm not into the Trebly sound it gives any more.

I've also been playing bass guitar for about 6 years. I play in my own band, hoping to make a career out of music if all goes well. I play a Musicman Stingray 2004 edition, and I'm getting a new Stingray 5 string next week, the 20th Anniversary model. I love the Stingray, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It has a great sound for slap bass, and sounds brilliant when played with a pick or fingers. Just an all round awesome guitar.

I'm still in love with my acoustic guitar too. Had it 3 years, bought it for £99 - Yamaha F310, Tobacco Sunburst. It has such a warm tone and plays so well, I love it to bits.

Ah, but does it have jangliness?

I might check with my guitar teacher to see if the APX500 is good, he probs won't know like, but worth a question. My electric guitar is a Maverick F1. Although the high e string is broken and has been for ages now, I hate restringing it, it's such a bitch when it comes to that.

It has a certain degree of jangliness, but when I put new strings on it, it will be mega jangly again biggrin.gif

That guitar looks like it's as annoying as my Ibanez to restring. I'm guessing you have to bust out the alan keys to get the string out? Floyd Roses are great until it comes to restringing...

My sentinments exactly. Break string, out comes the Allen keys, unwind those metal blocks at the end, unwind the locks at the top and take the string off, get replacement string, cut ball off, fit it in the little hole, fix it in place with the metal block, thread it through the lock at the top and wind it around the post, tune up. The tuning then goes on for hours, as each twist of the tuning keys send the other strings slightly out of tune.
