hitandmiss
Here are a couple of things I have tried but I still get owned bad: 1.)parking an Infernus at the first corner 2.) the "pro cornering" trick but I'm not sure I get the hang of it So, how did you guys manage to clear "The Driver"? Any hints and tips to share?
omega_c
First of all: don't switch cars. second: use the E brake (space bar on PC) third... just practice cornering.. get a wanted level and then outrun the cops (when you've got a 2 star wanted level)
hitandmiss
Can I have more details on cornering please? I'm not getting it when Scott MacDowall writes in his faq to "Tap brake, let go of X, and apply it when you've swung around. Do this and you'll corner in half the time he does." Kindly expand on what he means?
omega_c
OK. You're going around a turn. As you start to turn, you hit the handbrake, and stop accelerating. Halfway through the turn, start accelerating again. Thats a simple way. Give me like five minutes and I'll draw something in paint for you. EDIT: Here's a pic. As always, click on it for a larger size. Edited February 21, 2007 by omega_c
hitandmiss
okay thanks for taking the time to get that out! I really appreciate it and I'll try to give this a 2nd shot using just the corner technique with the Sentinel. I just realized there's plenty of alternate methods outlined by A.K.A's faq but I want to see if I can master this pro cornering method first. Glad to help Spend a half an hour and get this down, it'll really help you in any mission/when you're getting chased by the cops. I recommend a cheetah to practice with; it corners well, doesn't drift/slide too much, and it's fast. If you still can't beat it, and you use a PC, there is a Save N Play thread somewhere in the Vice City forum. Just post here if you need more help; I check the Vice City forum a lot . hitandmiss
I think a lot of this mission boils down to luck. What happens if i.) a car comes in from a corner just AFTER Hillary makes the turn but you don't? Crash. ii.) A Police squad car comes in just from the opposite lane as Hillary overtakes a car in front of you, leaving you with no room to maneuver. Uber crash. iii.) Squad Cars just ram into you to rob you of a checkpoint even if you are leading, giving Hillary the lead. There's a 101 things that can and will go wrong with The Driver. No kidding this is the toughest mission of all and even trying to locate the Esperande wasn't this frustrating. You have to be perfect, you simply cannot allow a single mistake. One crash= reload. I'm on the ps2, I gave up trying to get my PC version to work on my old computer. Edited February 21, 2007 by hitandmiss

Don't switch cars, do the turns nicely, and you'll win by a mile. I crashed 2-3 times and beat it.
hitandmiss
Feel free to disagree. Switching cars is one of the tactics recommended by various other players. I have yet to unlock the Hotring Racer so I'm trying to see if I can beat it using the Sentinel. Regarding crashing, I noticed something very unfair to the player. If the crash is quickly rectified and you are still on Hillary's tail, yes there is a small chance you can win. However, if the crash is not given a fast recovery and Hillary is out of the screen, chances are very slim as there is no radar to track his progress and whatever traps and obstacles the player is facing Hillary will not be around to soak them in too. In other words, once he is out of the screen Hillary will not make a mistake at all! <-- This is what players are counting on to gain the lead on his much faster car. omega_c
Just so you know, there are two ways to unlock the hotring racer; Through sunshine autos, or through beating the hotring race at the stadium. Anyways, I guess switching cars can help, but I was never able to beat it that way. I tried probably... 10+ times, couldn't beat it, and then I decided not to switch cars and won in like 2-3 races after that. That was a few years ago, but it still stands
hitandmiss
Here's something strange. I got my Hotring Racer after completing the Sunshine Autos but whenever I park it near the first corner at the bridge, it always disappears when I initiate "The Driver"!! Was this one of the changes that was made to the Trilogy Pack of Vice City? No HotRing Racer to be used in The Driver? EDIT: I finally cleared this crazy batsh*t of a mission man with the Sentinel! No gimmicks, no Hotring Racer just finally the odds came in my favor as he crashed and spun a few more times than I did.... wow I hope this NEVER turns up in future GTA games again. For the record I probably tried 100+ times no kidding. Edited February 22, 2007 by hitandmiss
radioman
"The Driver" is by far one of the toughest missions in the game, but if you do do the trick of switching cars after the race, when you park the car to prepare it, make sure you hold a directional button as you exit, thus leaving the door open (the arrow buttons on PC and the left analoge stick on ps2), and when returning to the malibu, run there on foot so the car doesn't disappear. if you fail to leave the door open or you get in another car before starting the mission, the car will disappear. On another note, there is a glitch (at least on PC anyway) where Hillary gets stuck in the bridge between Rosenberg's office and star island that gives you first place, but most of the time it causes you to fail the mission and then the game freezes up. This happens to me almost all the time, and when I get to the finish line it says "mission failed-hillary died" and the only way I can seem to pass it is by using Demerst's Time Vault Code Tool, but that wouldn't help you due to being on the ps2. It just takes practice and ALOT of LUCK to pass this mission. Hope this helps.

radioman
I don't get why everyone says its so horrible... It's all in the corners... Work on that for rampages In my opinion, it is horrible because of the glitch I posted in my second paragraph, the one that almost always causes me to fail the mission. Although I did not discover the glitch, I read about it on another site, but i forgot which one.
omega_c
Easy solution: Restart the mission What platform does that happen on? It's never happened to me... I've blown up his car on purpose...but that didn't help...
bitsandpieces
No need to switch cars. Learn the track, then you have to time it correctly, at the first left turn, if you are close enough, ram him just enough as he's making the turn, without missing the turn yourself, that way, he'll miss the turn and go straight, but you make the turn and keep going on your route. By the time he turns around and resumes behind you, if you don't crash or make mistakes, you should do just fine. Watch out for the cop car trying to ram you, at the right turn past the hospital, slow down just enough to miss him. Go steady and carefull, not too fast, or mistakes will happen. Good luck! oipolloi
The best solution is don't try any fancy tricks, just drive! i tried all the sh*t like getting a different car, sniping his tyres and that. In the end i just floored it and kept my eye on the road, watch out for cop cars coming towards you, and be careful of two crashing into each other before a hairpin. Just ignore Hillary altogether and try and get around the track at the fastest speed without crashing into the cops, and you'll win before you know it
Ramzy
I beat it by simply knocking him off the road. Thanks to the stupid AI, he was left driving into a pole for 30 seconds. Also, if he ever did get behind me, i would simply wait for an oncoming cop car, then quickly swerve out of its way at the last second, thus causing the two to crash head on. edit: Gah, totally misread the post. Sorry. It's 2 am here =( Edited April 7, 2007 by Ramzy
Cyc2u
I feared The Driver mission after reading these boards. But i beat it in 2 tries. Not by my driving skill at all, but by the same way i won most of the races at Sunshine Auto, just sitting back, driving casually and watching the whacked out AI do its thing. The main key is to stay behind but dont let the opponent out of your sight. This keeps other cars spawning on the road in front of him and its only a matter of time before hes smashed and stuck against a wall. If he gets out of your sight then I think the road is empty (the game doesnt generate new cars on the road out of your seeing range) so the AI can get through the course without smashing. So keep him in sight and youll soon get a chance to whiz by. Once you get by, dont mess up. Use the same method in all GTA races. The only one it didnt work for me on was SAs Farwell My Love. Youre given a super fast car, but, youre in the country! OUCH! The AI are no slouches either, that was the toughest race in GTA history IMO. Lots of people have trouble with this mission... I honestly don't recall if I ever beat that mission using the car they give you.. I always switch cars now.... my first time through, I couldn't pass it.... I completed the mission with a 4 star wanted level (got the stars before starting the mission)--- hillary's tires get popped and/or he is blocked by the police roadblocks... It took me 3 cars to complete the race and I had a slow time... but passed it... Tommy Dickfingers
Don't try to get in front straight away, just bide your time for the first stretch. Try to maintain a constant speed, as this will make it easier to avoid cops and to keep up with Hillary. On the first turn, it is sometimes possible to bash him here, but it's not always worth the gamble. If you haven't got in front of him, just stay on his tail until the last checkpoint, where you go over the little bridge by the pizza place. Take the shortcut across the grass (where the police bribe is) as this shaves a couple of seconds off and is probably the only shortcut you can take in the race. Ring_of_Fire
Here's a tip! -> When turning right at the intersection near to the VCPD, make sure you are trying to overtake Hilary at opposite lanes. For some reason, the game's physics won't allow you to get near Hilary's car if you are driving right behind him near to his bumper. Normally at this point, you would want to fish-tail Hilary out of the way once you are getting near to Rafael's. But you should always be in 1st place once you reach Rafael's intersection. All you have to do now is to drive carefully and master the handbrake and steering. If you are not in 1st place when you are at Rafael's, start over the mission (but it is always possible to catch up and beat Hilary when you get a long stretch of road to drive on like when near Ocean Beach's "Ammunation" or Washington Beach's "Bunch of Tools"). Another tip: When at the Rafael's intersection, ram Hilary's Sabre Turbo straight when he is ready to turn left (you should obviously know that the angle you must hit him at has to of course be the front wheels to the left). Sometimes the game's AI messes up, and he will keep hugging at the left wall and will eventually reach a spot where he gets stuck. When this happens, follow him and shoot ALL of the wheels for an easy win! Another tip: Another intersection to allow Hilary's car to get stuck is when you are turning right from Pole Position Club. Straight up you will see grasses and some houses (near to Ocean Heights property) at another dead-end intersection. You must ram Hilary's vehicle there so that he doesn't turn left. Once he get's stuck, shoot ALL of his wheels. Now go into another faster vehicle, if desired. Another tip: The best place to knock out Hilary is on top of the Washington Mall! I'll post a screenshot. Steering tip! -> When trying to take corners and master it just like Hilary. If you want to drive fast at a corner, slow down and steer away from the corner, and then steer to that corner (never use brakes). Sometimes the handbrake is also useful for this, but this is a tip for those who can't master it properly. OK. When there will be 1 2 3 go, type "getthereamazinglyfast" in the f*ckING MENU. get out of the car, get into Hotring, and pwn the opponent's ass. Yeah, along with the "gripiseverything" and "youwontakemealive" codes before starting the mission. But if you were to have guns while driving, couldn't you just shoot at Hilary's wheels with your guns? I haven't done this trick, but it is worth trying or else you might as well get a PCJ-600 bike for easier aiming. And I found this guide too. Another trick is to setup a roadblock at the start, and then shoot Hilary's wheels. But beware that the vehicles may disappear! Snake Without a Tongue
I loathe this mission and it has nothing to do with skill. Cop cars target you in unavoidable ways. The only 'secret' I know is at the main end, taking the shortcut between the palm tree through the police bribe. It gives you a two second advantage. Also, at the first bridge if you hit Hillary hard enough he'll get stuck against the railing for about ten sweet seconds.

Justin
If these screenshot's filesizes are huge, then I'll size it to 320x240 resolution then. Nah, saving them as JPGs is fine. Imageshack's hosting service provides thumbnails, though, so if in doubt they're a good bet. Nice work on derailing Hillary. Did it take long?
