dills
Let me start from the beginning, roughly two weeks ago all of the Microsfot Office programs (Word, Excel etc.) stopped working. I didn't know why so I was going to try unistalling and re-installing, that's when I got the Windows Installer error message - "Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. You may be running in safe mode or Windows Installer may not be correctly installed." So this is preventing me from installing certain programs as well as unistalling some that I would like to, it has also left me without Word etc. which I use all the time for school work. I have tried the solutions Microsoft suggests here but have had no luck as of yet. A computer guy came round a few days ago and suggested re-installing Windows, obviously I would rather not lose all of the stuff on my HDD's. So I'm asking you guys if you've ever encountered this before or have any idea what I can do to fix this issue without having to resort to re-installing Windows. BTW, I'm running Windows XP if that's any help. Any help would be appreciated.
Loman
Have you tried running AVG anti-virus, Spybot Search & Destroy, or any other antivirus/antispyware? if not, you should You could also try putting your windows CD in and doing a repair install. If that doesn't work you may have to reinstall windows completely. If you do have to reinstall windows completely, you can choose "leave filesystem intact" and you won't lose anything, except your windows updates, customization, and you'll have to reinstall most of your programs/games/drivers. You won't lose any documents, music or videos, though. I keep all of my stuff that I need to install on a cd, so I can reinstall windows at any time and be back up and running in only an hour or so. I had this problem before and all it was I accidently deleted a program that required the MSI and I deleted it by right-clicking instead of using the the ADD/Remove method. Anyways this is how I got it fixed. The files that I deleted and that cause this error was located in the "Common Files,"Name of program", Wise Installation(MSI) Solution: In My Computer, click Search and locate the following three files: msi.dll, msiexec.exe, and msihnd.dll. They are hidden files so youll need to select Search Hidden Files And Folders under More Advanced Options. When you've found the files, rename them, by removing the .dll and .exe extensions and replacing them with an .old extension(for example msi.dll becomes msi.old or.Bak). Once youve renamed the files, WinXP will automatically replace them with a new copy from the dllcache (a hidden folder where copies of important system files are kept in case you mistakenly delete or rename critical system files). Restart your computer. Aslong as you replace the required files you will not need to re-install Windows. If you happen to get a Permission warning you will have to do this while in Administrador account. Good Luck!

_-playero-_
Have you played with XP's services? You can read from TweakXP and other sites that disabling services can improve XP's performance. This is true, and great, but in many cases you might disable something you need. Some months ago I was going through MSI problem like you, and the problem was the installer could not start a service because it was disabled. Too bad I can't remember which services are needed the MSI.... Just an idea.
