If my memory serves me correctly (this is one of a million of topics on the issue)... The protagonist is unnamed in GTAIII. He makes an appearance in a cutscene in San Andreas, in which he is referred to as Claude. In GTAII, one of the characters is listed in the credits as Claude Speed. Some bright spark put two and two together and came up with roughly four and a half and the notion that the protagonist in GTAIII is Claude Speed. Even though he is a nameless thug in GTA3, in GTA SA we found out later that his name is Claude - because that's how Catalina calls him. But also, as mentioned, he is called Claude deep within the games programming, probably not on purpose but just as place holder because they weren't what to call him besides just player.
