That's fine, as I'm not that into shoes anyway. I'll definitely check out the games though, lol. I was basically referring to your awesome display case which has a vaguely commercial look to it.

My HTPC:

Vhiv3ZV.jpg

Lenovo Thinkcentre M800, I5 6400, 24gb ram, gt 710 gpu, 250w psu, bluray drive(waiting for a bezel to arrive from china) 250gb OS SSD, 4gb Media Western Digital Red HDD, Windows 10 Pro, Windows XP Media Center era remote and receiver for bluray control in Powerdvd. might throw in a tv tuner.

Mostly used for Plex media server and bluray movie playback, I usually use Teamviewer to access it from my main rig when installing stuff or adding media, ripping blurays as well.

Took a huge risk buying the bluray drive on ebay as it was priced just under $30 and everyone else wanted at least $80 for theirs, the one I received ended up being new.

The computer was given to me only costing me shipping.

I dont think the GT710 is necessary other than connecting it to my tv since the computer only has displayport on it while the 710 has the hdmi I need.

So you recommend PowerDVD? I don't have a Blu-ray drive and had just given up on playing movies via my PC. I have no experience ripping either Blu-rays or DVDs.

Before I switched to Blu-ray I had previously used my PC to play DVDs on my projector. It was a simple process requiring no third-party software.

Also, is there inexpensive software (say <= $40) that will enable one to edit ripped Blu-ray movies? The Blu-ray version of Hellboy contains only the extended edition and I really, really prefer the theatrical cut. Without the extra scenes the Blu-ray would be perfect. Obviously I would have to play it via my PC from then on, unless there is a way to encode Blu-rays.

Technically Im not a paying customer but I never had luck with vlc or leewo for bluray playback, But with how easy it is for me to use powerdvd I will most likely buy a legit version early next year.

A new beast has entered the chillpad.  A Samsung 28" 4k UHD monitor.  To Samsungs credit they included 2 HDMI cables and a Display cable.  First time in 2 decades a company has privided me with all cables needed for a monitor.  Nice.

Starting to get the room how I want it.  All I need now is a better PC and a Xbox X series to replace the Xbox One.

Thinking about getting this Samsung 4k 32" monitor for my rig.

I currently have this monitor, an MSI 27 inch 1440p with a 144Hz refresh rate.

I'm debating whether or not to sell it to fund part of the purchase of the new monitor or keep it and run a dual monitor setup.

My current specs are

i9-9900k

RTX 2070 8GB

32GB RAM

I plan to get either the 3080 or 3080TI when they come out later this year for better 4k performance.

for gaming, i wouldn't trade 1440k 144hz for 4k 60hz, but after gaming on a 43" monitor its hard to go spend some time playing on the 27"

Agreed. 144Hz 1440P is definitely the "sweet spot" in visuals and performance at the moment. No guarantee that the 30** series are going to be pushing enough power for 144Hz 4K either.

Just noticed your Keyboard Co coaster and Filco Majestouch 2.

IMO the Majestouch is the best keyboard on the market bar none, and Keyboard Co are about 20 minutes from my house (it's also where I got mine)

yes the mx brown is very comfy. i hesitated a bit because of the price, but as there was only 4 azerty left (on the whole internet), i decided to go for it. i don't regret. it's almost impossible to miss a typing. i bought it for work, but i was also happily surprised to see that it's very comfy for gaming too (for the games i play..)

Do your monitors bite you if you get too close to them? 😛

maybe it's not quite obvious, but i work a lot on that desk. and according to specialists, the good distance screen eyes for 24" to avoid tiredness (& disease) is 85-90 cm. which is exactly what i have

yeah i know my desk is bit old, but death to consumerism 😆

*Whistles* Three feet from a 24" display? I currently game at a ~16" viewing distance from a 55" 16:9 display (~110° actual FOV, in-game FOV of ~110° - 130°), unless a game's field of view can't be increased sufficiently, which forces me to use a viewing distance of up to 30".

The reason I commented is that I'm an avid proponent of immersion in games, which is directly related to field of view. If you're not really into immersion, or you don't use those displays for gaming, my information wouldn't be applicable. Carry on, carry on!

being too close from any screen will train your eyes to 'easy meat', and harm your sight over a long term. and yeah i play on that set up (a lot) too. and i'm a how could i say, for me realism is fundamental in gaming. but these 'being close', or large screens things are a bit of a 'placebo effect' to me, not to say a bit consumerist equally (no offense). i mean i play games since the 80s, and i don't give a f.. of playing far away, or on a medium sized screen. but well anyone does what he wants with its controller 😄 (and health 😆)

Hooold on, now! I want to make sure there's no misinformation floating around! 😀

"Too Close": There's no evidence whatever that being too close to a display will harm one's sight. The EM radiation coming from a display is not magically different than other EM radiation. You experience a lot more harmful EM radiation standing outside on a sunny day. I don't wear glasses, and my vision is 20/20.

"Placebo": A large screen and a large FOV are not placebo effects, I assure you! It's a fact that a higher FOV increases immersion. This is why theaters use large screens, why IMAX designed screens that were wider and taller than standard movie screens, and why VR headsets strive for as high an FOV as possible. Once you've played a (preferably) first-person game very close to a very large screen, combined with a suitably high in-game FOV, you will never want to go back to the way you played before.

You can see more of the world around you--you can notice enemies in your peripheral vision that are invisible with a lower FOV. When you walk close to a wall, you "feel" it beside you. When lights pass over your head, they really seem like they're passing over your head because your display extends up to the vertical limit of your vision. When the ceiling is low in a game, you instinctively duck your head, lol.

Here's how in-game FOV works: When you crank up the FOV in a game, what happens? You see more and more of the world, but after a certain point, it becomes too distorted, right? The secret is that the only reason it becomes distorted is that the size of the screen isn't increasing along with the in-game FOV. If you use a really large screen, and don't back away from it but stay just as close, you can increase the in-game FOV much higher without any distortion at all. E.g. at ~16" - 18" from a 55" display, I can use an in-game horizontal FOV of 110° with zero distortion, or 130° (That's right!) with the same amount of distortion PC gamers are used to at ~90° with a traditional screen size & viewing distance.

"Consumerism": Immersion and high-FOV gaming have nothing to do with "consumerism". If consumerism means anything at all, it means buying things just for the sake of buying them, whether they serve any purpose or or not, just to "keep up with the Joneses". Purchasing a larger display in order to increase the enjoyment of games is "awesome-ism". I wouldn't want to go back to playing games at 25 fps, I wouldn't want to go back to playing games at 800 x 600, and I wouldn't want to go back to playing games at low display FOVs (I know because I tried--it felt like looking through a toilet paper tube!)

OLD (Low FOV, "It was good while it lasted")

NEW (High FOV, "I can see for miiiiiles aaaaand miiiiiles...")

did i ever talk of radiations. it's a question of habituation. you train your eye to a situation it'll rarely encounter irl. do you look at your dog when you walk from 10 cm. do you look at other cars when you drive from 10 cm. do you look to an advert in a mall from 10 cm, and so on. instead of training your eye to the hardest situations, you train it for the weakest. thus it'll result in a damage (hear reduction) of your sight over time. and this is why i will personnally never buy these oculus things. IMO we are heading toward a major health disaster with these things. but this another subject

man, if you enjoy playing games on a 2 meters wide screen, good for you. there's nothing wrong with that. like there's nothing wrong playing on a 24" at 80 cm distance 🙂

Exactly. Like I said, I originally posted only as a proponent of immersion. I disagree with you about view distance, as people regularly read books for hours at a time, or do homework or research, all at view distances of ~12" to 18". But as I said, I'm not trying to convince you, just providing what I think is useful information for anyone that might want it.

Distro- going to be HWLabs Nemesis GTX360 at the bottom, GTS360 at the top, with the Lian Li distro plate.

That's going to be a little way down the line mind, as I'm scarcely finding the time to get stuff moved from my C70 chassis let alone getting into loop planning.

Possibly going to throw in a second RTX2080 too now I've got 40 PCIE lanes to play with
