64-bit Pro OEM DVD is currently £59.90 on Amazon UK.

Y'all get the better OS deals I guess. There is an independent seller on Amazon US that has it for $72.00, but any official MS seller has it for $105.00 or higher.

Do people really pay hundreds of dollars for Windows? Retail versions are generally about £75 for a multi-use and ~£50 for an OEM license, or much cheaper if you're happy to use resellers. A full E3 Enterprise subscription is ~$84 per seat anually, and that includes a lot more than just the OS.

This is good news if true. I can't see myself replacing my 2014 4770K build for another two years, so I've never researched prices on Windows 10. I get a Newegg mailing daily, and was going from the sales I've noticed.

I first noticed 10 Pro 64 bit OEM at $139.99 on sale for $125.99 + $2.99 S/H on 9-25-17. It's currently $149.99, with the lowest sale price being $119.99 Free S/H on 11-23-18. The key code prices are the same.

I noticed 10 Pro Full 32 & 64 bit (USB Flash Drive) at $199.99, on sale at $179.99 Free S/H on 6-30-19, and again on 7-30-19.

Edit: At least on Newegg, I've never seen a version higher than Pro.

$16. Theres a few tech youtubers aropund with discount codes, that should bring it down to like 12-13 bucks.

Theres also ways to still upgrade for free from 7 to 10, but it involves some f*ckery

WHAT!?

This is a little odd. Main monitor is 3440x1440. I have a small 10inch screen on the left that's 1920x1080. It's mainly just there so I can reference the interwebs for info while I game. (I have limited desk space). This being my main PC it's not quite as organized as I'd like (program menu is full of sh*t).

MwYrl3w.png

This is what that translates into, complete with party lights. If I shifted the camera over you'd see my wife's setup. Sorry for the sh*tty pic. I had to let the daylight in for the details to even show up.

How does that work? I have Windows 7, and whenever I have a second display hooked up and run a game in full-screen, the second monitor is disabled. Do you just game in windowed mode or is there another way to do it?

I just set my desktop to extend. Generally my games always default to my main display and leave my desktop visible on my second screen. I have had an issue mainly with GZDoom where it will want to default to display 2 and I'll end up being forced to disable it (go into settings and set my display options to only output to display 1) to get the game to launch correctly, but other than that I've never had an issue with it. The only thing I could suggest is digging into your driver software and seeing if you can setup a profile for your games executable that forces it to use a specific display. Or check the settings menus within the game itself. That said I don't recall this being an issue in Windows 7, it should be possible for you. The only other thing that springs to mind is an issue with cabling. It's not unheard of for a display on HDMI or DP to reset its connection while changing resolution and then sh*t itself. (looses the "handshake" signal that allows video output). Generally you'll hear Windows make a notification sound signifying that something has been disconnected if this is happening though.

Nvidia control panel might let you do two different resolutions on an extended display, but I don't think W7 control panel does natively.

I've never gone out of my way to look into the issue, but that's what I'm referring to: If I launch a game in fullscreen mode, the other display blanks out, so I can't use the desktop.

Windows 7 allows one to extend the desktop among displays of different resolutions. Right now I have a 3840x2160 OLED, and an old 1600x1000 LCD that I was using to play some older HOGs (Shut it!).

As an aside, using this 20" HP 2009m after not having used an LCD for a while, it amazed me how miserable is the off-axis brightness and color, even on a small display like this. I haven't used a newer LCD, whether TN/IPS/etc., so I have no idea whether it's possible to view a really big LCD, such as NVIDIA's, from 18" without excessive nonuniformity.

Yeah sorry I don't have any further insight here. Prior to this setup I was using two Dell displays in Windows 7. One at 1920x1200 and the other at 1600x1200. No issues to speak of there either. Desktop was set to extend and I used to run Discord on one and GTA V on the other. Both were digital outs. One DVI-D and the other Display Port. Like I said before I'd guess you might need some optimization in drivers or to look into how your cabling applies to your setup.

But as I suggested, you're sure that you don't typically run games in windowed (or borderless windowed) mode? That would explain it.

My uncle hit me up asking if I wanted his daughters old rig otherwise he'd just scrap it so I thought hey, a free rigs a free rig. I knew it wasn't going to be top tier performance by any stretch of the imagination but how bad could it be. Sorry the pictures aren't super great, was doing a live unboxing/teardown on Discord.

Here's the guts of this BEASTLY machine

IZA3AP6.jpg

8gb (samsung 1600mhz) of blazing fast DDR3

0VpsSTg.jpg

2080TI? Ray Tracing? CUDA cores? Nah mate we rocking with a 2gb GT710!

iWZj7Y6.jpg

CPIeqTS.jpg

Generic MSI H61 mobo, but whats under that paste 🤔

DvCmBS8.jpg

Why, it's an i5 3340!

S0RqRFh.jpg

Bonus round:

koaguqw.jpg

So yeah we got an i5 3340 on a generic MSI H61 board paired with 8gb of 1600mhz ddr3, a 2gb GT710, 500GB WD blue for storage alongside a disc drive I unironically actually needed, entombed in a generic cheap eBay  case and powered by an equally as generic PSU. As I said not the greatest by todays standards (or even in it's heyday) but lets face it it's a fully functional decent specced 3rd gen i5 rig that'll probably end up running some lightweight linux distro and serving as a media box for my TV.

I dont know you Intel guys do anything less than ddr4 3200mhz, but then again ram isnt as important on intel platforms as it is for Ryzen.

I'm gonna guess its a membrane keeb too? Kinda like the keycaps though ngl

I feel like if you've never experienced higher speed RAM it probbly isn't as important to you, but once you actually use it you wont be able to go back - same with SSD's.

Yeah it's a membrane but it actually feels kinda nice, definitely a bit squishy but it's a good feeling typing on it and the keycaps appeal to me.

My understanding, traditionally, was that RAM speed had no significant effect on gaming framerates. I looked into this several years ago, the last time probably being when I was putting together my current system in Feb 2014.

But just a few weeks ago I read an article in which testing--I believe it was AC: Origins or Odyssey--showed a significant framerate difference between RAM speeds. Significant as in maybe 5% higher framerate, as opposed to 0.1%.

I'll try to find that article, but it sounds like for whatever reason, perhaps RAM speed does modestly impact framerate today, whereas I'm certain that until recently it had no measurable impact.

Yeah I presume the progressions in tech/architecture from 2014 until now have made great strides; from what I recall Ryzen's Infinity Fabric tech is kind of similar to FSB except the Infinity Fabric is directly linked to RAM speed, along with newer games and their framework utilizing RAM more. I have 24GB of bog standard Kingston DDR3 server RAM and it's always served me well but I wonder if I'd notice a discernible difference with higher clocked memory.

i have 16gb of 2400mhz and 3600mhz and it's something like 3-4 fps in 1440p.  in 4K there is no difference.

but 1600mhz of ddr3 you probably see some difference, but upgrading RAM+Mobo+CPU is not worth it

I've looked into shifting from 1366 to Ryzen as the performance of say a 2600x is somewhat better than my dual Xeons, but with half the core count, lower power draw, lower temps plus better single threaded performance, but then at the same time is it really worth it money wise to move to a newer platform with comparable performance when I don't really need it and the fact I pretty much underutilize the sh*t out of my current rig considering all I really play is Vice City, Minecraft and do some light Photoshop/Video editing work.

Would be nice to not have the awful green mobo PCB though.

A few of my buddies get new Windows keys damn near every semester for college. If I ever need one, they've got plenty. I'm in the same boat as you, though, I've used the Windows I got way back when and will probably do so for a while. Then again, the things I've seen Proton do for me lately I might not even grab Windows on the next rig.

You didn't ask for my approval, but I'm giving it to you anyway!

Once you go to a larger display (as long as it's accompanied by a higher resolution), you don't want to go backward. Now that you have a higher display FOV, you'll want to increase the in-game FOV if necessary in games that don't annoyingly lock it down.

thnx, its one of the new monitors that was at CES 2019,  XG438 43" 4K 120hz, only VA panel and only come with Freesync2 but so far im loving it. most of the times im just pushing the chair to the side, picking one of the xbox controllers and sitting on the couch behind. FOV still isnt a problem but i guess im still on the honeymoon stage lmao
