In going back to all the pages of this thread, I still had hoped we'd come up with a long list of worthy bands to document the stages of Heavy Metal, the SUPREME Book of HEAVY METAL playlist. Most posts centered on a few bands, who really didn't do groundbreaking work, as well as several posts on tours at the time they were posted. Not to say that's bad, but this thread DOES need the variety it should encompass. And people going off on someone else's taste is pretty freakin' closed minded if you ask me.

The thing I love about metal is all the various styles and bands. Let's add some that haven't been mentioned in here already. I challenge you guys!!

BTW, Wild Rags Records has a few alone!!

I'm SPEAKING OF METAL, B4 your Time, honey!!!

I will assemble a playlist of vintage Root of all Evil shows, of which Earl Root documented for every broadcast. I also came across some music mailer catalogs, in the days prior to Internet, you had to mail away via catalogs, darling!

Def Leppard were rocking the earlier part of their career. WAISTED written by Steamin' Steve Clark made Earl's show one night, as did Van Halen's Dirty Movies that same show! Partly inspired by request, but Earl played Thin Lizzy as well as Budgie. He also played Pink Floyd bootlegs and Doors bootlegs. He covered thousands of hours and many types of bands. Anything you wouldn't hear on commercial rotation FM.

As I said, Wild Rags is one label to look at.

Someone brought up Macabre a few times, they were a ROAE favorite for many years.

BTW, ToyMachine, by making the 'foolish' comment, I mean in this thread, Def Leppard were not good enough because they had large/mullet hair styles? Their musical output certainly can't be reason they were no good by SOME people's standards. That's how you claim your legend in rock music, by style over substance, and even then, you can't win I guess.

No matter, I'm not the only one who helped DL climb the success ladder, they did get to a very prominent position.

To me, Hard rock and Metal sleep in the same bed. They are kin. They share much the same musical attitude and elements, and I can't imagine not enjoying both

New Alice in Chains song "A Looking in View" was released today. It's pretty f*cking rad if I do say so myself.

Just mentioned them opening for Clash of the Titans circa 1990

I would advise two more bands from Earl's show. Not all the acts being aired are from local music circles. See if you can find MX Machine and Doctor (DR.) Know!!

So I guess Down are coming here in September. I could really give less of a sh*t about them but I'm more interested at the opening bands being Weedeater and Melvins. I think I might go just for that seeing as I had to miss the Melvins show in May last minute. That sucked. confused.gif

Anyone who likes Thrash metal need to get Heathen - Victims of Deception. One of the greatest thrash albums next to metallicas Master of puppets and slayers reign in blood. Its a very undderated album

To quote an FM caller, "I needs some Heathen to keep my ears Bleedin'"

I saw them live, in fact!

I will have some more bands to list, I've been prepping some radio for YouTube, finding some long buried audio tapes, and dusting them off. YouTube is not the best thing for music only presentation, but it gets the most people, which is why most people use it, if not everybody! <G> biggrin.gif

I've not been an avid Cannibal fan, but you should see my hat! It's worn the most of all my concert hats!

I got Eaten Back to Life on cassette, that and Deicide's first albums are MUST OWNS.

To add something new, I found this in my closet of stuff, took a photo, slightly modified the lighting and it looks a bit devilish now!

Here's my own take on the CLASSIC DISTURBED logo, it wasn't used professionally but sure as HELL looks the part! I did put it in my car windows as I guess I intended it as a bumpersticker like banner'

The ORIGINAL Disturbed is true classic metal, btw. Fans of the Chicago band, that is NOT metal as it was known in the day.

Disturbed (Chicago) is more of a Hard Rock band. They're a good band though in my opinion.

The lead singer of the Chicago Disturbed, David Draiman chose the name Disturbed for his own reasons, yet he obviously was unaware of the local GROUNDSWELL of metal that proceeded that band. They'd done fine to keep their former name, as our Minneapolis band went from being called Deranged to Disturbed in 1987. I am not sure how long they had been Deranged, it was formed in the 1980s, and certainly the mid-1980s at least.

I have in my possession as well, a cassette of the band being interviewed on Earl Root's radio show, at the time, hosted by Vince Wallender, AKA Vincebus Eruptus. He was one of the second coolest guys I've ever known in my life, both Earl Root and Bill Lindsey are fantastic people, to anyone who met them, they've been welcoming and gracious. I was very intimidated meeting these guys in known bands, where I was just a casual or rabid fan.

Either way, This happened before for a number of musical acts, and I plan to feature one of them again... the Metal Band Animosity, NOT from California but again, the Midwest locale.

The Midwest had a scene that fluctuated and thrived in the shadow of Prince, who is most noted from MN.

Prince is good, but he's not METAL.

The band Impaler originated in 1983, as an example. Compare to Metallica in 1981-2

Well thanks for clearing that up because you know I'm sure we all had a major problem realising this astounding fact.

OK, well, good to know you're aware. It is not a very serious comment, but when me and anyone around here speak of metal. We say it like we say SLAYER!

IT's enforced with a semi-shout/yell

Metal music has been around some time, and if you were weened on the early stuff, you know it's not something you can forsake. Some bands do, but I still think as people they have immense respect for the origins.

The band Animosity had to change their name to Animosity Inc. to avoid confusion.

There are a few bands, like Powermad that got signed to Warners (like the current Disturbed, I might add), but the major labels really don't know how to handle or promote bands so you see people using MySpace and other online outlets they didn't have before.

It's certainly refined the methods of artist and fans can relate on.

I recall the magazines with all their addresses listed, and along with record labels, management and the artists' addresses, people would request penpals of their favorite bands. Snail Mailing the World over, in fact!

I drew that logo myself using the band's rough format and refining all the elements. I was a bit surprised to dig it up.

As for Animosity Inc... The song I'll be posting on YouTube is one I'd been playing over and over on a cassette for awhile and I realize how good it still is!! It's based off the TRUE story of the Tylenol pill murders.

This was circa 1983. They never caught the original culprit!! Still at large.

He laced the product with cyanide.

Having trouble finding the tape at present, but it can't be far. Got this old pic I found again, I'm wearing the Disturbed T-shirt that Doesn't Glow in the Dark as some of them did. I had the Metallica one that glowed in the dark, It wore out and got thrown away, as most of my vintage shirts did... I think my mom's to blame for that!

One of the things that bothered me about looking Disturbed up on Wiki is that someone would edit out any mention of our band, at least when I was giving some info, There has to be a footnote on the original act, as I see it, there's clearly more history for the NuMetal outfit, but my mission in Earl's passing is to see that any thing I archived of his time alive is around for generations, I feel if it's just for my own benefit now, it's just NOT enough. I so enjoyed what he did for metal and people, it feels good to get the word out.

I don't know the other guys from Chicago but I know Earl pretty darn well, and he was a great, great man. I can't put into words what it was like to know him, but I tell you if you got to chat with him and you were a real music lover, he'd probably commit you name to memory, as he did with me. Other stations and DJs, band members, if you had a great set of boobs, maybe!??? Earl was not like that. He really was one of a kind, just as Frank Zappa was, one of his idols.

I put up most of the photos I found, this one from a promo I'd dug up from 1987. I really wanted to present images from this band as well, but couldn't find the means to do that at Wiki. since you can label pictures, I don't see a real issue with any confusion either.

Just make a separate entry titled Disturbed (MN) or something, differentiating the two bands.

I had a foot note for the early history because of their early timeline in the 1990s, whereas MN Disturbed is mid 1980s to 92/3. The band is now known as GodAwful and they will continue with their music, found on MySpace for some time now, but under "BigMetalDorks". Never ones to take things too seriously, however, this shot I took of Earl adding bands to an evenings playlist. All FM broadcasts at the station required records of what was played and for a time they were sent out to members of the station (all Public Broadcasting, although not the major PB outlet. When Vice City made fun of the money raising efforts of Public Radio in the States, I told Earl he should SoundBite the game audio for intersparsed comic relief between songs. I would need to supply him with it however, and it never was finalized for his show which changed form over the 20 years, in the later 2000+, more of the older format was scrapped and it became two to three main sections of music types from beginning to end.

Update!

Heard Hard Rock station here, 93X tonight play a concert from California of Chicago Disturbed, and Moonshield, that's a good idea. I mean, for one, there's a local station, they play Disturbed, recount the band's history yet know nothing about Earl's band and the history of local metal here. These guys are TRUE Johnnie cum Latelys!

It really pisses me off how history so rich is cast aside like it never happened. Sure, the new NuMetal version is more "friendly" for wider audiences, sure it's more appealing, so the masses except it, but that's not true metal in the underground.

I like bands that are polished and unpolished, they can be metal or caberet. However, I just can't confuse these two bands musically if you tried.

Earl Root didn't dedicate ALL his efforts to the band, and because of that, the band didn't tour the World or anything, he was pretty rooted in the home town...but think about that... Even Carnivore and Pete Steele stayed in NYC because Pete held down a job working for the City and he wasn't inclined to leave. He's had amazing success with Type O, while still facing many personal issues along the way. Another band, however, we played from day one on KFAI radio.

UPDATE, I reversed changes to Wiki that just added footnotes, but that is a chore, For Earl and his band to retain credit I am seriously thinking we need a page just for him. An online search DID turn up a professional St. Paul paper article on Earl's personal story, and I found it very informative, and it would be the best reference for a source to WikiPedia as needed to clarify something, however, the band Disturbed, when ever I collected magazines with mention of their live playing days, I handed those off to Earl, himself. I had intended he copy and return them, but he never remembered!!

Sadly, I wish I had backed them up!

I just capped more audio from 1989 vintage cassette recordings, perhaps earlier, of Earl's show, one in particular that will be featured on YT shortly. It's really great to share what made the show so fun with the rest of the World. Some people might need a repeat listen to get the vibe of it, it's not TRYING to be funny, or maybe it is, Just the people calling in and lively banter over the years made it REALLY something.

A friend turned me on to the station and the show, I had no idea really, even as a result, taping it for enjoyment anytime, I never came to appreciate the archiving nature of it until years later. Just to know when something is going to be good enough to save for years, in the moment... You just never really know.

  • 2 weeks later...

Are their any actually good heavy metal/NWOBHM/Glam Metal/Glam Rock/rock bands out there other than the same old ones? I want some new rock and roll to listen to, and NOT the commercial over produced trendy crap. I quite like Hardcore Superstar and Crash diet a bit, not a huge fan but their cool. Any recommendation would be appreciated

Anyway, here's an album my Step-dad has been looking for ages for, Finally found the album for him yesterday:

I'll finally get to see the mighty Opeth on October 13th in Dublin, Ireland. f*ckin stoked as I missed out on them last time they were here with support from Cynic and The Ocean because of college exams. I'm hoping the support this time will be just as good. Rumour has it Dream Theatre will be playing.

Also, The Ocean are playing in a small pub near my college house in November. It should be a sweet little gig.

Damien, keep looking, man, of course there are tons of bands with little notoriety, One thing I love about 20 years of the Root, so much to partake in, even archived it's been constantly going in my machine as of late, metal, metal, metal. Nice to see a Washburn HM series axe in that video of English Dogs

Speaking of VINTAGE Chicago based metal, as I mentioned, when a East Coast band tours the "Tri-State area", they've gone some distance North, South, EAst and West. Here's the live clip of Chicago based Tyrant's Reign, this live gig is posted from a July 1988 appearence. Where ARE THEY now, eh?

This is the kind of scene music that really made things locally so exciting. Didn't have to lament a non local major recording artist lacking, there were so many bands starting up!

Earl Root's show was amazing, but the radio station allowing community to come in and put on their own show was far from big in nature and stature. One of the benefits

was that the FCC didn't overtly notice all the profanity infractions but the board of directors were always up in arms over it. There were frequent issued disclaimers during

a broadcast "The Following program contains Realistic Language" Listeners are advised to tune to another channel, but still, who would listen, right? I dunno

Anyway, Earl's main thing was to allow at least 30 minutes to local acts, from all over, in fact, touring, performing or recording, but most unsigned. You guys will tune

to someone like Carson Daily to see LA acts he "deems" worthy, however, unlike America's Got Talant, The Root of all Evil gave a spotlight to anyone putting some hard

work into a musical project and wanting to publicize their gigs and their recording releases.

One such band, of many I plan to host online, is Tyrant's Reign. Friends of Realm as Earl stated on his show. I had forgotten about them until hearing them again induced major volume output on the radio and headbanging action. Those guys were METAL! No doubt

Not to me it ain't .... Adult Swim put up money for the show, so DeathKlok seems a natural billing in light of that.

Oh, I found another Earl Root pic I neglected to upload, and I use it for my desktop pic!

Here's another live one that is already up, Classic 80s live metal show. The one I will upload was DISTURBED opening for Pantera, as you guys seem to forget the era I'm talking about is the Golden Age of metal!

I just am really enjoying my archive, which would not have been as preserved, had I practiced my old ways of recording over all my initial blank tapes to save money, or just being prone to one way of thinking (not giving unheard bands a needed shot, which is perhaps still true to an extent. All the bands were UnHeard at one time)
