Next week, I found out yesterday, Tim H and Co. will celebrate the life and show of Mr. Earl J. Root on the STILL longest running metal show in the WORLD!!

The Root Of All Evil

I called and said I will show up and hope to bring some clips to air from the dusty, musty past... 1980s. I was invited down to the show by Mr. Root, broadcast for over 20 years in Mpls/St. Paul. Though commercial free radio, and not a powerful signal, this show has been an institution considering all that has been aired and gone on within the tiny studio. Earl passed away from cancer and we plan to celebrate the second year of his passing in honor of his spirit. Beyond just supporting Heavy Metal in just about all capacities, as I said before, if you met him, you were typically in awe and accepted no matter who you were. Earl was a great man, and it feels good to honor him, not just his show but the very personality that he EMBEDDED into it.

For those who missed earlier comments, Earl Root formed Disturbed and Root of All Evil Records, an ACTUAL brick and morter store in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.

He had kept that going online for over 10 years now.

As everything has gone tech since it started mid 1980s, the shows can be streamed online and listened to anywhere, no excuses, y'all

You should check it out before commenting, know that they don't compromise. No Slipknot played on this show!

There are a couple Kublai Khan tracks on YouTube, as I mentioned above, I tend to like them more then local legends Powermad

I used to listen to SID Metal.Which is a combination of the SID analog synth chip and guitar. This particular genre was introduced by Machinae Supremacy:

I know the guys voice sucks but the instrumental is great.Especially the intro.

paganfest II just played in St. Paul, a long time favorite club, formerlly Ryans, where I've seen a good number of bands!

Gojira and Earth Crisis playing this Month, Mastodon played the freakin Fine Line, known as a jazz club initially. Not the normal booking

Got Godsmack coming soon. Those guys seem old, almost

One of the show announcements last night was a major MetalFest in the MidWest, requiring a road trip... One of the DJ co-hosts is embarking on and will report from. I didn't catch the location but the list of acts was astounding. Anyone with more details, put them in! Sounds like it trumps some of Jack Koshack's MetalFest... and would appeal to all self-respecting metal heads

I only have funds for bills, so I didn't attend, the Xbox I got was via a sale of a musical speaker set, I sold some ADA cabs. Still, I am not going to miss out on the upcoming UFO gig in the fall here.

Just wish I could go to the other major fest out of State I mentioned. I'll try and dig up info.

More local legends. Got signed to Warner Bros, just like Prince

Terminator by POWERMAD...rare promo vid., not as polished as the album track

Lead singer is Joel Dubay

Is it even possible to be more evil than Black One?

Jesus christ the new Sunn is f*cking evil.

Yeah, great album. Like with most Sunn albums, it takes a while to sink in, but I absolutely love it now. Alice is one of the best tracks they've ever done IMO.

Trows, did you end up making the album cover for Be'lakor? I think I remember you mentioning you were doing it. If you did...holy sh*t, great job. Can't wait for the album.

Nope, the artist who did the first one ended up doing it.

20th of June album launch biggrin.gif. And with Arbrynth supporting.

My two favourite local bands playing the same gig. biggrin.gif

Might head to one of the interstate shows too, been too long since i've seen Be'lakor. They've pretty much stopped turning up at local gigs.

No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

I don't know, this one hit me straight away unlike their earlier stuff, it feels a lot less dense. It's a really solid release. Alice is definitely a favourite, reminds me of a droney Kayo Dot, particularly the with the brass at the end of it.

Isn't there a 'noise' art band called SUNN-O?

I recall an article and hearing some of their work, it's love or hate probably, very avante garde

I wanted to reflect back on W.A.S.P.

I'd just enjoyed some classic material from them! ROCK!!!

Getting closer to the Earl Root commemorative broadcast... I've been looking for some more highlights, some really funny gorecheck stuff.

Going up on YouTube as well.

Earl did a few interviews for, I believe, Sheetmetal magazine. One interview over the phone he aired was with Bobby Blitz of OVERKILL fame, I found that segment, it's awesome but cut off before the end, so it likely won't go on radio but I WILL post it to YouTube.

He also talked with Paul Bostaphe before he took over Lombardo's drumming chair in SLAYER. The days of FORBIDDEN metal! ARGH!

Yeah, that's who we were talking about. Their name's pronounced like Sun, but their name includes to logo of the old Sunn amps - it's just not commonly included in their name (or I guess it's mispronounced like that). But yeah, it's very love/hate. If you're alright with really slow, droning, ambient music, you'd probably dig their stuff. This latest album is pretty ambitious, and I think they pull it together pretty well. They pretty much put Southern Lord Records on the map.

I adopted to calling them Sunn-O, it comes off more original, and has a quirky feel to it

Well, you would.

As for Be'lakor. I've never heard of them but they have the same name as my last name. tounge.gif

Metal rejoice! Hail, Earl Root!

The show this past weekend was like a family reunion, a studio of guests paid homage to Earl Root on the second year since his passing... We couldn't possibly cover all the best of his twenty plus years, but Jimzilla brought in a special cake commemorating the event. Earl's "semi-naked co-pilot; Tim Honebrink hosted much of the show, and brought with him very rare Disturbed music no one has heard!

Bill Lindsey of Impaler stopped in, as well as Willy the Lizard... a unique character unto himself, who also has archived much of those 20 odd years of

ROOT OF ALL EVIL!

Look for a streaming archive available soon on their website...

KFAI.ORG

Visit MySpace.com/bigmetaldorks for band news, as they continue to forge ahead with GodAwful....

The Awful Truth!

I'll have in-studio video on YouTube, as well as more live Disturbed, first part up now! (MetallicBill)

During the 2AM hour, a special emissary from our group of METAL KFAI friends (Vern of The Pit of Vermin) went on a road trip to report back on the show, the Festival that is knockin 'em dead out of State. The one I meant to comment about earlier, but lost the info...

Maryland DeathFest I believe it was. I would have gladly gone to it!!

Eh, I haven't bothered with Killswitch since their self-titled, but this isn't terrible. Kind of repetitive, and then then song kind of just...ends. I hope that's not the final cut of the song. And the production is way too "pro tools" for me. Meatheads sporting Affliction tees should go gorillas over it though.

Saw Kylesa last night open for a certain band that probably won't get the best reception in here, but oh man. I really need to see them headline. It sucks they didn't play as long as when I saw them open for Mastodon but it was still a f*cking killer set. Too bad I was one of the few going apesh*t over them.

Setlist (from what I can remember):

Where the Horizon Unfolds

Perception

Unknown Awareness

Only One

Said and Done

Hollow Server

Might of been another song in there that I can't remember but holy crap. It was great.

Clutch is coming to my town August 8th with Baroness in tow. Should be quite the jamboree.

@KSE, I swear, Howard Jones gets his lyrics out of hallmark cards.

Found this on wikipedia:

7 other tracks were also released online to the now defunct www.myspace.com/strangecousinsfromthewest webpage. These tracks were pulled from the web very shortly after release and are very hard to come by at this time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Cousins_From_The_West

Did anybody manage to catch the tracks while they were up? I honestly don't know what I'd do if the album leaks. If it's only a few tracks off the album then I wouldn't listen since it'd kind of ruin the 'first listen experience', but if it was a full leak, I'd have to think about it still.

However, I'm buying the album no matter what.

It's leaked. Missing the last track though.

Just put the new Heaven & Hell (Dio Sabbath) album playing.

I gotta say it's unbelievable how Dio can still sing like that... He's f*cking 66 FFS!

Don Henley's B day is coming up, he's turning 62, and he can still sing. Thing is, not everyone's so lucky.

Getting back to metal, however, MAYHEM is coming up June 9th here. I have to buy license tabs for my car, which means, no money to get tix. Good metal all around on tour however! Get out and see some live moshing!
