Funny, because Enslaved just cancelled their show here in Milwaukee.

House of Blues...here I come.

I think thats the reason for them canceling their US. tour. This is far greater too. I bet Enslaved will get an hour too if they're the only opening band. Either that or Opeth will get like 3 hours which is awesome too.

Master of Pain.

What you guys think about Black metal? Best band?

I think that BORGIR seems to be the actual best black metal band.

Black metal is dead, and Dimmu Borgir is a complete bastardization of what black metal was about. They're capitalizing on using a cliche "grim black metal" aesthetic to draw in idiot fans to buy their sh*t at hot topic. I hate them more than I hate those USBM f*cks like Wrest or Malefic from Leviathan and Xasthur respectively. Sure they can put out some decent stuff, but they're grim for the sake of being grim and put out 8000 demos a year. The last decent "black metal" band I've listened to was either Nachtmystium or Wolves in the Throne Room, or maybe Weakling (but they're split-up). But even then, Nachtmystium's progressed from the typical black metal sound, and Wolves have kind of sold out on their belief structure ever since Pitchfork started fellating them after Two Hunters (but are still good regardless). And Enslaved f*cking rules. Hail Satan.

The only band i listen to under the name "black metal" would be windir, but their music is a mix between black metal and folk metal.

Personally, my favorite is SODOM or BATHORY, Bathory gets credit from many, in fact, if you take YouTube comments as influence.

Ever hear of the band BULLDOZER?

Love their name still!!

Just got back from seeing Meshuggah and f*cking CYNIC on Tuesday. Man that was a sick show. The Faceless were cool for like 5 minutes and then the singer came out. Cynic blew away Meshuggah. When they left the stage the crowd was chanting for them. Meshuggah was great but I think I needed to be a little bit more familiar with their stuff as there were a couple songs I didn't recognize.

After the show I met Paul and Sean from and they talked to me about the headling tour they're planning for post summer. Sean was also one of the many people to comment on my Atheist shirt too, and Paul said they would like to do something with Atheist. Heres hoping for that.

Master of Pain.

Arh, Dimmu Borgir, probably the Black Metal community... most universally hated band. There's simply no room for debate on the issue, they are commercial whores and make horrible music. Well this album goes to prove that is not the case, and they are able to craft some excellent symphonic melodic black metal.

However, immortal, emperor, mayhem, darkthrone, n gorgoroth r also "decent black metal bands"!!!

'bout Dimmu, the latest album "In sorte diaboli" is NOT black metal...Dimmu has said in recent interviews that they themselves do not consider this album to be black metal...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, whether you like the album or not, has been considered Dimmu’s breakthrough album and one of the most highly regarded melodic black metal albums for many reasons. With Enthrone Darkness Triumphant Dimmu Borgir have cemented themselves among Melodic Black Metal elites! The guitars are as clear as glass and pack quite a punch.

f*ck you Scarface.

I was supposed to go to that show when it comes to Milwaukee, but I can't because I have to work. And it falls on Valentine's Day, although that wouldn't have mattered so much anyway. I'd rather hear Cynic play 'Focus' nine times over than really see Meshuggah. They're like, the prize in the cereal box of the show.

symphonic melodic black metal

Give me a break, seriously. Them, along with their f*ckhead little brother band Old Man's Child, are f*cking jokes. Same with their Swedish equivalent Dark Funeral. Bands like this are caricatures of a violent movement in the 90s that died out about around when Emperor released IX Equilibrium. "Symphonic melodic black metal" always seemed like an oxymoron to me, especially once production quality went up and the actual emotion of the music diminished. Death metal should be well-produced, black metal shouldn't need to be. That isn't the goal of black metal.

That would be Cradle of Filth.

Thats pretty much what the crowd thought. Infact I saw a few people leave after Cynic left the stage.

Cradle of Filth is the most Dis-respected "black metal" band. People seem to like Dimmu Borgir, and they have their popularity...to me it seems.

Funny how Commercially successful either means you are bad or a sell out! hahaha

I wouldn't like to meet Gaahl of Gorggoroth [sp?]because he's genuinely scary, however, I'll meet King Diamond any day of the week!

Seeing the black metal expose on Vh1 (IIRC), now YouTube.

The book Lords of Chaos doesn't cover them for some reason, not sure why, but Dimmu are VERY much discussed. The book interviews those in the Black Circle of Norway metal, and they often have a message taking precedant over the music.

Bands like Absurd and Abruptum, Korrozia, and Graveland.... Not really known here in the USA.

I will ask, what do you think about the addition of Fascism and racism in Black Metal?

Both Varg and Fenriz of Dark Throne appear to embrace these.

Dimmu Borgir are fine.

I've said multiple times that Shagrath is bringing the band way down with his atrocious, over produced for no f*cking reason vocals.

If Vortex was to take over vocal duties, I would be a fan. Not because they make particularly interesting music, but it can be fun. The potential is there, anyway. Vortex's short vocal segment in The Sacrilegious Scorn is f*cking badarse, but apart from that it's just not worth listening to.

No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

I've not seen to many metal musicians who don't seem like genuine musicians because of their demeanor, and he happens to be one.

I also don't support violence in any way shape or form. Moshing in the pit can be voilent but it's not often intended to harm, it's good natured, from what I've seen... Many sports are intended to be the same but there's often real unsettling mix that breaks over the line.... by fights breaking out over things that should be kept in check.

Anyway, The band School Of Voilence said in an interview that they formed because of their message and the music was a vehicle for it, despite that, I like them. Even Jason Newsted was seen sporting their shirt.

In the news, a new album of comedic metal from legends of the UK scene; SPINAL TAP!!!!

All HAIL!!

Hahaha.. try imagining Gaahl's impatience with Slamman...

As for black metal.. one word: EMPEROR.

Great you reminded me how pissed I am that I missed them both times they reunited.

EDIT - Speaking of bands I've missed, I'm working on seeing Carcass in March. I missed them last year when they came here and I'm going to make damn sure I don't miss out again. Suffocation is touring with them as well as a bunch of other bands but I couldn't care less about the rest. I just want to see Carcass.

Hey man, don't forget Vortex does clean vocal. Since when does black metal focus on clean vocals? Shagrath's voice is quite good...I'm not talking 'bout In Sorte Diaboli here, only 'bout Enthrone Darkness Triumphant...On this album, As opposed to the average sounding croaks featured on later releases, Shagrath is howling like a spawn of Lucifer... Lire la suite would. His demonic screaming is still unsettling to me at times and is a highlight of the album. The song is very strong and provides an accurate representation of the material at hand. The last minute and a half of “Mourning Palace” is simply breathtaking. The melodic tremolo picked guitars are backed by fast double bass and a majestic and intricate synth part. The song ends with the same melodic riff, but this time is joined by Shagrath and the now blasting drums. And sure I don't want to listen to the latest Dimmu album, In Sorte Diaboli, because that's an album bringing the band way down...

Maybe not always but theres been enough clean vocals in black metal. Look at Inno A Satana by Emperor. Thats a perfect example of a black metal song with some nice atmospheric clean vocals.

And on the more raw side of black metal, don't forget De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas's title track (which I think is Mayhem's best album)

Yeah, I guess its listenable as far as raw black metal goes. It's the only Mayhem album I own anyway.
