Haha 69 pages.

I have a feeling Rockstar had something to do with this topic.

Sorry.

So how bout that Paradise Lost Album?

Symphony X is brutal, Lyrics are a bit of a down fall and require an aquired taste, like lamb of god, but ya...

edit: awwwww i messed it up, now its 70

Symphony X are about as far away from "brutal" as you can get.

Im talking about the guitar, bieng a guitarist myself, not the lyrics/feel.

I mean, Michael romeo, he may be fat, but his sausage fingers can move. lol

Check it:

That doesn't make them brutal at all...

It would need much more groove.

Speaking of brutal though, first The Ocularis Infernum gig in over a year next month, can't bloody wait.

No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

I read that wrong first...thought you meant that in a month it would be a year away from their gig... suicidal.gif

Opinions sir, not facts are being stated. I'm very sure that other people will agree with me that a very amazing guitarist, and keyboardist can make a band brutal. I'm also very sure that people will agree with you that a good guitarist won't make a band brutal. To all his own opinion. All i did was state mine

I think VERY MUCH that symphony x is "brutal", then again same goes with cannibal corpse, but they aren't my style

If Symphony X is brutal, where does the line of brutality stop? If Symphony X is brutal, then any band MORE brutal than them (a lot) are brutal. By that time, brutal becomes an ineffective way to describe a certain band, since it can be construed to say you are speaking of metal as a whole.

We have "brutal death metal" for a reason, but to be (brutally) honest I'd rather the word be omitted from metal altogether so kids wouldn't run around saying "O MAN THIS IS SO BRUTAL."

Brutal brutal brutal brutal brutal. By time you read this post the word brutal will have no meaning and you might smarten up and not use it to describe MUSIC for f*cksake.

I blame Metalocalypse.

Anyway, 'Brutality' of music isn't an opinion thing, it has to do with the sound created.

Brutal is more of a "DUN DUN DUNDEDUNDUN DUN DUN DUNDUNDUN DUN BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" while Symphony X is more "deedledeedeeldedeel AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Also new Iced Earth leaked holy f*ck.

No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

So has Jon Schaeffer come up with any new riffs, or is he just recycling the same ones from Burnt Offerings?

I can't stop listening to Evoken. I have all their latest 4 albums, but Quietus is probably my favorite. I really like "Where Ghosts Fall Silent". Funeral doom is badass music.

How about a quick mention of SOD and Nuclear Assault's Mr. Dan Lilker!??!

He's a bit of an institution in Heavy music...also in Monastat-7 or I was thinking, involved with them at some point.... correct me in that regard.

He's never been content with one project!

Funeral doom

I always lol when I hear/read that. It just sounds ridiculous*...that being said, I have never to my knowledge listened to anything that is funeral doom, at some point I will, but I will continue to lol anyway

*I do appreciate that there are many ridiculous sub-genres and the like, it just is funny to me. Feck, the guy in my sig, on commenting on what genre it may fit into (while also saying it's very hard to put it into one box) called it Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal

I guess its understandable...somehow. But it's a fantastic genre, I suggest you read up on it and do give it a go. And haha, yeah, Jari has some funny views on his own band, but in the long run he's right. I'll still know Wintersun as just melodic death tounge.gif.

I've heard a handful of Candlemass songs I think, Nixon sent me one song one day, I was shocked by it (epic doom it seems, but doom none the less, so I shall be checking out the far reaches of doom metal some day soon

Candlemass is olde skool metal and you need to get to know them if you respect metal roots!

Earl Root's Root of ALL EVIL!

On now, as I type....

I like that artwork, very cool! TERMINATOR kicks butt and obviously they used the Arnie Connection.

On the Root of All Evil radio show, this band stopped by and I was up listening and felt what better opportunity to present an up and coming metal band to listeners looking for just that sorta thing!??! Eh?

Help support independent artists as well!

Speaking of metal.. Meshuggah. I've never been a huge metal fan, but I really like Opeth and mostly just a few songs from different bands like Strapping Young Lad (In the Rainy Season is a badass song) and whatnot. Recently though my friend dumped his entire 80 gig music collection onto my PC and along with it Meshuggah's discography. I'd heard stuff from them before but never thought much of it. But after listening to the albums Destroy Erase Improve and Contradictions Collapse I haven't wanted to listen to much else. If a better metal band than this exists, please tell me.

Not only is it heavy but it shows the band to be talented musicians with an expressiveness not comparable to other metal that I've heard, in the creative and often progressive songwriting and thoughtful lyrics.

Meshuggah really is one of those "love them or hate them" kind of bands. For me, personally, they were very difficult to get into thanks to their simplicity and repetitiveness. But that's just an opinion.

simplicity and repetitiveness

What are you listening to that makes Meshuggah look simple and repetitive?

Not defending them, and I can't stand them, but it's for the exact opposite reason. They concentrate too hard on being technical and noodly, and it ends up lacking in aesthetic.

Every song by them sounds the same to me. I can't listen for more than 10 seconds without being bored. Maybe I'm being too judgmental, but then again, it's just my opinion. And I've got what... 3 albums by them; Nothing, Catch-33, and Obzen.

Meshuggah, the weird math metal band... They have a few good songs. For example, the Saw III theme....its EPIC!!!. listen to it sometime.

Also, Im not sure what you mean by a "better" band. but in my opinion... God Forbid is an awesome band. Its a Lamb of God/Trivium mix, only on some of thier songs, though, on a lot, its more their own style. Very heavy guitar, great tone, good slightly technical riffs.

From Toby's blog:

"An extremely generous fan Etienne Dube just donated enough for motW to be able to do a full length album.. unbelievable and amazing news! Everyone else can keep donating if you wish, as further donations will help us hire orchestral musicians (cello, etc), and actually press copies instead of having this be an internet release. The recording will start Feb 10.. congratulations to Etienne and to everyone!"

Jesus f*ck, what trows said.

And,

Floridian technical metal band Atheist has been writing new material as of late, notable because the group hasn't released a studio album since 1993. Here's a statement from frontman Kelly Shaefer:

"You asked for it, the first new Atheist material in 15 years has risen to the surface and it was truly amazing, much better than we could have expected! We ended up with a bit over 3 minutes of truly Atheist, brutal, fast as hell, technical metal madness!

"My trip to atlanta began in true atheist 'cursed' style. I enter Avatar rehearsal studios and with guitar and backpack in hand, I proceed to bust my f*cking ass...like really bust ass and f*cked up my knee, sh*t I have not fallen like that in years, hahaha. So I hobbled to the practice room, and plugged in my guitar, knee bleeding and all, and of course, my guitar does not work! Most of you know I am left-handed so I could not play anyone elses guitar, so... Friday was a wash. I did however get to watch Gnostic rehearse and that was incredible; you all are in for a treat when that record comes out. Fortunately for me the Gnostic boys enlisted one of there buddies, 'Rick' to perform some guitar surgery, and I am very grateful to him for that, because we would not had been able to write anything had he not fixed that f*cker up for the next day. So everyone say, right on Ricky Boy!

"Saturday: I get my guitar back and it's perfect and from about the 6th minute of jamming (after smoking out) the new Atheist riffs started surfacing off my brain and Flynn's brain, and just like old times we were rolling, smiling ear to ear all the while. I have not written with Steve Flynn since 1991, so we did not know how it would be, but people, it was f*cking magical and inspiring. Me and Flynn used to always do most all of the arrangements for the Atheist music, and so once we started spitting riffs, we started sewing together what will be the first new Atheist material in many moons. We are thrilled to death (pun intended) to say that I will indeed be eating my words about not doing new material, but I want old fans to know how serious we are about this. We are not making a record again for any reasons but the right ones. Sure, we all need to take care of our families, but our intentions are to rip a brand new hole in the ass of technical metal, and raise the bar of expectations on the fusion of death metal, and progressive musical mind blowing. We hope that people will understand that this is truly for all the right reasons. I do expect old school metal people to be skeptical, and my words to you are - don't worry! We ain't about to f*ck this up!

"Steve Flynn is one of the most musically articulate, motherf*cking monster drummers alive on this planet. If his performance level on Unquestionable Presence was a 9 or a 10, then he is now gonna be on 20. He is faster, smarter and more creative than I have ever seen him be, and I have known him for over 25 years. I just stand in awe of his ability to manipulate rhythms. It's such a signature style that he makes it very easy for me to drop brutal riffs and never lose sight on the heaviness that seperates us from that sort of epic, finesse orientated technical metal you hear from a lot of today's tech bands. We want to confuse you, then punch you in the back of the head at the same time before your brain has time to do anything about it! What do I need to say about the skills of Tony Choy? He was masterful at piecing the Elements bass and drum sections together, so he will no doubt be laying down some dizzying sh*t fo sho!

"We know more than any writers, or others, who think they know what's best for us, and we hope everyone will not choose to be negative about all of this. Life is too short to worry about sh*t like that. Ask our good friend, the late great Roger Patterson, about borrowed time! We will not sleep till we have created the Theory of Technical Evolution! Me and Flynn discussed this sort of 'Einstien' scenario, whereas Einstien was never the brightest or smartest amongst his peers, but he was extremely creative and clever; and I think that combining the technical knowledge of this metal we play, with cleverness and creativity, will trump the equations of the many bands of today who may have more complicated scales within their tunes, and maybe are more technical than Atheist, but lack the ability to put it together in a brutal and creative manner. So people can actually still count on us not losing sight of the latter half of the definition as it's written of our sound DEATH METAL!

"With that said, we also intend on celebrating the 20th anniversary of Piece of Time release with a bunch of shows in 2009 in Europe and the U.S. A live DVD and now a brand new set of Atheist's metal puzzles for your confusing enjoyment of course. We will keep you posted on all of the details as they happen. Hold on to your brains f*ckers! Promoters and labels contact [email protected] to book shows or show interest in helping us take the record to the people who made us! We thank you all so much for making this happen for us, we totally could not do this without your endless urging to do another record! No longer can we ignore the masses of young metal heads just getting into our music for the first time, we never could have imagined it would happen that way. But once it was realized after the Helfest gig in France last summer, we knew we had to consider it. Ok, that's it for now, talk to you all soon."
