Really f*cking jealous for you seeing these bands. Ever seen Autopsy?

Alas, I did not see ALL of them, but I have heard them if not owning their work. I did see Sadus live a long time ago, as well as Pestilence on the Consuming Impulse tour. I really love that 1990s period of metal, it was all astoundingly good. Now it seems NuMetal is winning the war but there are still legions of fans who appreciate Deicide and bands that seem to adhere to what they know best... I heard Slayer again the past week and was thinking, there's not one metalhead alive who deny how important and fantastic Slayer is to the whole genre and scene! May they bang for eternity

Sheeno, seeing as your a fan of both Blind Guardian, Iron Savior and Persuader, I suggest you take a look at Savage Circus. They are the band Tomas Stauch formed upon quitting Blind Guardian and they are f*cking awesome.

They have one release so far called Dreamland Manor and in my opinion is one of the finest slabs of power metal available. Heres the opening song off the album. Not the best on it though.

Ah yeah, when I bought Persuader's fantastic Evolution Purgatory, Dreamland Manor had just come out. I remember I was going to get it, but I must've forgotten about it. That song you just linked to is really quite awesome though; it sounds as if it came straight from Imaginations From the Other Side, with Jens' slightly harsher vocals thrown in there. I'll be sure to get Dreamland Manor as soon as possible.

I'm definitely a fan of early 90's death metal, if not more than the influx of sludge and doom that started out in the mid-90's (though I've definitely been listening to more sludge/doom/stoner lately). I'm pretty certain NuMetal is completely dead, and the era of over-produced pseudo-death metal-Vader/Hate Eternal rip off bands is now. But whatever, I say let bands like Through the Eyes of the Dead and Job for a Cowboy make their money - they're dudes trying to get by, so let morons buy their sh*t, because I definitely won't. But if somebody tells me this is what death metal should sound like, I have no problem putting them in their place.

Indeed. My favourite teutonic thrash band is still Destruction though.

So, since Lagoa Burning crapped out (it seems the arena it was going to be set in was trashed, weird stuff), I'm targeting another metal venue for this summer - Alliance Fest. Moonspell, Finntroll, Exodus, 3IOB and the portuguese bands Kalashnikov and Shadowsphere kick off the first day; Arch Enemy, Anathema, Marduk close the two-day fest, with We Are the Damned (whose female singer pwns Angela Gossow, check them out on MySpace), BlackSunrise and Echnida as the national bands for the day.

Nixon advised me several times before to listen to Destruction before, me thinks, never got around to it...someday I will.

Moonspell, Finntroll, Exodus, 3IOB

I'd be so happy if I could go to that

Nah, I personally think Kreator are the best, Sodom second, and Destruction are the worst of the three. They're still all some of the best metal bands ever though, and I personally believe them to be better than America's Big Thrash Four. Much more consistent.

I quite like Sodom aswell, for a good time I preferred them to Kreator, but I think Kreator is winning me over.

You can't really go wrong with the teutonic three, really. The american bands most likely introduced me to metal (and I'm certainly not the only one), but the german's provided the ruthlessness and quality any thrash fan wants after the taste settled in. They're all class, really.

Do Anathema still play doom live?

Maybe you're forgetting Mad Butcher/Bestial Invasion?!?! Those songs are as face melting as any others! <G>

The vintage Kreator has yet to be recaptured in it's sheer brutal-ness! haha

I love it man, seriously. I think it's raw, for sure, but just sounds so killer to me even today.

I want to throw out Peter Steele's Carnivore again because someone FINALLY started posting album tracks on YT, about fukn time!

I'll do the same with After The Attack for KREATOR, it needs some exposure to those having trouble finding the rare track.

Looking into Doom Metal and more importantly Leif Edling, who can tell me what Krux and Abstrakt Algebra are like? Worth buying anything from them?

Kreator > Destruction > Sodom for me in the teutonic realm.

Kreator's Coma of Souls is one of the finest thrash albums ever created. I don't really find Sodom to be that good at all to be honest while Destruction do have some awesome moments.

The main problem I have with Destruction is that on their more early (and best-written) albums, such as Eternal Devastation, the production is fairly weak. The guitars aren't very "crunchy". Still, after listening to it for about 5 minutes you stop caring.

Oh, and... http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=47

WHAT THE HELL WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF THESE GUYS BEFORE QUICK I NEED SOMETHING BY THEM NOW ON MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOOOD

Sodom stand out on their last few albums with Witchhunter. Mortal way of Live, Expurse of Sodomy, Persecution Mania and two that followed those classics, their high point.

Sodom's two disc DVD recollects their sordid history with some live footage, it's all English subtitled so it's a chore to watch but I heard there maybe a followup DVD for them as well as VoiVod, which is over due now!!

I got some more bands needing mention but today I dug out George CorpseGrinder's old band, with a 1992 recording from Monstrosity.

Also, pulled out a 1991 recording Mental Funeral Digipak of Autopsy.

They still sound good today!

The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus must be one of my most favorite albums out there. Could anyone recommend me more avant-garde metal?

I'm also picking up the latest Evoken album, and perhaps a Necrophagist one too. Does anyone also have any idea when Wintersun plans on releasing "Time"? It's taking a mighty long time.

I have to admit I have not heard them, but if they're any good, and presuming from the past member creds, they could be.

L7 was in GTA, of course. colgate.gif

Once it's actually fully done...but I have no estimate of when that will be

On some days, I think that La Masquerade Infernale is better than The Sham Mirrors. If you haven't already, pick that up by Arcturus.

"Avant-Garde" is obviously a very eclectic genre. Two different avant-garde bands may sound completely different. Unexpect are completely different to Arcturus, but I still love their album In a Flesh Aquarium. I recommend you try it out.

Oh, and of my highest recommendation: In The Woods.... You must try them out, particularly their album Omnio. It is one of my favourite albums ever, and if you like Arcturus, I think you might like it too. It's quite hard to find, but more than worth it.

You may want to also try Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness. I only say that because I'm listening to it as we speak tounge.gif . The band has many member ties with In The Woods..., and whilst I don't find them to be quite as good, this one-song hour-long album is superb. Not quite so avant-garde, though.

Primordial is excellent. You're from Ireland, right? Ever gotten a chance to see them?

By the way, new Intronaut song up. Sounds boss.

Primordial are excellent. Unfortunately I have not seen them, only got into them properly over the last few months...just after their latest gig in Ireland mad.gif I will see them...I've bought all but two of their albums over 2 months, which is quite weird in itself for me. But the next time they gig here I shall be seeing them, most definitely.

Got Savage Circus' Dreamland Manor, Hammers of Misfortune's The August Engine and Manilla Road's Crystal Logic so as to give me something to listen to on holiday. All three seem like very good albums.

If you prefer what I call "Sword Metal", you gotta like Savatage, right? colgate.gif

What is "Sword Metal?" You mean bands like The Sword?

I've heard The Sword referred to as "stoner metal" although I think the "stoner" label in music is meaningless...

It's not any more meaningless than "power" or "black" metal. It references a certain style, and is therefore valid.

Nah, Sword metal is just fruits with swords. The Sword is straight up doom (best Sabbath cover band I ever heard, man), I don't know where the 'stoner' label comes from. Stoner metal is essentially a sludgier (lazier-sounding? Stoners are lazy, right?) version of doom ie: Electric Wizard (or sometimes it's seen as just doom with lyrics referring to the use of marijuana). The subclasses themselves kind of blur the line to the extent where most bands that are stoner metal are usually referred to as Stoner/doom.
