Just so you know, Sheeno, I don't care if a band's mainstream or not, if it's good it's good. That should be the same for everybody, unless they want to be painted as an ignorant scamp.

Yeah, I understand that. I like some mainstream bands too; Iron Maiden and the like are hardly underground. I just segregated it into the two categories of "mainstream" and "non-mainstream" for lack of better descriptions. I'm also saying that emo-esque Metalcore (to use a prime, albeit vague, example) is a mainstream sub-genre, which I don't think should rightfully be discussed here. Really, I don't like the idea of having one "Metal" topic. I think there should be more specific topics, and that should apply to every genre (not just Metal).

So yeah, I understand that not all mainstream bands should be shunned here. I agreed with that even before posting. I just used the two categories in general; I'm pretty sure that As I Lay Dying and Job For a Cowboy are significantly more mainstream than THE MAJORITY of bands normally discussed here. Sorry for not being too clear on that.

beat it.

who defines what is underground? if the underground bands are as good as you say they are, they wouldnt still be underground before too long. dip.

anyway idc, i just came in here to find new bands. i half succeeded. i had no idea bloodbath had a new album! thanks, electronic kills.

Apparently you define underground, or at least you just tried to.

Who defines what is good? Apparently you think f*ck... I'm Dead are good, so do you expect them to explode in popularity and sell 100,000 albums within the next few years? If they don't, are they still good in your eyes, despite never escaping their "underground" status? Do you think they give a sh*t? They're playing grindcore for chrissakes, there's really not anywhere to go.

If general popularity, which is basically objective, defines quality, which is definitely subjective, why are you listening to anything but top 40 radio? If Job for a Cowboy were as good as you say they are, they wouldn't be getting reamed by nearly everybody in a topic dedicated to the genre they play.

You really came in here to increase your e-peen by showing off how "brutal" your taste in metal was, and complained when people tried to recommend you stuff that trumped everything on your list.

Yeah, and what the f*ck is with the picture of that guy on the back?

The one that's also on the stamp on the front? It's all their faces photoshopped into 1, pretty weird.

haha wtf, jfac have like the worlds largest following. i'm pretty sure just because the 10 people who post in this forum dont like them doesnt mean they dont have 14million plays on myspace. i'm not even that big of a fan of them, theyre just one of the bands i listen to that happen to fall in the genre that i was listing bands of. i like music that isnt metal, so i'm not a professor of music like you pricks act like you are, but jfac are popular whether youre a fan or not.

:S

ps wtf x2, i said about the definition of underground because pricks were comparing which bands were better by measuring their popularity. im sure the backstreet boys were an unknown underground band for at least a little while before they became famous. underground means f*ck all.

pps i was taking the piss out of youse with my first post about how brutal those bands were. i made that claim with my tongue in my cheek. one dip didnt even realise that vaginal jesus were a gag band with the singer from anal c*nt.

ppps obviously with all your discussion of measurements of "e-peen's", you think its possible for someone to envy you over the internet. come back down to earth, mate. youre the one trying to impress. i'm just arguing about my beliefs.

Nobody was arguing popularity until you came in with your false sense of superiority.

I'm done with this, spend the rest of your time starting at my purty Sleep's Holy Mountain LP.

Pretend there's a picture here of the asbestos death 10".

Also, this is the only video I've been able to find of Sleep live, even though it was before they were Sleep. It actually sound pretty damn good, even better than the 10".

My previous attempts at one upping you have failed.

But, for my finale...

"Sawed Off" is easily my favorite. Buzz and Dale from the Melvins with Pat Fear from White Flag on bass. Two songs recorded during the Houdini sessions. The easiest way to describe it is Flipper-esque hardcore punk. Probably the most cussing you'll hear from Buzz aside from in interviews.

I'm sure I've posted the rest before, but oh well.

I'm sure Moonshield can come back at one-up me as well, but I've only got 3 or 4 records that I haven't posted. sad.gif

When I saw Maiden in Irvine, there was this guy in front of me and my friend and we talked about how we were so glad Anthrax was opening instead of Avenged Sevenfold like they did in England, and he brought up having the misfortune of seeing them somewhere once and when they took the stage they were in so much leather and studs that he asked "When did the f*cking L.A. Guns get on the bill?".

I felt bad for him.

Just because I add only old bands doesn't mean ....whatever it means, BUT

I want a nice balanced discussion because METAL as a whole is more then 50 odd bands, it's TONS!

Literally thousands of bands over a 30 year period, one could say.

So, I'll mention a few like;

General Surgery / St. Vitus / S.O.B. / Usurper /

DVC: Darth Vader's Church / Impentigo / Pig Destroyer /

Bethlahem / Terrorizor / Carnivore (personal Fav)

Morgoth / Filthy Christians / Sadus / Repulsion /

Gorefest / Iron Christ / Sacrifice / BloodFeast /

Anacrusis / Fates Warning / Zoetrope / CoupDeGrace (local legends!!)/

Possessed / Witchery / Agony Column / 24-7Spyz (jkng?!) /

LudiChrist / Hallows Eve / Sacrifice / Sacrilege (B.C....as well) /

Abattior / Demolition Hammer / Baphomet / Crucified /

Pungent Stench / Nocturnus / Prophecy of Doom / Cerebral Fix

Axe Grinder / Incubus (not no NuMetal pretenders!!!!) / Godflesh /

HellBastard / Atrocity / Comecon / Rigor Mortis / Pretty Maids

...Well, those I dug out of my dusty cassette collection I have on hand, most more well known

There are countless lesser known ones that didn't get the attention for one

reason or another...I just urge everyone to get to know more metal acts, expand your horizons!

Slamman, of that list, St. Vitus popped out at me. If you enjoy St. Vitus there's literally hundreds of other bands past and present to check out.

First and foremost, other classic doom metal bands:

Pentagram

Trouble

Cirith Ungol

The Obsessed

Witchfinder General

Candlemass

These are bands I can think of from the top of my head that started out from the 70s to the late 80s, all very excellent examples of classic doom.

There are also the bands that Scott Weinrich has played guitar or sang in. Two being Saint Vitus and The Obsessed, the other three being Place of Skulls, Spirit Caravan, and The Hidden Hand.

From the 90s on, there was an explosion of doom metal, along with the creation of sludge and stoner metal, and things became really muddled. I'm not sure how big you'd be on stoner/sludge, so I'll omit some of that. Some great doom bands from the 90s:

Cathedral

Earth (more droney than doom, but they have some great stuff)

Reverend Bizarre

Doomsword (epic folk doom metal, really great stuff)

sHEAVY (VERY reminiscent of Black Sabbath)

There's a lot more, but I was pretty strict on the style and eras of the bands I chose. You'll likely find a good amount of stuff by these bands on youtube, and hopefully you'll find some good stuff I haven't even mentioned.

Yeah, I've heard those as well.

I was going to put Lee Dorrian's Cathedral too...I have a collection of Doom Metal where his band features twice, which to me is silly, but there ya go! haha tounge.gif

Typo correction.

I got another comp and some CDs to add to that....

Desultory / Dead Orchestra (Disharmonic as well!) /

DisinCarnate / Konkhra / Hypocrisy / Macabre /

Ripping Corpse / Autopsy / Monstrosity / Paradise Lost / Grave

Well, there's ones I have handy to add sigh.gif
