i really dont see the big deal with turisas i mean yes they have some good stuff but metal hammer etc..over here are treating them like the inventors of 'battle metal'

They put on a good show, but are ridiculously gay. I'm not a big fan of the generic folk metal genre.

I think Metal Hammer even came up with the name "Battle Metal" and as such must have been frothing at the mouth when Turisas called an album Battle Metal (Which I do like)

they did indeed come up witht the term hence the " around the name battle metal

Ensiferum are very good, yeah. I managed to pick up their self-titled and Iron for about £8, so I have those. Good Viking Metal.

I find Wintersun to be slightly better though because they play a bit less shallow music. I only bring them up because it's the band Jari Mäenpää went on to after Ensiferum. I recommend trying Wintersun if you haven't already.

Ensiferum are a great band, very good folk metal. They also put on an amazing live show, me and my friends got to be their roadies on their Road To Victory tour.

 

And on the subject of Wintersun...Jari just oozes awesomeness. Probably one of the greatest metal albums ever released, in my opinion anyway. I'm really looking forward to Time.

If its an improvement than it must be mind blowing. The first one was flawless. I also noticed the new Opeth has leaked. Its probably been leaked for awhile now but I just noticed it. Expect a review soon.

I most certainly think it's an improvement. You can get a feel of his black metal roots in the riffs in some of the songs, and the solos are spectacular. It's a perfect mix of symphonic/black and progressive metal, and much like his previous album it's has a very unique blend of music, and I think it turned out amazing. The Adversary took me some time to get into, but angL just completely absorbed me right from the first track. Definite must listen.

 

I might as well given the new Opeth a listen, Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals proved to be well on that one track on angL.

I found that snippet of new stuff to be pretty average as well, that wah solo by Kirk wasn't all that great really. It looks like the new album is shaping up to be a sub standard version of the Black album in my opinion.

Yes, but isn't a sub-standard version the Black Album better than any of the last three full-lengths? And understand I never really liked the Black Album myself; it's about a 6/10 in my books. I just loathed the last three.

 

Still, I was not expecting anything even remotely worth listening to. That new song sounds very mediocre, but still slightly better than what I anticipated.

The new Metallica stuff sounds really really bad in my opinion, much like the other three latest albums. Me, I'm gonna stick to the Master of Puppets era cause thats when they were at their best in my eyes.

 

And on the subject of the new Opeth, I think its great, much more solid then Ghost Reveries but not as good as Blackwater Park, well nothing can really beat Blackwater Park. Fans of Akerfeldt, have you heard the new Bloodbath songs?

Totally agree. They're descending in quality. I can't see them as a Metal band anymore, don't know why.

EDIT: On topic with the Metallica discussion, they started getting bad with the Black album, with some definite pop rock influence thanks to Bob Rock (see: a f*cking ballad? f*ck that. Metallica isn't f*cking Poison, but they might as well be, the f*cking LA fa**ots that they are). Then they put out a decent blues-inspired rock album with Load, but they showed obvious signs of tiring of the heavy sound their mildly retarded superfans and regular metalheads alike had grown to love since their rise in popularity. ReLoad was a boring rehash of Load mixed with them trying to sound "heavier" again, but it fell flat. S&M was an overindulged live album guaranteed to spurn fan-based fellatio (cunnilingus in Lars' case), and I don't dare wish to go any further than that.

In my opinion they hit rock bottom with St. Anger. From what I heard from that, it sounds like a step in the right direction. Not saying its fantastic, it just didn't sound too bad.

 

Expect a GTAForums review of the new Opeth from me soon. I'll just say this, it surprised me.

Fans of Akerfeldt, have you heard the new Bloodbath songs?

I have. It sounded to me like they were trying to hard to fit into the typical death metal stereotype this time around...Resurrection Through Carnage and Nightmares Made Flesh were great, but these new songs are a bit lacking in comparison. I must say though, Akerfeldt's improved growls are amazing.

 

As for Opeth's new album...it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but at least it was better than Ghost Reveries. My favorite album will always be Still Life (it was the one that turned me on to Opeth to begin with), with Blackwater Park and Deliverance tied for second place...so I'd have to say this album falls pretty far down the list. To me, it's better than Ghost Reveries and about the same as My Arms, Your Hearse, as far as how much I like it...and besides that, some people have been saying that Watershed reminds them of MAYH anyway, so I'd say it fits.

 

One thing I noticed right off the bat is how Heir Apparent sounds a lot like Emperor's Thus Spake the Nightspirit near the 4:00 mark. Pretty interesting if you think about Mike and Ihsahn's friendship.

 

Anyway, I'm no reviewer so I'll just stop there.
