I'd forgotten the Festerday album was due out. h.IV+ was brilliant (back when they were still Havoc Unit), though the stuff they release under the Festerday name is very different from the industrial black metal they were releasing under the old name.

First demo when he was just as good as Devil Doll.

Not sure what's in the waters at Artisan Era but they rarely disappoint with their releases. Symphonic tech death. Hell of an EP.

seen a guy with an in flames shirt yesterday and got reminded that a few of their earlier albums aren't too bad. don't particularly hold up that great and some of their releases are kinda memey at this point but they have a good few tracks dotted around.

The trilogy of Jester Race/Whoracle/Colony is pretty good. That's about where my love for IF ends. Lunar Strain is okay, if a little generic, and everything post-Claymore is sh*te.

The only Gothenburg scene band who has consistently churned out good music is At The Gates. Even Dark Tranquility had a period of weirdness that lasted from about Damage Done to Construct.

Oh, and this is great:

I remember when I don't give them a chance and I put 10 000 Days which is a good album then is a good band.

Super psyched for Obscura/Fallujah/Allegaeon/First Fragment on Monday (even though I've got a workout scheduled with a mate at 7:30 the following morning).

Not heard much Allegaeon so been trying them out. Quite like it.

Also booked to see Author + Punisher in April.

-EDIT-

Horrendously underrated band. Amazing hybrid of OSDM and D-Beat punk.

These days Ben McCrow is one of the vocalist for Extreme Noise Terror.

Out of curiosity, who would be your top five favorite metal guitarists? Here are mine...

1. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)

2. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)

3. Euronymous (Mayhem)

4. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)

5. Quorthon (Bathory)

I've been a metalhead since I was a little kid. My sixth grade science teacher got angry when she asked me to explain the difference between venom and poison and I told her that "Poison is hair metal and Venom is black metal"

Speaking of Venom, here's a classic from back in the day...

Quorthon was cheesy and Bathory is just Venom rip-off, Mantas can ride a nice solo over Euronymous/Quorthon grave.

I only can take Mustaine and Iommi (thanks for the doom tone), I never was into Randy R. or Ozzy solo stuff.

Eh, to each their own.

As much as I liked Bathory's black metal stuff from the 80's, they truly didn't hit their stride until the 90's when they shifted to Viking metal.

Quorthon spent a lifetime denying that Venom had any influence on his work, but there are some old interviews where he tended to be rather contradictory, maybe that is why he changes the sound instead.

My avatar should make it clear who my favorite metal guitarist is. Even Mustaine and Ozzy tried to haggle Criss into their bands, but he refused.

Mark Reale is another favorite of mine. I really wish this lineup worked out.

For me is hard to choose 5 guitarists because my list is just strong, but maybe I can pick most of the NWOBHM bands like Russ Tippins (Satan,Blind Fury,Pariah), Kevin Heybourne (Angel Witch), Mark Gallagher (Raven), Brian Tatler (Diamond Head), Mantas (Venom), etc.

In the other hand, Tommy Vetterli (Coroner), Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower), Piggy (Voivod), Andy LaRoque, Hank Shermann/Michael Denner from Mercyful Fate, Murray/Smith from Maiden, KK Downing, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, Rolf Kasparek (Running Wild), Kai Hansen, Jeff Hanneman, Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost), Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), etc...

Steffen Kummerer (Obscura), Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist) and Chuck Schuldiner (Death, Control Denied) are pretty hard to fault.

In terms of skill/proficiency and songwriting chops, I reckon you could fill the top 20-30 slots with technical/progressive death metal lead guitarists before other subgenres get a look in.

I still think NWOBHM riffs and songwriting are bombastic still to this day and I love technical bands that is why I mention Watchtower, Coroner, etc.

Chuck Schuldiner is good, but he was taking and replicating what Atheist, Watchtower, Cynic and many bands were doing before and I don't deny their big influence.

I remember reading an interview of Atheist saying their album Piece of Time was confusing people thinking they got influenced by Human because was release at the same time and we know was just delayed.

I'd give Atheist a huge amount of credit in TDM/PDM but I've always felt they're far more bass driven (by virtue of Tony Choy and Roger Patterson) than they were lead driven.

In all fairness Coroner, Atheist and Death were effectively contemporaries, all releasing their breakthrough albums (or breakthrough progressive albums) in '91. Cynic actually came a bit later- only releasing a demo in '91 and not cutting their first full-length until '93.

How about drumming?, I wish to play like Steve Flynn and I'm trying to figure out how to play those patterns and I like Josh drumming as well in Elements.

Is funny as Chuck always was flattered to be the father of Death Metal and he was giving more credit to Possessed, Massacre, Slayer and other bands instead.

Took very few pictures of Obscura last night but quite liked this one of Rafael Trujillo.

2cg0tft.jpg

Acoustics at The Fleece are always a bit disappointing but Obscura sounded pretty good. First Fragment and Fallujah suffered badly from the mix, Fallujah in particular sounded really muddy and chaotic.

Allegaeon were impressive. I've not heard much of them before this gig but found them really endearing. Had a good chat with Riley McShane, their vocalist, after their set.
