I can't remember if I've shared this here before, but I'm really enjoying Jute Gyte lately. Anybody who's a fan of microtonal metal might like it too. Here's his Bandcamp. I recommend Purdurance and Oviri.

Sad to hear about the departure of Whispered's bassist and that a new album is still very far away.

The following song is always the first thing I listen to in the mornings. Like coffee, it never fails to get me pumped and ready to face anything.

"And he moves... with the swift pace unrivaled. Unseen by the aspirants' eyes. And he knows... in his heart so unbridled, that he'll soon execute the flawless STRIKE! ... STRIKE! ... STRIKE!..."

Man... So awesome.

I can't believe I haven't visited this corner before. I listen to almost all kinds of Rock and Metal, lately I've been listening to some old-school Black Metal. I haven't really found newer bands inside the genre that I've liked but I've been exploring and finding great appeal in the early Mayhem albums... well, I've been listening to the Deathcrush EP for quite a while and appreciated it musically and up to some degree the originality (for the time) of the concept, but that was until I finally decided to check out the lyrics and having to take a break to digest what was really going on, oh well. I guess I'll take the slap on the wrist for being no different and saying De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album is perhaps a lot more refined in terms of the lyrics and execution.

So, I take the opportunity to share the track of the same name, the one that I've enjoyed its musicality the most since it includes somewhat clean vocals and quite different from anything I've ever heard:

-snip-

I always listen to that album on Halloween night without fail. It's great! You should give "Wolf's Lair Abyss" a shot too, if you haven't yet.

I came here to drop the following track, by a band I've shared here before as well. Shining do one of my favourite things in music which is to always leave the best song in an album for last. That cements them even better in the memory, closes the album on a high note, and leaves me yearning to revisit it again as soon as possible.

Here's one of their best songs, closer to "Redefining Darkness", stuck in my head all day. Kickass acoustic parts, kickass soloing, best ending to a song I've ever heard. It hits all the right notes:

Little stupid mistake of me: I meant black metal, not death metal. Posted it late at night, today I suddenly wondered if didn't I confused both genres. Yep, time to throw rocks at me!

or confettis, happy new year folks!

Thought I'd share this release, Das Tor by Paysage d'Hiver, a Swiss ambient black metal musician. He has a good selection of music on his Bandcamp for anyone interested in dark ambient and black metal that doesn't sound like it was recorded onto a cassette using a toilet roll tube.

For those who like dark ambient, check out Lustmord and Atrium Carceri.

Exodus and Municipal Waste are touring together soon. Thrash across the generations? I can only imagine how fun those pits will be. Hopefully I can make it down to NYC to check it out. I've seen Waste a bunch, got to help carry Tony as he boogie boarded with a broken leg, but I've never seen Exodus.

Also, I just remembered Warrel Dane died. "Heart Collector" has been stuck in my head for hours.

Didn't really think all that much of, or really pay much attention, to Gorod previously but after a number of runs, I must conclude that this is seriously good

Not a video, apologies, (they only have one live video but its pretty muddy) but if you like death/grind/hardcore smooshed together here's Unravel, from my hometown of Perth. They get to support Cattle Decapitation who are touring next month. Cannot f*cking wait.

**Seems I spoke too soon about the paucity of Unravel material on the Tube, here is a song from there upcoming debut album just announced today.

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently, aside from a random crust and Swedeath/Entombedcore binge I've been on, I'm mostly enjoying Æther Realm's fantastic "Tarot", one of the best produced metal albums I've ever heard.

Might have posted this before but Cruz are awesome. Barcelona based HM-2 driven, crust ladened old school death metal.

I've recently started getting into some German deathcore. Discovered this one-man deathcore/electronic project by the name of ''I Drink My Coffee Alone''.

The very first song in this video:

Gig review time!

Just got back from Cattle Decapitation. It's the first time they ventured out west to Perth, Australia and everyone was absolutely ravenous for it. My foot hurts. My neck hurts. My ears are ringing more than usual. My face has been melted off. I had heard so much about what a beast they are live and I cannot say I was disappointed. It was phenomenal. Glad they stuck to the two most recent albums with the exception of 'Regret and the Grave' from The Harvest Floor as I tend to find anything before that really hard to listen to. 'Monolith of Inhumanity' and 'The Anthropocene Extinction' are both very strong albums. It's not that I dislike grind, I just find those early albums unlistenable. Its good to see now that they are headlining their own tours here, instead of been supports and turning their hosts into feeble wrecks under their mighty onslaught (Thy Art is Murder was left in the dust the last time)

It was a full house and all the fan favorites got the treatment, 'Forced Gender Reassignment' was absolutely monstrous with Travis Ryan's vocal performance and stage command IMO something else and David McGraw just drives the band along on the sticks with a relentless performance, and 'The Carbon Stampede', 'Pacific Grim', 'Prophets of Loss' and 'A Living Breathing Defecating Piece of Meat' among others all went down to a grateful audience. 'Your Disposal' rounded off the night perfectly. Their brutality and intensity on record translates absolutely perfectly in live form. Once they finish destroying South Africa, I hope they get their backsides working on a new album.

I'm not normally much of a fan of tech-death but Archspire's "Relentless Mutation" absolutely blew me away.

Oli's vocals do get a little grating at times but by gee by jingo by crikey, that album as far as technicality goes is off the scale. My favourite of that album is 'Human Murmuration'. As for Spencer Prewitt? Out of this world.
