So iv'e been listening to iron maiden allot and iv'e judas priest are good to. They were both a part of the NWOBHM.

could anyone recommend some songs and albums to listen to.

I know I'll be slaughtered for this, but Lamb of God are pretty good live. I saw them in Febuary and Between the Buried and Me were one of the supports, I missed half of BTBAM's set though because they started playing early.

 

 

In other news; I've ordered a Hypocrisy hoodie, and it's taking goddamn ages to ship. It's coming all the way from germany you see.

Listened to Forefather today, quite like them I must say. Must make an effort to check the rest of their stuff, as I only have the album Steadfast.

For some strange reason I thought they would be a power metal band...

I was always under the impression that Drudkh were NSBM...

They're always associated with those bands, since they're on a label that has a lot. Plus they're from Ukraine, and about one in 3 metal bands from there IS nsbm. They're lyrics aren't at all hate towards any group of people - the closest they get is nationalism. I know two of the members were in Hate Forest, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. They can have their views, but as long as they keep them out of the music, and the music is good, I don't have a problem with it. I might not give money to the band still, and buy their sh*t second-hand, but whatever.

I get what you're saying, it's sort of the same thing for me with Burzum. Varg Vikernes is well-renowned for his racialist, anti-socialist and eugenicist ideas - all of which I'm fairly opposed to - but he keeps them out of his work with Burzum. I have no doubt that I probably have listened to a few NSBM bands, since a lot of the time it's difficult to make a distinction between them and pagan bands.

I guess Dream Theater is still going to trek on, but I don't understand how. I admit that I think the past couple of albums have certainly instilled some disinterest for me, like they lost their creative momentum or something. So maybe some new blood will help, but, it will be a weird change for sure.

 

I'm sure the avenged sevenfold fans don't even know who dream theater is. Let alone Mike Portney.

Maybe the song writing could get better actually. I always assumed Portnoy was the main guy behind the lyrics and stuff. They've certainly been really cheesy at times. If they stick with session drummers they should use Blake Richardson when he isn't doing anything with BTBAM. He's probably even better than Portnoy.

Portnoy and Petrucci are the main lyric writers, for the past two albums it's mostly been them Labrie only wrote one song (Prophets Of War) so they have lost one of the main lyric writers yes. However Portnoy was known for being a bit of a control freak at times he actually instilled a rule sometime after Scenes From A Memory that lyrics had to be presented in a certain manner which caused John Myung to stop contributing lyrics.

 

It'll be interesting to see what happens, the past two albums I enjoyed but they were pretty similar in sound so there was a fear the next one would be the same thing repeated. My hope is that they'll change this now that Mike has left seeing as it appears on the surface that it was him guiding them in that direction.

At the moment, I am really loving Soilwork's new album "The Death Broadcast"

They're coming to town with High on Fire, money for the tickets is no problem, but getting out of work is. What makes the show even better (if it can get any better) they aren't playing in the dump that we call The Rave. Only real metal bands play at the Pabst theater.

So Megadeth's new track came out recently. They recorded it specifically for Guitar Hero, so it's loaded with solos (they actually told him to add more).

 

 

 

Pretty awesome, it's their first studio recording since Ellefson rejoined. Hope they can keep this up when they record their next album.
