Wolf68k
I recently got my PC back from repair the other week. Now they replaced it with a new motherboard and they checked everything and said there were no more problems. I sent it back because on start up you wouldn't hear the beep sound, or sometimes after getting the beep and logging onto windows it would either freeze on me, or just randomly restart. I got it back and it still happened, so I rang them up and they said it might be my keyboard and mouse usb thing that's causing the psu to think somethings wrong hence the surging itself to stop from damage. So after I tried some different usb slots in the back of my PC since I have about 6. All working okay for a couple of days. Today same thing was happening. So I got hold of a usb mouse and keyboard that are corded and not wireless ( borrowed them ) and now everything's working great again. What I'm asking is, can the wireless usb mouse and keyboard really make the PC do things like that to the motherboard? If so should I just go buy a new keyboard and mouse and it will be okay? Unless your PC is on one side of the room and you're sitting on another, basically a media center PC, then using a wireless keyboard and mouse is kinda pointless. Plus for gaming there is some lag, but then I guess if you use it enough you learn to adjust for it. My suggestion is to just stick with the wired keyboard and mouse. It could be that the wireless set you have just grew faulty, or just plain old, which can cause unknown problems.
Rebel
Still doesn't want to turn on and restarts on my randomly with the wired mouse and keyboard. Shame since I only got it back a week ago from repair and have to send it back off again.
Cursed
I am getting a new 1TB hard drive to replace my 160GB one, so I am storing my files on my laptop ready to transfer them, but I was wondering, can I back up my GTAIV save files so I don't have to start again. Pat
I've been meaning to ask about this for a while. I'm on an old Dell Dimension 2400 (circa 2003, IIRC), and it has a CD/DVD drive combo (like most PCs that came out after 1999). Problem is, it thinks it's the DVD drive is a CD drive, so when I go into My Computer, I see a CD-R drive (the actual CD drive) and a plain old CD drive (the DVD drive). I know for a fact that it's a DVD drive, I watched movies on it all the time before I wiped my HDD. Could it be a driver problem, a loose cable... what? I'm honestly stumped. Pico
Does it say it's a CD drive, or it only reads CDs? If it just reads CDs and not DVDs then the drive is going. If it says it's a CD drive... Here's the drivers page for it, it might be worth a shot reinstalling them. Drivers page

Nah nothing to worry about. I have the same problem. It's just XP confused I think. As for how to fix it, you could try a firmware flash of the DVD drive to the latest firmware. You got to know what the DVD drive is first though. Or you could just uninstall it from Device Manager (right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager) and then restart the PC, Windows may detect it as a DVD drive after this. Pat
I'll try that, and if that doesn't work, I'll check for a product sticker on it when I put my Compaq's graphics card in the Dell. I'm basically in the process of merging two sh*tty computers right now to make a somewhat acceptable one. RAM and a graphics card from the Compaq, a 500W Thermaltake PSU, eventually a 1GB stick of RAM to replace the 612MB I'm limited to now (I'd get more if DDR2 wasn't so f*cking expensive), and I'll probably keep everything else stock. I'd take the motherboard out of the Compaq, but I used to get BSODs on YouTube (just an example. There were millions of other things I got BSODs on) on that piece of sh*t, and I'm pretty sure the motherboard was the cause. It's also got a 300GB Seagate that I need to swap with the Dell's stock 72GB. And yes, I realize it would be less effort to just build an average PC. Life sucks when you're saving up cash. Pico
(I'd get more if DDR2 wasn't so f*cking expensive)... ... ... It's also got a 300GB Seagate that I need to swap with the Dell's stock 72GB. Expensive? It's like $30 for 2GB of DDR2 And lol... 72GB. I couldn't imagine being so limited. The original 320GB my computer came with, after being formated and having Vista installed was down to 298, I thought was low after a couple months. Now I've got around 1.8GB internal space... and a 500GB external I'll be sh*tting myself when they start coming out with TB drives in the double digits. The highest I've seen so far is 2TB. Pat
Guess I should get a new friend to search Newegg for me. Cheapest he found was 2GB for $80. Pat glares at Joe. ...or maybe I'm mixing up my DDRs.
leik oh em jeez! Why would you replace the drive? If you can back up files, then I assume the drive is still working. I'd just add in the 1Tb as a secondary drive. Assuming the 1Tb drive is SATA, it would be easier to add it than to replace the other one. If space in the case is the problem, You can out the screws on the bottom as spacers and just sit the drive in the bottom of the case. If power is a problem, you can get molex Y-splitter cables. I did both of those to get my 1Tb drive in.
Girish
Guess I should get a new friend to search Newegg for me. Cheapest he found was 2GB for $80. That has to be DDR. DDR2 comes cheaper than that. I looked up on Newegg; a 2x2GB DDR2 memory sticks cost about $64.

Pat
Yeah, I'm getting my DDRs mixed up. Either way, sh*ts way more expensive than I thought. Having a motherboard from '03 really sucks.
Rebel
I'm going to buy an external HDD and from the reviews I've been looking at it all says the thing comes formatted with FAT files, and they've all reformatted it to NTFS files. Now, what exactly are FAT files/NTFS files and how easy would it be to format it to NTFS when I get it?
anus
How easy? When you get it, plug it in, go to My Computer, right click the drive, click Format, select NTFS under File System, uncheck Quick Format, and click on Format. It's that easy, you really won't have any trouble with it. @Pat, You really should get into PC gaming man. Once you get a decent PC, you'll never even think of switching back to consoles. They aren't really expensive either. $500 can get you a good build even.

I really miss it, but if I tried to run SA now, I'd average about 5FPS. Believe me, I know how inferior console gaming is to PC gaming.

M. H. Hunter III
Right so earlier today i had some issues with my internet not being able to connect and i managed to get that going again. -However now when i go to use Any search engine my browser both FF and IE give me an error saying simply 'failed to connect' although this site appears valid. FF can't establish a connection to the server at localhost. And to boot on this comp there is no proxy or such to be interfering here. Windows XP sp3 any ideas with this? First thing to do of course is to do a spyware scan. Ad/spy/malware loves to make it so you can't search the web so you can find out how to remove them. Add a virus scan to that as well. Even if you already have them try going to the following sites: http://www.lavasoft.com/ - Ad-Aware http://www.safer-networking.org/ - Spybot Again the bad guys want to try to keep you from being able to get what you need to remove them. M. H. Hunter III
i also ran malwarebytes with those two seemed to snuff out my problem. I honestly didn't think it was ad/malware issue, but hell now i know for/if the next time. thanks wolf La famiglia è tutto The strength of a family, like the strength of an army is in its loyalty to each other.~ Mario Puzo ~

Fozzy Fozborne
Dumb question: In firefox, you know how when, if you just type something into the address bar it takes you to the closest website... my default search engine got changed to yahoo. How do I change it back to the way it was when first installed?
Edmachine
If I understood you correctly... Click the Yahoo! icon on the left hand side of the search bar (I think you're talking about this, correct me if I am wrong) and choose Google. Uhh, if you meant something else, please screen-shoot it. We will be the arms that lift you up We will be the hand that strike you down

Wolf68k
In the address bar type about:conifg If you get the warning just uncheck the box click the button In the Filter bar type keyword.URL What does the Value say? By default it should be for Google and the I'm Feeling Lucky. Personally I don't like that so I changed it to this: http://www.google.com/search?btnG=Google+Search&q= And got rid of the search bar that is on the toolbar.
