Democrab
Is anyone else having problems with Internet Explorer 8? It keeps crashing randomly every time I play online games or open a new tab or do anything really. Sorry if this has been posted before. Why are you even bothering with Internet Explorer? Mozilla is way better. I can't open any tabs on Internet Explorer 7 (and 8 too), or it will crash. Jesus Christ, we know FireFox exists. Give it up, some people like IE. Why not? IE doesn't help HTML coders, the amount of times I've seen one complain because their site only renders wrongly in IE is staggering, IE needs to die and pave way for Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Sure, it doesn't concern you, but if you want to be one of the masses responsible for holding back the internet, be my guest, afaik, Firefox can be modded to look exactly like IE, so there's no real reason not to go Firefox... Or is it some pre-release beta version? I downloaded IE8 yesterday; it shows me the version as 8.0.6001.18702 and I tried opening multiple tabs and playing online games too. It did not crash for me at any point.

Silly Me No, you're allowed to speak anything about everything, but it needs to stick with the forums' rules. I posted my opinion too, and that is that Firefox is better than IE because IE tried to imitate lot's of things that Firefox had but didn't implement those proper. My sister thinks 'only fa**ots use firefox'. 2. My mom thinks it'll break her laptop 3. my computer is dead, but i'm getting my own laptop (or desktop) soon Back to mozilla for me once we order it and i get it. Also, what are the essential components for a computer (specifically, a server)? i'm thinking about setting up a home server some day, and want to go with the HP mediasmart, but i'd rather build my own to allow for the most customization. From what i remember, computers need... -Motherboards -Hard drives -RAM -Fans -Processors -Floating point units -Video cards Did i forget anything? Edmachine
@poopskin: A case. Question: Why aren't desktop CPUs made larger? Like, 4x4cm? Increasing the size should have an affect on free space, in which they could fit more cores/bigger caches/whatever in. Sure, they might heat up more, but good cooling isn't hard to find, right? This is a question that has popped up in my mind several times. Of course, we still need Atom-like processors for small devices, such as PDAs. But for desktops, size doesn't really matter (to a certain extent, obviously). poopskin
Well, i suppose you could run a computer without a case, but all the components'd have to go somewhere...How rediculous, how i'd forget the easiest-to-see part...
Gouveia
What would you run in the server? I think you wouldn't need specs like our (from me and my dad) does. It's an Intel Xeon or something, 16GB of ram DDR2, onboard Intel Graphics Accelerator, 5X500GB SATA HDD in RAID, Unix running on command line (without any graphics). This server is used for VoIP, for webhosting and to host our database for the ERP system. I think that if you want a home server, it would need to have 4GB+ of RAM, a good HDD (500GB+ SATA) and at least a dual-core processor. The video card isn't something to worry when it comes to servers, since you obviously won't run games on it. One thing that you should invest heavily is in the cooling. On our server (codename: Ironman), we have six fan-coolers and a gas-cooling system so the processor is always running at its best. I know I may be talking lots of bullsh*t, but I'm just trying to help

Because it takes a small amount of time for traces to move from the actual smaller die on the chip to the motherboards chips, its better to have that as short as you can have it. leik oh em jeez!
Does standard DDR2 or SLI-Ready DDR2 work in server boards? Do the server boards actually REQUIRE the ECC RAM, or is it just for reliability/compatibility?

gtathebest4ever
one of my speakers is always loud. it doesn't gradually become louder or quieter, it's only silent when i turn the volume way down. if i move it just a little bit from that position, it immediately goes to the loudest sound. i know it's probably a hardware problem and i'm gonna take it back to have it fixed, but just to be sure, do any of you guys know of a software problem that might be causing this? Girish
Is there any way that I can check the speed of my USB ports? Go to Device Manager in Control Panel and expand 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'. The controller that has 'USB2 Enhanced' in its description is the high speed one and the one you should be using. Mostly, the USB ports at the front of your cabinet are never high speed. I suggest using the ports located at the rear side of your cabinet. They are the high speed ones directly powered by your mobo. I have a problem. It's the 3rd DVD I try to write and it just fail at 90%, rendering it illegible. Can it be the drive, or is it the DVD disc itself that can be of bad quality and/or scratched? It's either the drive or the burning software that you're using. Try burning another DVD using some other burning software. I'll suggest IMGBurn; free, easy and pretty good.

What are you going to run it for? Our server has five 500GB HDDs slapped together with a RAID array and I think it's a bit of overkill, but as the saying goes, small and peaceful stuff are for hippies. "As more as may" 1TB drives sound a little bit too extreme, but it's up to you. Sprackta
How vital is a disc clean up and disc defragment to your computer and how often should you do it?
Wolf68k
How vital is a disc clean up and disc defragment to your computer and how often should you do it? Depends on how often you create and modify files. If you're doing things like video editing or photoshop, basically working with large files then the more they are fragged the harder they will be to work with. If all you do is surf the web and email, then you shouldn't be too fragged and what files are fragged will usually get deleted anyway by the browser. For gamers it's always suggested to defrag after installing a game. Even if you defragged before installing it I would still do it after. As for other forms of clean up, like the registry again depends on how you use your system. Installing and uninstalling programs tends to leave crap behind in the registry and cleaning that out can help the OS to read through it faster. And then chkdsk can usually help to find problem with system files
Slamman
Well, I used to make topics for things like this, but the old "should I buy this product?" is getting used and abused in that sense. Here's my query... I bought two case/mobo Dell GX280s for $5 each! I have enough parts to equip one at a time so far. I put my ATI Radeon X300 in one and the other was using integrated graphics. However, both of those options are only 128MB of video RAM at rather slow speeds, not up to par for advanced gaming... So doing some more Search Engine post reviews, I found a gaming card seller review that listed an actual 2.8Ghz Dell GX280 being used with the EVGA version of this here nVidia; http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...ETCjCVqHCjCdwwp It's cheaper then the EVGA and I imagine JUST as good, considering BFG's rep. Under $200USD! Still VERY spendy for someone without work, but I'd consider it in light of the glowing reviews, and that this guy had a weaker Dell then my own and he's very happy gaming with it. What are your thoughts? The thing is the card can transition easily to a better CPU supported/chipset board. The plus for the Dell system is I have the restore Windows discs so these PATA drives I do have are formatted and running already.

Fozzy Fozborne
According to a review I've read, the GTX 280 is 18-ish percent faster than the GTX 260. If that's worth $100 to you (translation latest games at high settings), the definitely go for the 280. Don't forget all the GTX series (apart from 295) Scale to 3 cards, so you won't have to fully upgrade for a while.
