Defragment your PC, uninstall games you don't play and download CCleaner to clean your registry.

Will a Tagan Force II 600w PSU manage okay with a system with a 4870X2? I've read various reviews that say even with overclocked processors and crazy numbers of hard drives the total draw is pretty much never over 500w under load, now in my mind that makes the minimum recommended wattage of 650 pointless (because obviously they factor in crappy PSUs). Now I'll be running a stock clocked Q6600, 3GB DDR2/667 RAM, two hard drives, a disk drive, 3 fans (two of which are 250mm) and hopefully this 4870X2. Also, the PSU has 64A over 6 +12V rails, I know the card needs at least 40A but I aren't sure if the number of rails has anything to do with it, so will I be okay? Any help is appreciated, I don't wanna end up wasting £350. blush.gif

Here's a link to the PSU:

Can anyone recommend a program that will allow me to easily convert DVD's to preferably DivX or Xvid files so I can stream them to my 360. I am mostly looking at episodes of TV shows and not actual movies not that it matters. Got a few series I want to watch without the whole disc swapping thing, especially when my 360 sounds like a jumbo and that's before you add in the disc drive spinning. My knowledge of video editing and converting goes as far as backing-up DVD's so I want something easy to use for a Newb. I've tried a few but they either won't work or are a trial deal. Running Vista might be the cause of some not working so it needs to work with Vista and if not I've got an install of XP I can fall back on for this.

avi.NET 2.5.8.0 (Multi-Media Converter)

Give this program a try it seems to do exactly what you are looking for it's free! with great reviews.

I want to install Ubuntu Linux on a laptop and dual-boot between Windows and Ubuntu since I've been booting from the live distro it's just too slow. I want to know, though, if it's possible to uninstall Ubuntu later on and leave the Windows partition intact. If I uninstall Ubuntu I want to have Windows exactly the way it was before, with all the users, settings, documents, everything untouched, as if I had never installed Ubuntu. I haven't done this before so I don't have have much knowledge about the topic.

S'lessee, I only have 48 or so gigs left on my hard drive (a measly 177 gigs total sad.gif , When i'll need a Terrabyte. The complete MST3K series is ~150GB!!), and i download a LOT of huge files. I suppose i could Uninstall my 30 Gig Linux partition (I never use it anyway), but i don't know how to do that (Remount the 8.04 ISO?).

@Lostfender: If you use the WUBImabobber it should be fine when uninstalled.

Also, say i get a new hard drive (~1TB). does the voltage of my PSU or whatever matter, and can i move absolutely everything (Filesystem and all) over to the new drive and still be able to boot into windows (Basically, what i'm saying is that if i move my windows installation and all that over to a new drive, will the move affect the transferred installation)?

"Can I use the Recovery console to fix my tcpip.sys file? It's giving me BSoDs (supposedly). I found my disc. Is there any chance it will want to format?" -Myself

Didn't get an answer. So it started to bug me again. Today. Does the Rec. Con. copy original files over the faulty ones? I haven't used, I don't know. I need help in this, I finally found my CD.

EDIT: Also, does anyone know how much does the new Asus ARES gaming PC cost? I can't find anything. The beast's price should be mind blowing.

While there was no mentioning of BSoDs whatsoever, I still replaced the file. I'll see if it took effect tomorrow, too lazy to restart now. Thanks for the link!

Assuming it doesn't put you over whatever your power supply is capable of, it should be fine. I don't believe hard drives draw too much power, and if you're replacing the one you currently have, it should be about the same power usage.

As for the second part of your question, it is possible, although I don't think you can do it simply by copying everything over (like a drag and drop). It'd be better to use an imaging program, like Norton Ghost. That program costs money, although I'm sure there are some good, free ones out there, too.

Here's a tip for Vista users, don't mess with your power settings, create your own power profile because there's a chance Vista will turn off all your USB devices or give you freezes and crashes. I accidentally clicked the power saver option and straight away the mouse and keyboard stopped working, a restart only resulted in a freeze on the login page. I had to go into Safe mode and change the settings. Now honestly if Vista is supposed to be more user friendly how come this sort of crap happens? Casual users would have no idea what do in this situation.

Don't get me wrong Vista isn't as bad as its made out to be but its still causing the same amount of pain as XP did in its first few years. Makes me want to get a Mac!

Here you go! try this works on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Editon icon14.gif

Open a Terminal by selecting Applications then Accessories then Terminal

At the prompt, type in: (without the quotes)

"cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~"

That will copy xorg.conf to your home folder.(BACKUP)

Then enter:

"sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf"

enter your password when prompted

A graphical text editor will open. Scroll down to the section that looks something like:

SubSection Display

Depth 24

Modes 1024 768? 800 600? 640 480?

EndSubSection

Add the resolution you want ej; (1680x1050?) to the Modes line. Make sure it’s a resolution that your monitor and Graphics Card can support. Then save it!

For changes to take effect immediately you have to (restart X) or hit CTRL + Backspace.

Good Luck!

Works on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Editon

@Ed try this link ->

Oh and PS, that link to the file works fine, ignore the people who say it's a blank page.

Tried it, didn't work, got a BSoD few minutes ago. Any other possible solutions?

The maximum resolution your monitor supports. I think.

EDIT: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_resolution) Have a read there. Got me a bit confused.

The native resolution of a monitor mostly applies to LCDs, it's basically the number of pixels they have, anything higher or lower and it will just scale it down or up to the number of pixels it actually has, so the native is what it was intended to run at. Anything besides native on LCDs tends to just look like ass.

HELP!!

I turned Vista on High Contrast. Upon 'reverting' it back to normal, I noticed my windows aren't clear/see-through like they used to be. When I checked to in Appearances there doesn't seem to be the option to revert it back the way I had it. ie. cool, slightly see-trough windows.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

See, i may be a lucky recipient of a Pentium-1 Win '95 machine (YAAY! No more DOSBOX! I'll be able to play some serious DOOM...If i can find a sound card for it.) in the following months (School hand me downs, specifically decrepid tech lab computers that they didn't throw away), and i need a program that will be able to mount floppy images and will run under windows 95*. can you help me find such a program?

*My computer doesn't have a floppy drive, so i have to do the following process:

1. Put Floppy mounting program's EXE+the neccisary disk images on a data CD, Then move the files over to the windows 95 machine. -> 2. Install floppy mounting programs. -> 3. Burn Floppy images to a floppy disk. -> 4. Done!

Not related to Tech, but, how do I transform movies into gifs?

I think VirtualDub does that automatically, but you could always save each frame as an image then put them all together with some .gif making program...

Whatever's easier for you.

That's exactly my problem, importing frames. All programs that I've download didn't work so well, rendering the quality so ugly and/or f*cked up colors.

Try with VirtualDub then, or some other video editor that does the same, then it should be automatic.

Also, what would the specs be on a ideal rig for DOS gaming?

I want it to be able to run at least the first system shock while still being slow enough for even older games.
