One of my friends wants to build a PC. He will be playing games on it. He is not sure which OS to choose for games, XP Pro or Vista Ultimate. Which os is better for games?

What's better, a GEFORCE 8600GT ECS or a ASUS ATI RADEON HD3650? The price of both is nearly the same, so I'm only talking about performance here. And they are like, noticeably better than my current nVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS, riiiiight?

Can anybody recommend me some good PCI gaming cards? Don't worry about price, I am looking for quality, strong, and possible to play GTA IV on it.

PCI video cards and not PCI-E? There are no good PCI gaming cards I think, the best one I know for PCI is the GeForce 6200, but it isn't a gaming card I think and probably won't be able to play GTA IV.

- Are you sure it is PCI you need and not PCI-E? If it is PCI then you are very limited and it will be pretty low range budget stuff.

- What is the rest of your PC spec?

There we go, then, 8500GT best PCI card you can get.

Sounds good, I don't have any PCI-E slots, so they will have to make do. Thanks guys icon14.gif

Edit: Any one know where I can get them? I all I can find is PCI-E.

I had the same problem. It might be a firewall your using that might block the internet. I know my ZoneAlarm blocked it when I had a power cut a couple months ago, which I'm presuming what made it block the connection. If not, you could ring your internet provider and ask them for help. I had to do this to set my internet back up onto my PC when I got it being as the install disc I got wouldn't work.

I don't think they make them anymore at least not 8800GT the only one I could find was this one. HERE

They also have another one on this site but it's a little pricey for not much gain. I don't know exactly what OS you are going to use this for because from what i have read around different review sites it has problems with Vista and i don't think their's any current drivers for Vista..just a heads up. For Xp it will fit like a glove no problems there.

To be honest if you really need to get it in PCI then get it but if you can save and upgrade your motherboard so that you can get a PCI-e card then you would be better off. You could really get a good board for cheap if you shop around carefully checking out prices thus saving a little bit more for a PCI-e card..just a though, just think about it

Good luck!

Yeah, but I don't know if the CPU can go onto new motherboards, and I am also afraid of it bottle necking to much. Plus I have to worry about the case, and the optical drives, and everything else. To much hassle for me to figure out right now. Thanks for the card suggestion man, although it says 64 bit, while the system will be running 32 bit, will this cause any problems?

No man it's nothing to worry about it's the standard interface of memory on a graphics card for example the cards come in different interfaces 128 bit being the most common they come in 256 bit and such it will not effect the OS in any way it's the speed of the memory chips on the graphics card. Being that it's a PCI that might explain why it's at 64 Bit which still it's twice of the PCI slot on your motherboard.

Another example would be all your add on cards like dial up modems, TV Tuners and USB port add ons. They are all 32 bit but in this case is the way they communicate. On an OS 32 bit refers to the instructions or binary digits the CPU can handle.

Ronny does that board have a AGP slot, If so you are in luck I just found this 'DX10- 8x AGP' card on Newegg and it's the best card for your setup.

Here

I though the AGP interface was dead, I guess they're still making them.

Wow, that is even better. I will probably go with that instead. But at the moment I have the 6200 coming in the mail until I can afford that card. That shall do me well, thanks again!

The Incredible Hulk 2008(SEGA)

Yea! I know I'm such a kid, we'll anyway I installed it and it's buggy as hell It saids that I can use my 360's gamepad but it won't work. Their's no freaking game menu for settings I mean no video settings or gamepad settings WTF: SEGA again, screws me up the yin-yang with no Vaseline. I will never again buy another game for the PC from SEGA first Ironman now this mad.gif

Has anyone gotten their gamepads to work with this game just for the record I also installed their latest patch and gamepad drivers. Gamepad works fine on all other games.

Is there any way I can change the sleep button (orange one) to one that just shuts down? I'm sick of having to click the little arrow and selecting Shut Down.

@pcguytech: The Incredible Hulk is a terrible PC port, I beleive it's ported from the PS2 version of the game instead of the 360 or PS3 version. confused.gif

Argh, my Windows is not in english but you basically go to the Control Panel, then the System and maintenance link, then power options and on the menu on the right there should be "choose the function of the power button" or something like that, then you change it to whatever you want smile.gif

And I hope I got all the names right in english xP

Okay thanks for that, it wasn't exactly where you said (where you said only changes what the power button on the front of my computer does), but I poked around and found it under advanced settings, so thanks. colgate.gif

Is the AMD Sempron a single, or dual core processor?

Ah. I thought it did that. It was under the power plan preferences, right? Meh, I always mix the two of them xP

But I'm glad you found it anyway biggrin.gif

Fozzy Fozborne

@Ronny The Sempron is a single core only product in America. AMD have released a few dual-core Semprons in China, but I don't think anywhere else.

Right, I have a Dell XPS, so my power supply upgrading options are limited. I know for a fact this particular machine will function with a standard ATX power supply, but the connector for the power button is propriety, so I could have a 750w PSU but wouldn't be able to turn on the machine...

Anyway, because Dell only sell up to 425w PSUs (they massively under-rate them but I don't know how much by, so I don't wanna take any chances, also Dell's don't have any 8-pins for PCI-E cards. So, I was thinking of importing this:

https://shop.pcpower.com/products/descripti...Dell/index.html

I know it's pricey, but it's the only way I'd be able to upgrade past an 8800GTX (using an 8800GT right now by the way). So, my question is, would that PSU be able to handle a 9800GX2? I'm quite aware that NVIDIA recommend at least a 580w PSU and the one I linked to only has a 550w peak, but I've been doing some research and even under load the GX2 only uses 310w of power. Now with a Dell 375w PSU I'm doing fine and dandy with a Q6600, 3GB RAM, two hard drives, a couple of nice sized fans and an 8800GT (still stable even when overclocked), so would I be safe with a GX2 + that PSU? I already know it won't cut it for a 4870X2 or GTX 280 which is disappointing so I thought I may as well try the next best thing.

Edit: No it won't, the GX2 needs 40a on the 12v rail, that PSU can only do 35. I f*cking hate Dell. sad.gif I think it's time to back up my hard drives and dump everything into a new case with a new mobo and new PSU.

QUESTION/ADVICE:

My 3 year old Compaq laptop has a problem - it now just randomly turns off without any warning. I don't know what is wrong or what steps I should take to determine what the problem is. The laptop is generally plugged into the wall when the thing just dies(goes black) - so I need some advice from you all on what to do. Thanks

EDIT: THere's another less serious problem, but it's f*cking annoying - the TouchPad on the laptop works OK at times, but then the cursor jumps all over the screen and it quickly becomes unusable. Thus, I have to use a MOUSE all the time. I ran diagnostic and comp says the pad is functioning and fine. I tried to reinstall drivers, but nothings worked

(Does this merit its own topic?)

Is it dirty? Try putting some isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a paper towel, and wiping it down. If dirtiness was the problem, it'll be evident immediately.

I have a simple question:

Sapphire or Powercolour ATI 4870x2? (those are the only two brands that give away Grid for free)

I just saw the performance of these cards, and after playing the X360 at gamestop, I scrapped all my plans to get that console.. My 88GT is gonna be sold pretty soon. can't believe it's almost a year old now. it's been a good year with that card though.

Go with either, I'll be getting two Powercolour 4870x2's because I like the sticker better, I think they're both reference, so go with the one you like better.

Hi, me again

I got a DVI to HDMI cable plugged the DVI into the back of my PC and the HDMI into my HDTV

I set my HDTV to HDMI mode and all that and nothing shows on the screen

All the video tutorials i've watched and all the articals i've read say all I need to do is buy that said cable, and just plug it in but it doesn't freakin' work!

my video card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 if that has anything to do with it, I have no idea.

Help!

I'm thinking of buying a Radeon 4870, but I have heard some people say to me that it overheats and causes a bsod or shuts down the comp. Is that true, or does it not overheat?
