Girish
Hey all, I'm looking at buying a Geforce 8800 GTS, Vista Home Premium and a Gig of ram. Roughly how much will that total? As you can probably tell I don't have a clue with most PC related things, but any estimate on this would be a great help. I can't tell you the estimate, but I can suggest you to go for atleast 2 GB RAM if you are going to get Vista. It'd help a lot.

gtamodder
I have been looking around at video cards, because I'm buying one for my friends birthday, and he wants a decent one, but I found the nVidia Geforce 7900 GTX 512Mb PCI-E Graphics card. I think it is one of the fastest DX9 Cards, would it be worth it to get that one? Edited May 17, 2008 by gtamodder

If you are going to use it in single card configuration, go for X1900 XTX. It beats the 7900 hands down. However, in dual-card SLI mode, the 7900 GTX gives a better performance. Ronnyboy
I have a Vista question. Whats the difference between Vista Basic, Buisness, and Home Premium? Also whats the difference between 32 and 64 bit versions? Also is a ATI Radeon HD 3450 Graphics PCI-E 256 MB graphics card good if I want to run new games with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 CPU @ 2.66GHz 4MB L2 Cache 64-bit Edited May 18, 2008 by Ronnyboy
anus
The difference between the different versions of Vista is just some features that some of the editions have and others don't. Go here to see the differences between the editions. The main difference between 64 bit and 32 bit editions is that the 64 bit editions allow for Windows to detect more than 3 GB of RAM while the 32 bit edition does not (even if you have a 64 bit CPU running a 32 bit edition). The price of the 64 bit versions are higher too. If I had to choose between a 32 bit and 64 bit OS, I'd go with the 64 bit version. But it's entirely up to you . The 3450 is really not a good card for gaming. I recommend going with a 3850/3870 if you want to go with ATI and atleast a 8600GT if going with nVidia (keep in mind though that the 3850/3870s are MUCH better cards than the 8600), but a 8800GT or 9600GT is recommended. Ok, I'll get that card. I wasn't too sure about ATi, I'm not very familar with ATi, only nvidia.
Kewfmwpj
I'm indecisive on what to do, how much bottleneck would I be getting with a 8800GT, 2GB DDR2 with a AMD 3800+? I have two choices of what to do with my PC: Option 1: AMD 6400+, another GB of DDR2 and an 8800GT OR Another GB of RAM and the 8800GT with the vista Premium upgrade. Anyone know the prices I would be looking at for each option? Thanks for this if anyone can help! Edited May 18, 2008 by Moncai
anus
The 3800+ would bottleneck a 8800GT quite a bit, can't provide an exact amount though. Go with the first option, it would give you the best performance, Vista isn't really needed as much as the other components . For prices and an awesome, reliable place to buy goods from (if you're in the US), check Newegg.

Generally it's best to pair sticks of RAM. Whatever RAM you have in your computer now, you'll want to pull it out and replace it with paird 1GB sticks. I was out at Fry's Electronics yesterday and picked up 4gigs (2x2) for a friend and it only cost me (soon to be him, when he pays me!) $89.99. You're probably looking at $350ish for the RAM and the video card. I suggest buying them online as even with shipping, it's usually cheaper than going to a store. I generally only buy from stores when I need something immediately. I don't know what Vista costs because I've never bought and OS.

Not buying them online myself, but have a friend who works with PCs so he will end up buying and installing it for me. Just wondering before I go to pester him if my Motherboard is compatible with a AMD 6400+. Belarc tells me it's "ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2V Rev 1.xx". Thanks for patience with e, I really don't have much of clue!
Otter
Short answer: Yes. In fact, even the newer AM3 CPUS, when they roll out, will be backwards compatible with AM2 mobos like yours.
gtamodder
My Cousin has a Intel Pentium E2140 @ 1.6Ghz, with 2GB DDR2 RAM, And he wants an 8800 GT. Would it be bottlenecked by the CPU, Or should it be ok?
anus
It would probably be bottlenecked by the CPU, you can easily overclock that CPU and get it to a MUCH higher clock as the E2XXX series are known for their awesome overclocking capabilities. Just be sure to have a good cooler for the CPU and you should be fine.

Rebel
Okay well I'm having a problem with Itunes. When I'm playing something and also using FF every time I load a page or go to a different page or anything then it will skip the song I'm currently on for a couple of seconds, was just wondering if theres anything I can do to maybe stop this happening 'cuz its pretty damn annoying. Also I'd use WMP but that always freezes on me.

Were downloading anything from I-tunes, and what are you running (RAM and system wise)

Otter
Ha! No worries! I find the view options in Vista rather poorly handled. Every odd folder I open up is displayed entirely differently... more than a little frustrating.
Democrab
I've made a cooler for my Graphics Card using a old Athlon XP cooler, should I just be able to drill the right holes into the cooler, and use some skewers or something to make sure the weight isn't too much? Or will I need to do more, It has a side mounted fan with the Air being channeled through the heatsink.
anus
@Moncai, That doesn't show the speed of the RAM you have, but anyway, if you're getting two or more sticks of RAM, make sure that they're all the SAME brand and model. So you could either buy another 1GB stick of the same brand and model as the current RAM you have (for 2GB), or you can buy two 1GB sticks and sell your old RAM or something. @gtamodder, The 7900GTX is a pretty good card for gaming, but I highly recommend going atleast for a 8 series card (8600, 8800), with the 9 series out and all. @Joe, Yeah that would be enough, but just make sure the heatsink is placed properly on the GPU. Ok, I have to use it since it has a PCIe to AGP bridge chip, so I have two chips to make sure are covered, I'll do the mod once I get my Thermal Paste...
