Need help with translating San Andreas

I've been working on finnish translation for GTA: San Andreas for about one month now. The american.gxt game subtitles have been translated to about 100+ .txt files. My job is to add them to the game and I use SA GXTEDIT 1.3 for that. I do it the copy and paste way, I also check that the lines are translated correctly so I don't need help with that. The actual problem is now this; I started working on this projecta bout a month ago and then I did something, that I found somewhere and the game did show the "ä" and "ö" letters in game, and they were exactly like that in the gxt file too. Now I moved the folder that contains the gxteditor and the translated gxt file to another disk, and somehow the progmam changed all "ä" letters to "š".

 

For example, here is the original line:

~z~En rakasta sinua enää!

 

And here is after it changed "ä" letters:

~z~En rakasta sinua enšš!

 

The program also changed "ö" letters. Now my problem is how do I get those "ä" letters to show up in game as they are, since they are now only empty spaces. All I need is those two letters "ä" and "ö" to show up in game, since in my language there are no other special letters separating from english letters. If someone can help me or give a link to some page that helps me to solve this problem, it would be very much appreciated. I don't want to throw away over 6000 lines of translation because of this problem. Thanks.

As far as I know, it can be something related to the character set this font supports. Some character sets don't have certain characters, and this GTA font doesn't support [ä] and [ö] (it supports [ï] tho).

 

If it doesn't support this character set, it'll find other characters with the same code of one from the supported one. So you must type in an alternative similar character manually in order to have something at least clear.
