handling.cfg unit and values

Recommended Posts

First of all, want to say that this is a really nice place you have here. Happy to see some GTA forums without "OMG LOLOOL n1ce car sk1n wnat teh same!!1!"

Well... moto_whistle.gif

Would like to play GTA:SA again, but this time with new cars' skins to add this "realistic" touch.

I found some really nice models, but their handling are not always what I was expecting for. So, nothing better than a "do-it-yourself": time to put real manufacturer's data in the game.

But the handling.cfg file is not really clear (at least for me). I'm just turning to you, hopefully to get some help. I could try some in the game, but I don't really want to mess everything.

I searched this forum and "googled" almost everything, but found nothing "valuable". The original handling.cfg file lacks info (as a non-native speaker, got some issues there)

I'm stuck for those categories:

- Turning mass. What does this do?

- Same for Drag. Drag coeff. in the game?

- MassX/Y/Z. Use ingame? And based on which unit?

Submerged Same for here: use and unit?

TracMult/TracLoss/TracBias. Here as well?

Acceleration. Higher is better. But based on what?

Inertia. Influence on acceleration and braking? Unit used?

BrakeBias. What for? Unit?

MaxSteer. If I understand, this is the max. angle possible to make a turn?

Springs/Dampers/HiSpeedDampers. Distance between the wheel and the car itself?

UpperLimit/Lower Limit. Need help on this one.

AntiDive. Not all cars are submarines I guess...

The other categories seems to be clear for me. At least I hope tounge.gif

And while I'm here.. I have two questions (I'm sure that was already posted, but...)

- Some cars are flying or the wheels are lower than the ground. Which variable must be changed?

- I have an issue with a car: the oversteer is just way TOO much. Even for this car. What can I change?

Well, I thank you -those who can answer- for your time and help. If this has already been posted somewhere, I'm sorry and please discard this post (but I would like the links! blush.gif )

That was long! Thank you again !

If you're working with the handling in GTASA, then the recently spruced up GTASA handling definition would be a better guide.

Also relevant:

You might find CFG Studio makes it easier to edit the handling. You could even try out CFG Studio 2 and leave feedback in the CFG Studio Development topic.

For help with a specific setup, post it here and explain the problem. Someone might be able to advise you with it once they see it. Using [code] tags is good etiquette for handling:

BANSHEE	1800	4000	1.3	0	0.06	-0.10	-1	0.78	0.68	0.45	5	280	26	80	R	P	4.5	0.60	0	34	1.05	0.135	5	0.22	-0.08	0.5	0.2	0.15	0	45000	40002004	1204203	1	1	1

To reduce oversteer, you can try reducing the Grip Bias option. A change of -0.05 is pretty extreme for a bias setting, so I'd suggest changing it by -0.02 each time. So if it's current 0.55, try 0.53 instead. If that's not enough, do the same again and again until it's better.

Failing that, try increasing the Grip Loss setting. This will give the car more grip when turning and accelerating. Some settings aren't named very intuitively!

Is that enough links? turn.gif

Thank you again for your links and help.

Now, your website is proudly standing as a favorite! I've been checking it since I got the links from Knowledge Novice. Really great tutorials here. Wonder why Google don't put yours in the first links !.. colgate.gif

(Oh and btw, been using your CFG Studio too, that's a great tool).

And thanks for the oversteer explanation, that's just so boring to see you car make donuts on policemen when you just don't want to do that tounge.gif ...

Now just have to remove the speed limit and the plane speed and altitude cap (and guess what... I saw this on your website too, how cool is that!)

Thank you all (again) for your help and links! (And I hope that future modders would take more time to adjust those settings - turning a nice skin into a "must have" car in GTA:SA! )
