omega_c
Hi! I just got GTAVC and SA in the mail (finally), and I just finished installing VC. The installation went perfectly, with no problems. However, when I doubleclicked the gtavc logo in program files, an error box popped up. It said "Can't find 640x480 video mode". Can anyone help me? My computer is almost new (I've had it for about four months). It's an inspiron e1505 widescreen. I also have an external monitor that I've been using off and on, but it wasn't connected when I installed the game/tried to play it. Can anyone help me? I love this game, and I'd really really like to play it. Thank you!
Justin
Please read the pinned topics. I'd suggest deleting the SET file, but you should have done that already if you'd read the bug list. I'd possibly suggest investing in a new graphics card, but I can't decide whether or not to seeing as you haven't provided a run-down of your system specs... See what I mean? omega_c
Sorry, I checked the recently posted topics, but I forgot to look at the pinned topics. A new graphics card isn't really a good option, as I'm using a laptop. I'll check out the pinned topics. Thank you! EDIT: Is thie what you meant? It seems to be pretty much what my problem is, although I'm a bit wary about deleting stuff. I'll try un-installing ffdshow (I think I have it installed), and I'll post here in a few hours about my status. Thanks for pointing out that topic; I honestly just forgot to check Problem #16There are problems changing the resolution of Vice City; and/or the game crashes upon 'ALT+TAB'ing out back to the desktop. Solution: It should be noted that the resolution can only be changed upon initially running the game (i.e. not after a gameplay has begun). Therefore, quit Vice City. Load it up again, and before anything else is done, simply head to display options and change the resolution. You must select the desired resolution with the directional keys and hit Enter to confirm. Alternatively: Delete the 'gta_vc.set' file. It's located in C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\GTA Vice City User Files. Alternatively: Set the compatibility mode of the executable file to 'Windows 98'. Do so by: right-clicking gta-vc.exe (default: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\gta-vc.exe) -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:', and select 'Windows 98 / Windows Me' from the drop-down menu. Apply, OK. And as pictures speak a thousand words, click here for an 84 kB, 367 x 510 image of the process, care of Fuzzy. Alternatively: QUOTE (NRoNe @ Jun 3 2006, 08:24) But i figured out the problem (sort of) after reading this at the GTA VC support site: "--A third-party feature pack for streaming video files, called "Nimo Codec Pack," has been known to cause a number of different problems when trying to install and run GTA: Vice City. If you do have this installed, we recommend uninstalling the Nimo Codec Pack, then try to install the game." I didnt have this codec pack installed. But it led me to believe that i could have a similar problem. So i unistalled a bunch of codecs i use for my media player (Zoom Player). - ac3filter (0.70b) - Dscaler 5 (0.0.6) - ffdshow (20040801) And it worked. (Altough i didnt take the time to figure out wich one of these caused the problem) UPDATE: •I just did some looking around, and I found that ffdshow is part of the k-lite codec pack, which I don't really want to get rid of. •My GTAVC user files folder is empty •I just changed the compatability settings thing, and I'll say what happened in a new post, once I try it out./LIST] Edited January 24, 2007 by omega_c
Justin
No worries... That problem itself (#16) isn't what you're experiencing. I actually ran a quick search of the this forum for the term "video mode", and found only four or five results. A quick browse through T2 Games was similarly disappointing. I'm afraid this means its unlikely you'll get a solid solution. You shouldn't worry too much about deleting stuff, especially if it's the SET file. If ever the game detects one's missing, it will simply recreate it. This process is what makes deleting the SET file useful - if you've changed your hardware or whatnot since a SET file was created, you often have to nuke it to let the game re-detect your system configuration. omega_c
Ah, that doesn't work either. I tried everything I could think of, just messing with those compatability settings. One thing that changed the problem, but didn't solve it, was running it in 256 colors. I got another error message; "Unhandled Exception" is the title Unhandled exception: c0000005 At address: 00600e40" Help? I love this game, so... any help would be much appreciated! I also have another computer, a desktop, that I haven't tried to install it on yet. However, it was having some problems, and I haven't fixed it yet. I'd love to be able to run it on this computer, but if not, the other one is available. Any ideas/help/solutions are much appreciated! EDIT: I'm off to play San Andreas (well, actually, I'll be right here, but it's full screen ) Please post any ideas! Thx!

However, it was having some problems, and I haven't fixed it yet. That would be a very good idea. If only to test it out and possibly getting it working on at least one of your machines. Most troubleshooting occurs on desktops, so we're in a better position to help any potential problems you may encounter.
omega_c
OK, I'll do that a bit later today; I have to get it up and running. Oh yeah, SA isn't working either... I posted in the SA troubleshooting forums as well.
