8ballsoffire
the more i appreciate music the more i hate guitar solos, there are some fantastic ones out there but then there are millions of wank-fests that do nothing. here's some that i like Hendrix - all along the watchtower. hendrix is one of the few guys who plays electric blues that i can listen to for a long period of time and not get bored with. i'm pretty sure these solos were, like most hendrix solos, improvised on the spot but they just fit in and become a part of the song, that's what a solo should be. Bloc Party - The Prayer. there are quite a few bloc party solos that i could pick but this one's in my head right now. it's really subversive and makes you wonder whether it actually is a guitar, but it totally works with the song and gives it a new life. Beefheart - moonlight on vermont. practically anything from trout mask replica would be perfect study for how to make the blues sound like nothing you've ever heard before. this song has one of the most powerful riffs ever and the "gimme that ole time religion" solo is a piece of magic. take any guitar part from Entertainment! by Gang Of Four, best guitar album ever. No.1 Loonie
Dire Straits-Sultan's of Swing And, even though it's not really a solo... Freebird.
Jack_Knife
The solo in My Lovely Man by the Chili Peppers is one of my favourite Frusciante solos. That song is really awesome overall, but the solo fits just right and f*cking rips. "You can play faster than Al Di Meola and do it with only one pinky, but if you're not listening to what is going on around you, you might as well just shut up" isn't your croth suppose to be erecting when you have an orgasm? Paco
Jimi Hendrix' improvisation that he did at the end of his Woodstock set is probably the most magnificent playing of guitar I'd ever gaze on. I also liked the guitar bit in The Electric Prunes - Kyrie Eleison / Mardi Gras. I second "Maggot Brain" and raise you "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts", "Super Stupid", and "Alice in my Fantasies".
