Woman dies after Wii contest

Recommended Posts

Mother-of-three Jennifer Strange was hoping to win one of Nintendo's next-gen consoles for her children. But the KDND 107.9 radio show contest she took part in had a tragic end when the woman was found dead in her Rancho Cordova, California, home.

Coroner Ed Smith, performing a preliminary investigation, found evidence that was "consistent with a water intoxication death."

The winner of the Wii game console was to be the person who managed to not go to the toilet for the longest amount of time, despite consuming large quantities of water. Contestants had to drink an eight-ounce bottle of water every 15 minutes--one quit after five bottles. In the later stages of the competition, the remaining entrants were given even bigger bottles to drink.

It is not yet clear how much water Ms. Strange consumed. She told a colleague after the contest that she felt sick and had a "really bad" headache. The woman was later found dead in her suburban home. It is not known if Ms. Strange succeeded in winning the console.

A spokesperson for the radio station commented, "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred."

This is what happens when you take Wii jokes too far.

Part of the blame falls on the radio station. They made them drink even BIGGER bottles of water after 15 or so minutes. I doubt the contestants knew they would be drinking so much. I say the blame falls mostly on the radio station for making the conditions so dangerous.

They'll probably sue, I'm sure of it. It's a pain, even though the station made it dangerous, no one forced them to take part in it. Also, they should've quit earlier on.

I heard she got second place in the contest.

And the punchline should be, "Second prize was a case of Bawls."

So absolutely no one, not the contestants, not the radio station DJs, no one though "Wait a minute, not pissing for a really long time after consuming mass amounts of water just may have negative effects on someones body"?

I feel bad for those kids, though. There mom dies and they don't even get the Wii? They should have at least gotten a T-Shirt that read "Rockin' KDND 107.9 KILLED MY MOM!"...

It also depends if they made them sign something stating they are not reliable for anything! Though, if not, I would sue too and get the wii! lol

They must've really wanted it bad.

From what I hear they did know. They mentioned on the show another time when someone died from drinking too much water, and someone even called in and said something about it being possible to die from it. Although I don't think pissing would have necessarily helped. It's not like her bladder exploded.

The station fired like 10 people over this.
