Project gaming cabinet

Recommended Posts

after searching for a decent tv stand/audio rack, i found there were none that suited my needs. there were nice, glass ones, but that left everything out in the open. there were nice cabinet style ones, but airflow? "we don't need no stinkin airflow." i don't understand why furniture manufacturers think that components should either be shown off or choked to death. i really didn't want my components burning up, so here is what i did:

the start, and what it looks like from the outside now:

now, this was an office cabinet, made to hold books and sh*t, but it was a great starting point. the process:

installing a fan in the bottom shelf, it couldn't have turned out better

keeps everything cool, quiet, and most importantly out of the way. (i know, i put the shelves backwards, but i f*cked up on both evenly so its symetrical tounge.gif). i will be sure to get pictures of it when i have everything in.

thoughts? personal tv stands/tv stand mods?

I wish I had that sort of creativity.

Looks very nice. I need to get me a stand. My gaming system, DVD player and a whole mess of wires are on top of a long table in front of my TV, very messy. If I had the tools (and time) I'd probably make something like that.

Cool! What about the fan, is it too loud?

Cause that is one of the main problems I have. I use XBMC on my Xbox to stream my music and videos, but the xbox fan is very loud and sometimes it keeps me from sleeping... sleepy.gif

it does have a low, dull hum, but the xbox 360 outside the cabinet is louder than the cabinet itself. any sort of tv noise or anything completely drowns it out, so unless i have anything muted, i can't hear it

quick mock-up(nothing plugged in).

everything fits nicely, and you can still feel airflow at the exhaust holes even on the lowest fan setting. this cabinet is definately set for summer.

in the interest of cleanliness, once i find my IR repeater, the cable box will be going behind the unit somewhere. as for controllers, the only non-wireless controller i have is the guitar for guitar hero, so i was thinking of simply hanging hooks on the inside of the doors for em. i will be putting my pc behind the unit with just a usb dvd drive/usb hub(it would be great to find a combo) for the image of a fully functional super-small pc with the acutal computer being out of sight, out of mind.

i think i am actually going to take the original x-box out of there, its chipped, but there aren't really any xbox games i don't own that i want to play and aren't back-compat with the 360.

(the second i get a wii, the gamecube goes out the window, the second guitar hero 2 for the 360 comes out, the ps2 goes out the window)

I like having my consoles on display, it says; "Look at me, I'm loaded!"

As for the cupboard, for the amount of work you've done, I think it looks really tacky.

thats not good. the only work it took was 10 minuites with a hole saw, 5 with a jigsaw, and 5 long screws cry.gif

lol. i like how it looks, a lot better than a white wii, white 360, black ps3 and black cable box. down the road i plan on building a entertainment unit, as its kinda hard finding one that supports 2 tvs.

there is also a certain woman in my life who hates gaming. with these out of the way, out of sight, out of mind.

as for the "look at me, i'm loaded" thing, 2 hdtvs does the job nicely

yo SIP YEK NOD can you make me the plans for this

i would like to have something like that

there wasn't/isn't much planning involved, and this cabinet is pretty unique in that the bottom shelf actually comes out and and can be cut without compromizing the integrity. you don't have to be a genius to figure out where air is going to flow if you let it, so it should all come fairly naturally.

I wish I could magically sh*t money like you Sip.

lol, the total cost of this cabinet/mod was 12 bucks for the fan. as for everything in the case, i work 16 hours a day for that fun stuff wink.gif

Yeah, what is it you do and how much do you make!? biggrin.gif

Thats pretty good, but did you interpret putting holes in it for the wires!?

i make maybe 3 grand a mo after tax after all is said and done.

as for holes, the 360 and wii are going to be going into the ss, and i have a long component cable to reach the tv through the hole behind the ss unit which all teh speaker wire will go through. there is already a power ball installed through a hole in the bottom. the only thing going in/out of this cabinet will be: usb cable for computer dvd drive, component from ss unit, speaker wires, the ps3s hdmi cable, and 3 network cables, and there is a hole behind each shelf that can easily handle that.

Ah no more white Xbox, kind of looks tacky because its not shiney! Awesome though

shiny collects dust, see: ps3.

and its actually dyed, so its the strait plastic turned black. the dissapointing thing is it didn't take on the shiny peices of plastic, so the little tab on the battery case for the controller is white again(black permanent marker fixed that), so a dyed black wii is out of the question sad.gif

the black 360, however, is absolutley sweet, but the camera flash make it uber light and highlights white spots.

black + 360 = match made in heaven
