What you said reminds me of the time I was asked by a 'Marxist' at a university here to attend one of their rallies simply because I agreed with him about excessive government control being a bad thing. He asked me to put my number down in his (brand new at the time) iPhone 7, while he was decked out in some designer clothes and Ray Bans.

Are cheap clothing and basic clothes less exploitative than luxury brands? Last time I checked hardware for £20 handsets was made on the same suicide net laden Foxconn factories as £1k iPhones, and cheaper clothing brands were the most extensive users of sweatshops.

So the low end brands that exploit workers in sweatshops and have horrid human rights histories are the ones we are suppose to buy from? The companies who abuse workers in order to make their bottom line margin the same margin as the big brands...we should patronize.

That's really a separate issue, though. Capitalism is capitalism, regardless of the individual profit margin on the item in question.

 

I'm not presuming the intentions of the specific individual, but unless you intend on living in a cave, feeding off moss and hunting wild animals, you have to engage with capitalism in a capitalist society, and choosing particular brands because of, say, their ethical policies despite their headline price tag seems sensible to me, until such a time as the proles rise up and string bankers by their ankles from lampposts.

I think you know exactly what I'm saying trip, and you know that's not what I mean.I think I know what you are getting at. Maybe you just picked a weird analogy or example or whatever. In the capitalist world of retail, most goods operate at the same margin no matter how they get there. A cheaper less than brand item is making up the difference at the register in other ways. Some times those other ways aren't the best.

I do have some favorite clothing brands though, especially when it comes to shoes. I simply feel more confident wearing expensive stuff.

The iPhone X reportedly sold less than half of what Apple was anticipating, so I guess a lot of people don't see the appeal in them and don't want to spend $1000 on an emoji machine.

 

This was basically the only new thing they introduced, and they jacked the price up by a few hundred and figured it'd be a "premium" model. Now I've heard that they're planning on discontinuing it earlier than they typically discontinue most iPhones.

 

Agreed when it comes to clothes and shoes though. I wouldn't pay full price for a lot of stuff, but if the quality is good, then it's always going to be worth getting a better brand (provided that it isn't cheap sh*t or even decent quality stuff that's more expensive than it should be because of the brand name attached to it, All Saints springs to mind as one of those. Love their clothes and it's better quality than similar brands like H&M, but hate the prices with a passion, they're outrageous).
