I think there's a huge difference between someone intentionally ripping off another race and using their entire existence as a gimmick, and someone showing love for a part of someone elses heritage.

I don't give a sh*t about this, but like I said there are real issues in the world, just because someone wants to enjoy something beautiful from another culture doesn't make them a raging racist.. f*ck.

It pisses me off because a girl (not going to say race) commented on my insta saying 'why tf you using thai language on your pic'.

I'm half Thai but I'm pale and have big eyes. I'm pretty sure she thought I was white. She deleted her comment after I told her.

Irritating turds.

I have the urge to get dreads now.

Sharing and enjoying someone's culture should be appreciated by people from that culture. They aren't having dreads to mock the culture.

I swear, people are trying to keep racism alive for as long as possible.

This sort of sh*t can jump off a bridge along with the PC movement.

I am now grumpy from reading that.

You're taking a symbol of minority cultures and used it simply because you think it looks cool. It's colonialist.

Not A Nice Person

Dreadlocks are called Dreadlocks because when Haile Selassie was crowned emperor of Ethiopia, he was forced into exile during an invasion, so guerrilla warriors swore not to cut their hair until the emperor was reinstated. Their dreadlocks were thought to be disgusting and frightening, hence the term 'dread' which was later reclaimed by the rastafians.

calling your hair 'dreads' or 'dreadlocks' or whatever is thorny.

:bored:

Is she serious? I'm done.

Is she lying though?

Doesn't mean someone white can't use it for the same reasons its been used in history - an expression of deep religious or spiritual convictions, ethnic pride or as a political statement.

The symbol of dreadlocks is defiantly not locked to race mate.

Egyptians are the first to be recorded using the dreadlocks. Much more history to them then just minority groups.

Thought Experiment: A white person wears them in a setting where whites are minorities. Would it still be colonialist...or merely assimilation?

You can't pick and choose different cultural items you find and simplify and adopt them for yourself. You're stripping their identity from them.

It does sucks to see respected symbols take on a new shallow meaning. But it's a pretty unavoidable fact of life. It's not worth resisting. At a certain point, it seems odd to endorse a symbol's identity while prohibiting its broader use. Though I disagree with your stance, it's understandable. It's like dipping a chef's $100 masterpiece in ketchup or making a sandwich with it.

The older boojie types at wealthy ski resorts were salty as f*ck when young black drug dealers on the east coast (specifically NYC) started rocking their beloved Timberland boots.

Given that they're revered by certain Hindus, Buddhists and (certainly historically) various Christian sects (in fact that's where the Rastafari movement adopted them from in the first place), the Cultural association with Rastafarians in particular is far from unique.

OMFG Perhaps people of something other than American Or British nationalities should not learn English then, because it isn't of their heritage or their nationality, because of your messed - up logical argument.

Perhaps we shouldn't use Sony's stuff because it's Japanese, or perhaps we should stop eating Thai food because it's from Thailand?

Logic is not a common thing nowadays.

@ Eris - You're right, you can't pick and choose. But if its a culture that has had the dreadlocks originated from, its the Egyptians and slowly been used for different situations, races & cultures over the history of Mankind.

If we are to follow your logic, Rastafarians shouldn't wear them, no?

I'm sorry but this has got to be the stupidest new internet obsession. So the little dork wants to wear dreadlocks. Let him be. There's absolutely nothinhg wrong with that. Period. Anybody who feels otherwise, please crawl back to Tumblr. Because it's about as dumb as saying black women shouldn't straighten their hair.

I believe it a good thing if everyone wants to assimilate cultures. Everyone coming together. I feel this cultural appropriation nonsense is just attempting to segregate people. We all grow hair, we can all have dreadlocks. It's not exclusive to African's. In fact I think it is culturally insensitive to not allow people to do it. It just reminds me of how African Americans weren't allowed to have what white people had going back. Just this time it's a little reversed. Ridiculous.

If I want to get dreadlocks, then half cornrows, wear a turban, get a tribal tattoo on my arm, wear Roman Sandals, smoke Cuban cigars or a Hookah while drinking straight vodka from a beer glass I should be able to.
If Black people, Indians, Islanders, Romans, Cubans, Lebanese, Russians and Australians all get offended. Well too bad, you need to relax. If you like I will give you the privilege of short back and sides and a butterfly tattoo on your ass. You can even shave your chest. All gifts from my culture to you.

lol what are you talking about, dreadlocks derive from many cultures. from hindu to christian to rasta. they are popular because in modern era they are known from the Rasta culture, but they are not labeled to one culture only. By your definition, then black people can't have straight hair, asians can't have curly so on and so on

I brought that up once when explaining the flaws of 'cultural appropriation' involving dreadlocks and their origins and this person proceeded to tell me white/asian/latino/indian people have no right to have dreadlocks because their hair 'isn't made for dreadlocks, it's not coarse'. Somehow that is a reason why other races should be banned from having a hairstyle, because their hair is soft..

That was exactly what they said to me.

I just hope this over the top PC fad dies out because it's just causing so much unnecessary racial tension, that's the last thing we all need right now.

I agree that currently the PC Police are in high gear and overreacting to a lot of stuff, but in general, being PC is just a fancy way of saying "being polite and respectful" and this is something that's a positive. When you make it inappropriate to say that you've been "jewed" in a business deal, or that you "ni**er-rigged" something together or that anything you don't like is "gay" you increase the respect that is being destroyed every time one of those phrases is used, even if it's being used in no malicious way whatsoever. The fact that our language is being purged of hate, however unawares the speaker may be, is something to be commended. Yes, the process needs to be fixed a bit, but it's better than it was when I was a kid even, calling people "fag" and whatnot over and over...

So I read today that Gap apologised for any offence caused due to a "racist advert".

Here it is.

gapkids.jpg

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for calling out companies when they make mistakes. It's particularly satisfying when they try very hard not very hard at all to stay in touch with people to the point that it's obvious decisions were made by a calculator desperately trying to attain sentience. This may be me checking my privilege as a young, white male but I can't see a single thing wrong with this. I'm fed up with things being branded sexist, racist or otherwise offensive when you pretty much have to clutch at straws. I couldn't imagine what it feels like to be so bothered by things all the time. I feel like some of these people wake up, stretch, scratch themselves and wonder what on earth they could be offended at today.

Okay, so the taller girl is resting her arm on the shorter girl's head. The former happens to be white, and the latter happens to be black. Not content with diversity (to some degree, it's not completely all encompassing) by including children of different races in the advert, apparently now resting one's arm on a shorter person's head is somehow oppressive. I went through a bit of a growth spurt when I was 19, so naturally I took advantage of my new found stature by resting my arm on people's heads and asking them how the weather was. One of two them may have been black, perhaps Japanese, I don't know or care. Race had nothing to do with it. Admittedly it's a juvenile thing to do but it isn't racist. I was just a bit of a patronising bully at a push.

Can we stop getting all up in arms about things please? Save your annoyance for companies that legitimately cock up, like setting fire to people in wheelchairs who jailbreak your phone or implying children without fingers can't play Tetris.

I completely agree, I didn't mean for it to sound the way it did.

I should've specified I don't like this 'Tumblr PC'. That's the best term for it. There is positive PC like you said and then there is Tumblr PC which (that's what I was trying to describe above) is just about finding reasons to attack someone and condemn straight/white/men (most of the time it is them that get the worst of it).

I'm particularly butthurt about it because of the countless attacks I've seen/received that are uncalled for and often inaccurate and it is always the kiddies who frequent Tumblr.

(I just want to make it clear I don't for a second think that PC as a whole is a joke, it really is the nutters who take it to the next level).

In all fairness, the picture is a little offensive. Resting your appendages on another persons head is clearly a universal sign of superiority. In historical family portraits, it was common for male children to rest their hands on the female sibling's head for the same reason. Can't really be surprised about the PC sh*t storm here. Even black people would be offended here...and typically, black Americans don't give a sh*t about political correctness.
