Am I wrong in thinking that the progression of thought is the regression of man and his wellbeing?

Lets see. Cavemen. Modern humans. I think it is safe to say that you are wrong.

Are you meaning to tell me everything man has achieved has made our way of life completely better with absolutley no faults?

There are always faults. We have more ways to kill each other now, and unfortunately, we use them. But there are more improvements, and for the most part, we don't have to think about our survival, health, or hunger. Not as much as our distant ancestors did at any rate. We can use that opportunity to better our lives, and that also requires a lot of thought.

Paco... what, exactly, do you mean by progress, or regress, when it comes to man? If it's quality of life, then I'd argue that we're certainly far better off.

Once Man figured out how to make their own fire and got the wheel down, they basically made progress that no other species has ever made in millions and millions of years. Well, on Earth anyway tounge.gif . But, I do see your point Paco, how long will it be before we start getting computers and machines doing everything for us, possibly overthrowing us and taking over the world? wow.gif

Progress has made our lives more convenient, but not necessarily better. We have automobiles, planes, and other means of mass transport and all the toxic air that accomponies it. Single serving bite size everything with an abundance of wrappers and packaging to toss out our windows on our way to the nearest 'convenience store' to buy all the alcohol, tobacco, and chemically sweetened snacks and drinks that our bodies can handle before going into a diabetic, cancerous, Cirrhosis induced coma while we sit idle in front of the TV and stare blankly at monotonous advertisements for more health eroding products. And while some people starve in our own streets, we have the modern convenience of diet pills that allow you to sh*t out 20 lbs 'o lard a week.

Comfortable? Yes. Better? Let's ask that question when we have to arrange our residential areas between the landfills and graveyards that have taken all our elbow room. And what about colonizing the moon or mars? That'll be the logical soloution when we've used up and polluted the earth beyond recovery. But even if they do suceed in colonizing another planet, do you think your gonna be near the top of the list of new tenants? I figure the heads of all these multi-million dollar corporations that soothingly pat us on the back as we gulp down their products are gonna have dibs on ridding shotgun on the next shuttle to tomorrow. I mean, it's not really in most people's budget to go to Disney World, how the hell are they gonna get to the moon; stick out their thumb and hope for the best? We're progressing to a pampered and complacent demise. But while we're on the subject, somebody pass the Oreos. I need a couple to finish off my imitation chocolate drink. God bless modern convenience. See you guys on the moon. sly.gif

hmm, made me think~

does man ever know when to be content?

his strive to continue towards progress leads to the regression of his fellow man (countries ala 3rd world being left behind)

tho I'm seeing man's will to progress as a ball, it moves forward and it hits a wall, and it moves backward undoing it's own progress...

it's like having irrational Neanderthals who know how to use a gun (or nukes)

technology has indeed made life easier, but in turn it has made us lazier and in some cases dumber~

I dunno, in thinking how to reply to this topic I'm starting to fail understanding what I just typed... regress?

We just need to make sure, when designing super smart AIs, that machines think that human babies are cute. Then, if they take over, they might at least keep us as pets.

Anyways, the whole debate is stupid. None of us would be around today without technology. Not a single one. Period. So would you rather live as you live now, or not live at all? That's the whole question.

Anyways, the whole debate is stupid. None of us would be around today without technology. Not a single one. Period.

I can respect other people's opinions, even if I don't completely agree with them. After all, aren't there places in the world today where people have never had access to vaccines much less the convenience of stopping off at the super market to pick something up for dinner? Instead they use what they find in nature to cure their illnesses and stalk their meals with clubs and spears. We have conveniences, but not everything that we do is out of necessity.

So would you rather live as you live now, or not live at all? That's the whole question.
And I can't help but feel that you're throwing away all the details as if this were a 'Would you rather be complacent and polluted or just dead' conversation. If that were the real topic here there wouldn't be much room for discussion. Some of us may seem a bit pessimistic, in your opinion, but this topic caught my eye because it leaves the discussion open for debate, not just to answer 'complacence or death'.

Are you meaning to tell me everything man has achieved has made our way of life completely better with absolutley no faults?
To me this was the 'whole question' or at least a good clue as to what Paco (the topic starter) had in mind when he started this topic. And even if it wasn't his originaly intended guideline for the discussion, it would have been something else. Either way we've gathered here to discuss the things that stumble through our minds no matter how 'stupid' they may seem to those who read them. If you grow tired of our ramblings then I'm sure there is probably another topic here somewhere that would be more fitting for your lack of desire to discuss things too deeply. As for me I see this as more of an essay than a straight forward multiple choice topic. Isn't there something that you think man could improve on? You don't have to attack our human flaws I you don't want to, but don't become agitated that the rest of us don't see fit to embrace them either. The AI's keeping us for pets was funny though. wink.gif Happy thoughts guys. Happy thoughts. barf8bd.gif

I agree completely! Finally someone who understands the world like I do! A smart person amongst all the rabble! Oh life, who would have thought that perfection could be found amongst the internets! (usage as by president!)

I personally think I agree completely that not only are people heading to appocalypse, but that humanity genuinely wants to head there because we are so tired of life, it´s just not cutting it for us anymore - rather than simply commit suicide individually which would leave inevitably some humans alive humanity prefers to destroy the entire world if not the universe in order so that no life may live.

I hope this serves as part of the discussion/debate. I am genuinely interested in everyone´s opinion. Everybody should have an opinion. It is part of your duty as humanity.

So the human race is collectively a giant masochist? It's a creative theory you have, but I personally don't think humanity is headed for acopolypse, at least in the remotely foreseeable future.

In my opinion, the world has become the polluted, violent turd that it is because people have been to successful at defying natural selection and have overpopulated the planet. We devouring are resources far too quickly for our species to continue expanding. Eventually there will probably be a pandemic or nuclear war that will ravage much, maybe most, of the human population and leave the remaining people to rebiuld their civilization, sort of like what the Plague did to Europe in the 1300s.

IMO, human civilization is doomed to continue an everlasting cycle in which it is destroyed and rebuilt over and over again until another creature manages to evolve and supercede them and become the dominant species.

A suicidal man is not a masochist. Neither is the suicidal human race collectively a giant masochist according to the theory I put forth above.

I agree with you though, your theory seems correct. There are indeed cycles, empire growth, empire fall, species growth, species extinction.

I wonder how free will fares inside the big world of empires and spiecies.

You ever see that movie about the dogs, from the point of view that the dogs ruled humanity?

What is the deciding factor to see what is dominant?

What is the deciding factor to see what is dominant?

I'm not even sure there's a clear-cut answer to that, though you may have meant that as retorical. But, it may all depend on how you interpret domination. Who's to say that birds aren't dominant? I mean, they've managed to obtain flight years before humans. One day they could even off the wall and attack the human race, like in the novel "The Birds" I think it's called.

agreed, and they say that cockroaches will probably survive in a nuclear holocaust, - they would become the dominant species? strange idea

I believe that book was made into a movie by Hitchcock.

At the rate that we're polluting the earth and sea how do we know that we're not going cause the rise of some monstrous amphibian from the depths of the ocean. Farfetched? Yeah. Impossible? I don't know. Have you seen the pictures of some of the things dwelling in the deep? If fossils are any proof then at one time giant lizards roamed the earth, stalked and ate any and everything that caught their eye. Who's to say that to this day something isn't still down there? A gigantic leviathan rising up from the waves in search for a cleaner environment and a new food source would kinda tip the scales against us (scales, leviathan - ha ha cry.gif ).

How do we know that we are the dominant species instead of the main carnivore currently on land? We don't even have equipment capable of reaching down far enough to say that we have even checked for another species that could rival us for dominancy. Sounds like something from a sci-fi flick, but have you ever really stopped to think about it? OR maybe I've seen too many movies. I'm through. Later guys.

That'll be the logical soloution when we've used up and polluted the earth beyond recovery.

That will never ever. ever. ever happen! You overestimate your fellow mans power over this planets life happy.gif
