Raindancer
for christmas, my girlfreind brought me a 32" HD Ready LCD TV. And on the same day i managed to brake my scart connection between the TV and the PS2. I stuck in my old S-Video lead, but the quality is pretty bad. my two questions are: (1) What gives better quality pictures? Scart? S-Video? (2) Do LCD TV's make PS2's look better than a standard telly?
matthew1g
I dunno about question number one... 2.The colour could be crispier but Since PS2 is not in HD, it won't really make a big difference than normal tvs

I wonder if its because the TV is showing up how crap the graphics really are on the PS2. (I was playing conflict: Global Terror & NFS2 Or its the S-Video lead. jarjar
I just got an LCD TV the other day funnily enough. To be honest, I haven't noticed much of a change in the quality, if anything it's darker, which can be annoying at times. The size is better, but stretching out games can make the quality bad too. Depends on the size and quality of the LCD to begin with I think. As for the first question, sorry, can't help .
kingvercetti
A HDTV might naturally blow the PS2 picture up to at least 720p which would make it look like a bad JPEG sort of, same thing happens with an SDTV broadcast viewed on HDTV. Wasn't there once a HD composite cable released for PS2 or am I just imagining? If there was one, try finding one, if not, then sorry.

Yes there is. There was a review somewhere on ign. They said it was very bad and made games look crappier Edited December 28, 2006 by matthew1g
jarjar
Well yes, it's blowing the games up over the normal expected resolution, but that doesn't always mean there gonna be like a bad quality JPEG either. Some games (some newer ones) are made for it. The thing we also have to remember is earlier games we're made for this size screen, also, the screen on LCD's is like a mat (kinda). It's not like Plasmas where the clear on the screen, so the picture is naturally not gonna be great to start with.
GTA3Freak-2001
If your TV has a VGA input then you should look at buying a VGA Cable for PS2, I am fairly sure you can get ones for all of the non-hd consoles. Then there's also component which is the same deal, you just need to find a PS2 cable that has it.
AlianAnt
I'm not sure what gives better quality, but one of the reasons it could look bad is, like has been said before, the TV blows up the image from 480p (standard definition) to whatever definition you TV is. I know Guitar Hero 2 and such looks like GARBAGE on my dad's 1080i TV. You also mentiond that the picture feels worse too. Does the picture seem to lag slightly when you move/push a control? Again, on my dad's TV, theres a lag while the TV 'up-scales' the image to 1080i causing a lag in my controls. In short, it might just be a better idea of have your PS2 hooked up to a SDTV and if you have a 360/PS3, hook those up to the HDTV. Metal up your ass! Cran.
1) SCART; if it's using RGB/Component cables. If it's still using composite, it's going to be worse than S-Video. S-Video > Composite (Yellow, White, red cables) 2) Depends on the cables. If you are using the HD cables/better cables for the LCD, yes it'll look better on the LCD. If you use the old cables it'll look like crap on any HD TV (Well, it'll look worse, much worse), because the image has to be streched so much. It'll look much clearer on a smaller, SDTV mainly because; It'll be running at the displays native (highest) resolution, so it'll be clearer and because the screen is smaller, you won't notice the artifacts and compression that comes with component cables and other non HD cables. Have you ever got a crappy 72 DPI jpeg image and made it bigger in photoshop or something? Notice all the compression from making it bigger? The same principle applies here. So long story short, it'll look worse because the HDTV has to upscale an image that is much smaller (When you have a SD source). 720x576 (PAL) to something like 1366x768 or 1920x1080 depending on your TV. @AlianAnt sounds like a dodgy TV to me If you ask me if I want to put my Xbox on my 27" CRT SDTV or my 50" HD Plasma, i'd take the plasma everytime @jarjar yes, some games on the last gen consoles can support HD modes (For exmaple, Forza supports 480p) but this is only providing you have the HD cables to transmit the image. If you are using SD cables (composite etc) the image will always have that bad JPEG compression effect. BTW jarjar, just wait until you get see a HD version of free to air channels. It looks simply breathtaking on any HD capable screen. I bet you parents only got a LCD TV with a analogue tuner It's a rip, your not taking full advantage of the screen. The news about the new HD channels has been around for awhile, and we wanna get in on the action too. Hopefully they did get one with the HD support. It was a bargain actually the LCD actually, 800 bucks on Boxing Day at BigW. EDIT: Just checked, yep, it has HD support, phew! Thanks for the heads up mate . I'm lost. I've been using the HD channels on my TV for ages! You can have HD support, but you can't use 'em if you don't have a Digital tuner. Raindancer
I just picked up a component video cable from GAME, the guy says its the best cable for use on LCD TV's (My TV is 1366x768) Will give that a try. But yes it does stretch the picture abit. I think i got options on my telly, to scale down the size. will also try that later. In regards to TV Channels. I have to subscribe to my cable providers HD package which at the moment only has BBC4 in HD. Watching normal telly, looks fantastic, cannot wait to see a true HD show. My TV specs if you are interested. - HD ready (720p and 1080i supported) (Xbox HD Ready) - 32inch LCD Display Panel - 1366x768 Screen Resolution - 500cd/m2 Brightness - 1200:1 Contrast Ratio - Progressive Scan - 176 / 176 degrees viewing angle - Built In Stereo Speakers - 1000 Page Teletext - 1 x RF Input - 1 x HDMI Connection - 2 x Scart Connection - 1 x AV In / Out - 1 x S-Video In - 1 x VGA In - 1 x Audio Output - 1 x Headphones Connection
*gta star*
You can actually buy an adapter for Xbox and PS2, it's got two connections on it. This would be very useful if you had an old tele. Just plug that into the back of your television mate.
