Soup182
Hey, I always understood that in the intro scene of GTA III, when Claude gets shot, he got shot in the neck. Thats why he didn't talk. Thats what I always thought... Is there any sence in this?
saintdave
It’s certainly plausible, but if that was the case why didn’t he try and convince Catalina not to shoot him when she was aiming at him? Personally I think Claude can talk but he prefers his actions to do his speaking. Not only that but having a character to control that didn’t talk seemed to involve the player more in a way that you almost felt you were the main character exploring this vast city. Greene
But you're forgetting, Claude didn't talk 9 years before in SA. I think he's just a mute character simple as that. If he ever returns, I doubt he'll be talking.
Canoxa
He seems mute in San Andreas, so I'll still go by that. And some growls or sounds are by instinct. Wouldn't Claude release some sounds after getting shot or falling off big heights?
jarjar
It's odd, there is no real reason, whether it be that Rockstar just didn't bother, or these is a big conspiracy behind it is debatable. At the end of the day all we know for certain is he can't talk. And Rockstar wanted to keep it that way in San Andreas too, the reason why? Who knows. Ben
Wouldn't Claude release some sounds after getting shot or falling off big heights? He does. He groans/moans/sighs, etc., (whatever you want to call it) when he falls from heights. And perhaps also when he gets shot (I can't remember exactly whether this bit is true or not though). His "pain noises" are in the SFX though.
super_slav
I know why Claud does not talk. If you have played GTA San Andreas in the mission called Farewell My Love... when Claud apeers for a brief moment CJ Says something like "you toungless freak or something like that I cant remember much realy it was a long time ago. MMFF
Yeah, I believe it was "You snake without a tounge!" and ""mute f*ck!" That would lead me to believe that Rockstar is saying that Claude is mute. You could make the argument that CJ was saying that because he was pissed and that he didn't really know if he was or wasn't mute. But it is a video game and I think Rockstar had him say that because he really is.
unopescio
The only word he ever says is "DEAD!" in the intro scene to GTA2.
Moogle7
No the real reason is because Rockstar wanted to make it as if "you" were the main character. He didn't have much of a personality and therefore it is easy to put us into the main character. And then in VC they decided they'd give him a personality. And now when Claude comes back in SA, they are trying to cover it up, or give a reason in game logic terms.

Also what makes you so sure you have the definite reason for this...!?
Pat
Acctually, it's when you start the first mission at your garage in SF that he says that. You go inside and see that it's sh*t, and CJ says "THAT MUTE ASSHOLE!". He walks around a little, then says "THAT SNAKE WITHOUT A TOUNGE!". Then he just yells/screams/ect. Still, that was a good find. About him possibly getting shot in the throat, I mean. But, like that guy said that thought Claude was in VC, apparently R* wanted you to be the main character. They wanted Claude to be you. I could dig up a link, but I'm too lazy. Happy newyears!

I said the Main Character in Vice City can talk, got it??
Pat
Well, since this topic is about Claude.. we figured you meant Claude. Don't take it so offensively. You should've said Tommy instead of "him".
Blackadder.
Maybe he doesn't speak because R* didn't want to spend money on a voice actor?
fareed
Maybe claude just doesnt likes to speak, can be his nature.
Soup182
Ahh, i did some research and I found out that R* planned for you to name Claude, but they scrapped it. They just made him a namless character
No One At All
Hey, I always understood that in the intro scene of GTA III, when Claude gets shot, he got shot in the neck. Thats why he didn't talk. Thats what I always thought... Is there any sence in this? Did you ever play san andreas? If you listen close enough after cj wins the race and gets his garage he says The Dam Snake Without A Tongue I think that maybe claude has no tongue, maybe there are some more details about it in GTA2&1, you can download those games free somewhere..... Mister Zero
I always took it for granted that he didn't speak, and as a result it allowed me to think what I wanted about my boss or allies without Claude talking for me. I was able to form my own opinions through playing because of him being mute.
Raymond Luxury-Yacht
I had read an old interview with the members of DMA Design (that is, the development house that was bought by R* to become R* North) which corroborates Moogle7's point. They even considered allowing players to enter a name for the character in the beginning of the name, which option was later dropped out. This explains why he doesn't have a real name in the game. And let's not forget that III and even VC, (with its highly articulate protagonist with a distinct personality) allow custom skins. Only by the time of SA did R* North decide to use a 100% 'given' player character. Characters can always be ret-conned of course, hence alternative histories emerged as the 'gta universe' solidified into the coherent whole we know today. The 'generic' GTA III player character now has a name, and the lack of speech too has an anatomical explanation.
Claude GTA3
Claude is not mute, just doesn't talk, because mute people cannot let a sound out...and Claude lets out slight groan when he is hit
Fubu
There is no voiceactor by Claude. He is a mysterious man, who's just thuggin' around. Claude is a french name. Maybe he doesn't talk because he's french.

Pranjal
When GTA3 came about in 2001, Rockstar had no plans to assign a separate voice actor to the main protagonist. As the game evolved, the character was also simultaneously developed to give the game more vibrancy.
12Gauge
Uhh. So how come everyone in GTA3 calls "Claude" Tommy Vercetti. And if his name isnt TOMMY in gta3 and its claude or "fido" how come the character in VC looks almost EXACTLY like "Claude" in GTA3? this always confused me
