San Andreas Nut
Ok, well Im looking at buying my first car soon & was wondering what you guys would recommend. I would love an automatic car with manual mode like my Dads Mazda SP23, but I think they only do this on newer more expensive cars. I went for a drive in my Mum's green Gaywoo Lanos today & found it pridy easy for the first time, manual of course. so basically my needs and restrictions: - Manual over auto I guess, I wanna have some well timed fun if you know what I mean - umm Im not sure how much my parents will pay of it yet, but lets say $10k or less. - Needs to look decent & I dont mean in the ric00rR big sh*t lookin bodykits etc. All I will be putting on are some nice rims. I was thinking a Silvia or an older BMW, I am 16 & like many other boys at my age I am interested in Drift. I am by no means an idiot driver I respect other motorists & wont be acting like a dick on the roads, I am mainly talking about track drift and country roads late at night. this will all be done further in my life of course not on my L's lol. I drive around on my friends farms a lot & really enjoy it, I have a love for cars , love watching Top Gear etc. man that show is awesome. thanks to all that contribute. San Andreas Nut
@silvermanblue: umm yeah I really want a Ford Falcon, not sure about the commodores, but they are pridy expensive, the old muscle cars would be very expensive also seeing as they dont make them anymore. @GTA3Rockstar: oh yeah forgot about them, they are nice, dunno if I could afford a decent one thogh. -slash
As an S13 Silvia owner I can tell you if you find one in good order (and you'll be able to get a very nice one for 10 large) you won't be disappointed. Try and find one with the SR20DE motor if you don't want a turbo, otherwise you'll want the SR20DET. Both of those are 2.0L, 1998cc motors. I personally have the CA18DE, which is a non turbo 1.8L, and it's a good engine too. So yeah, try and find one that hasn't been flogged. Be careful of a too good to be true price on a Silvia with low ks, because it probably is too good. A lot of importers have been winding back clocks a click or two. Mine is still in very good working order with 200,000 ks on the clock, the only things I've had to fix have been the alternator and cat converter. There's very good aftermarket support for the SR20 too, which was used right through to the S15 Silvia, (You'd know it as a 200SX, as with the S14) so if you want to give it a bit of the juicy stuff then there's that option in the future. EvilPenguin
As far as old Bimmer's go, you'd be searching in the E30 - E36 range. If you're into drifting, or any other type of motorsport, make sure you get an LSD. Non M3 E36 bimmers will not have LSD's (except for maybe an is) so that would be an aftermarket addition. -slash
s14 ftw! S14s are nice, but they're still a bit pricey for his price range. (Around 15 large these parts)
EvilPenguin
Old Bimmers are great cars - incredible drivers cars with unbelievable performance potential. As long as you promise to take care of it. There are only so many of these cars so don't f*ck it up if you do get one.
Gouveia
IMO, you could buy a muscle car... They accelerate in a fast rate and it has a good handling and top speed + it's cheap(depending on the car). But if you can afford, I suggest you a '95 Mitsubishi Eclipse. They're awesome for anything...

They're awesome for anything... Not true. DSM's have notoriously poor reliability and sh*tbox transmissions. If you were to get any Eclipse, a late model GSX (turbocharged w/ AWD) would be the only acceptable choice. If you wanted to keep your balls, that is. Once again, E30 BMW's have an intelligent and established aftermarket community. They are helpful and extremely knowledgable. r3vlimited.com for E30 wonders. PS. What was that about muscle cars handling well? Accelerating quickly? Doing anything good other attracting mad p00ntang and sound awesome? I have a muscle car, I should know. tuff_luv_capo
S13, but only with SR20 turbo 300zx but only TT Rx-7, again turbo Early 90's supra, turbo... getting a pattern here.
Mega
Basically, insurance is also important. I don't know how it works in AU but seems like Cran's brother can assume easily a 944. But watch out on this. Also think reliability, i.e. i bet you won't be getting serviced at dealers. It implies if the parts are easy to find. If the insurance does not create problems an RPS13 seems to be a good idea for a beginner. If you can afford a tad more expensive servicing go for a 318i in coupé, the E36. And learn to drive properly before drifting or such or you will kill yourself, so like try to learn for 2 years before commiting anything stupid. Both S13 and E36 are very good RWD teachers Signature soon.

-slash
S13, but only with SR20 turbo Yeah, but the CA18DET is also a solid engine and worth looking at. 'course with the SR20 you get a more modern motor with more aftermarket support.
Jay
Basically, insurance is also important. I don't know how it works in AU but seems like Cran's brother can assume easily a 944. Haha that's misleading. Australia isn't as bad as some countries, but you still get jewed right in the belly with most insurance companies. Basically, if you crash and write off your car and someone elses, to expect anything resembling enough money to get a new car for yourself as well as the other person with most policies available to younguns is ridiculous. If you are under 25, insurers work against you. Some people can spend more on insurance each year than the value of their car. For something comprehensive that is. The criteria for assessing cars here is crap. Anything resembling a spoiler instantly classifies as a 'sports car', regardless of what is under the hood. I got off because the strip on the back of my car doesn't actually produce downforce, at least that is what I got my dad to argue it down from. So in short, you buy something with a spoiler, any form of modification and a motor which has cylinders larger than soda cans, you'll get jewed from here to next week. And anything with a sound system (mine included) is uninsurable from many places, such as RAA where my aunt works. Yet still, I pay 2k per year. That being said, you have the cash, you get the car. If you want to go through the squeezing of blood from places like Just Car if you crash then do so. Inbred seems to be enjoying his car, there is nothing saying you cant have a similar experience. Nee-sahns are kickass.
Mega
I see the insurance thingy. Then, go for a E36 sedan, if the coupé was sold as a 318iS then you're f*cked Anyways don't go too powerful, for something you won't be able to handle Signature soon. Jay
I see the insurance thingy. Then, go for a E36 sedan, if the coupé was sold as a 318iS then you're f*cked My friend picked up his 318is for 13k, but his insurance is blanketed under his parent's policy because they are secondary drivers. That being said, he wipes his ass with 100 dollar bills, so I don't think he cares that much.

epoxi
I would say stick with an old BMW or Mercedes: they are reliable, cool and have nice low insurance costs. Custom wheels would look neater on a luxury car if that's the only modification you're planning on making.
streetfire
This may be a little too late, but get an LH-LX Torana, they are cheap, they are muscle cars, they're light (good handling) and go f*ck*n nuts in a straight line. Grab an SLR/5000 kit for it, they look horn.
