Simon.
I think digg is a fantastic idea. If you're unfamiliar with digg there's a feature in which you can rate comments. With the new forums maybe posts should be rated (negative or positive) instead of the topic in general and then the average post rating in the topic could be the topics overall rating. This will allow for more detailed ratings and also for new members to know if their posts are good or bad and to hopefully put them inline. Maybe the rating of the first post can determine the rating of the topic as it is now. You could also have extra profile stats that determine average post quality and things like "Karma" could be determined based upon you getting a +95% rating. I do suppose this is like a reputation system (if implemented in profile), but it works differently and actually concerns your posts rather than a vote on the users profile. The downside I can see from this is it may take a load on the servers diskspace and make things take longer to load. But if I'm remembering correctly, the new forums should be faster and this could be optimized so it's faster.. EDIT: Another idea could be the ability to sort recent topics by popularity. Svip
Digg sucks. End of story. We don't need that crap. So I turn your suggestion down. If you need me to give a reason? Simple: All the stories on the front page is what is approved by users, and usually users are unreliable. Lastly, even though these forums doesn't have the largest mysql database known, it still runs on "older" hardware, and it would very much like less abuse. And I cannot really see any reason whatsoever, why we should at all. Why it would make this board a better place.
tuareg
for new members to know if their posts are good or bad and to hopefully put them inline. Thats pretty naiv. No hard feelings or anything, but do you really think that new members who post around bumpasaurus picks in every topic just for the sake of idiocy, would care about that? Hell no! Simon.
If you need me to give a reason? Simple: All the stories on the front page is what is approved by users, and usually users are unreliable. I'm speaking about the rating aspect of digg where you're able to rate comments. It's probably on many other sites, but I happened to remember digg as an example. I am NOT speaking about bumping topics that are popular to the GTAForums front page or to the top of the category. What I AM speaking about is if people got good ratings on posts then maybe members would try and post posts that members like and find helpful; newer members could then take a look at an older members post ratings and find out what kind of member is a good example. tuareg: When I say new members, I'm generally talking about people who are actually new and have never experienced an online community and are here for GTA and the community that's here. Of course not all new members need to be put "inline" as I said it, some are just naturally good at posting.
Kaj.
Look, Simon., although you may think this is a great idea that would benefit the forums, it really wouldn't. Like oh-so-many similar suggestions before, all it would do is attract abusers. Say there was a gang that didn't like a certain member, they could all vote down that members posts, which in turn would f*ck over that members 'rating' thing you were talking about. If were ever need a hack that allows interactivity between users and crap like that, it'd be a button for mods that allows them to physically put their foot through the intarweb and shove it up stupid member's asses. kthnx. Canoxa
You could also have extra profile stats that determine average post quality and things like "Karma" could be determined based upon you getting a +95% rating. Yo do realize that would be way too much abused and totally rigged in most cases, don't you?
Justin
While I don't necessarily disagree with all the arguments presented against the suggestion (although the hostility might be a bit much)... Surely they all apply to topic ratings as well? Abuse? Gangs? Unreliability since the power is with the people? I say death to topic ratings in any shape or form.
