Heihachi_73
I've always wondered what they actually meant in most of the code talk. Say, you grab a cop car, that usually warrants about 3 or 4 different things. e.g. the female announcer usually says something like 10-71, 10-29, 10-80, one after another. I tried the search function but gave up with too many results. Google didn't do much better. Maybe the information is classified police talk not available to the public. I gather a 10-73 is a hit and run as it always happens after running over someone. In Need For Speed: Most Wanted it's also there when you hit a car. brucewayne909
Cops have to memorize all this stuff? Why can't they just say it?
Heihachi_73
Great stuff there Solo! I guess it's easier to say 10-4 than Affirmative (well, OK is the same!). A few are missing from the list but they generally happen by themselves in GTA so you can tell what they might be.
solo
I noticed there were a few missing, but that could be in case they need to add new ones. or maybe not.
All-Blacks
Cops have to memorize all this stuff? Why can't they just say it? Lol thats what I thought. English was made for a reason, whats the point of making a new complicated, pointless way of communication? Maybe this is why the police barely turns up quick enough, takes 'em time to figure it out in their book 'Police for Dummies' .
saintmarksman
the point of making a new, complicated way of communication is so that criminals can't listen with a police scanner to see if anyone's called the cops and what the cops are being called for. if you were a police officer would you want people to listen in and know exactly what you're doing and where you are? rav0
Police have no worry about people listening to their communications (except maybe annoying gossip queens who like to stand nearby looking busy and eavesdrop). The codes are because radio is unreliable (bad reception, range, interference, sound noise near the operator, etc), and an dropped word from a sentence can end up wrecking a message, possible undectedly. The codes are more error-resilient. Something strange I've noticed about the codes posted here is that thay use the numbers 20, 30, 40, etc. Unless these are read differently, "twenty-five" transmitted on the radio, but with the "-five" dropped (eg because of interference) ends up being the same as just "twenty", and the wrong message is transferred. That's why nine is niner and true bearings are always three digit (eight degrees east of north is zero-zero-eight). Mr.Brownstone
I used to be in Ary cadets and all, and they have this way of pronoucing the numbers a bit differently. like 5 would be fife, 9 = niner, and so on. Its just to make things clearer like the previous poster said. It reall helps out alot. and sometimes poeple might misinterpret some words. PHRobertson
I used to be in Ary cadets and all, and they have this way of pronoucing the numbers a bit differently. like 5 would be fife, 9 = niner, and so on. Its just to make things clearer like the previous poster said. It reall helps out alot. and sometimes poeple might misinterpret some words. That's also the reason for the phonetic alphabet ("Alpha", "Beta", "Charlie", "Delta", "Echo", "Foxtrot" etc). Also, you should really say "Affirm" rather than "Affirmative", as it can also be confused with "Negative" on a bad signal. Oh, and never, and I mean NEVER, say "Over and Out." "Over" means you are waiting for a response. "Out" means you don't want/need a response and the exchange is over. Thus "Over and Out" is a contradiction of itself. It amazing what you learn from being in the Red Cross, isn't it?

Dingleman
Police Codes used in GTA III: 10-09 Repeat 10-11 Dispatching Too Rapidly 10-29 Stolen Or Wanted Check 10-48 Unattended Death 10-50 Cruiser In Accident 10-55 Vehicle Accident 10-65 Boating Accident 10-73 Trouble At Station 10-74 Officer Needs Assistance 10-80 Business/Residence Alarm 10-81 Back In Town 10-92 Need Radio Technician I think the developers just threw in some random numbers in the audio files, and didn't really consider what they meant.
