The Departed (2006)

"You've accused me of being a rat twice now, and if you do it again I swear I'll put a god-damn f*cking bullet in your head no matter who you are."

Scorsese's best? Second, after Goodfellas.

Martin Scorsese is quite possibly the greatest director of the 'crime drama' or 'gangster' films that Hollywood has ever produced. Gangs of New York, Casino and Goodfellas, just to name a few of the excellent films he has directed and 'The Departed' is no different. Superbly written, brilliantly acted and a flowing story that is mesmerising. Typical Scorsese some will say.

Leonardo Di Caprio (Billy Costigan) and Matt Damon (Colin Sullivan), find themselves on the other side of the fence as one infiltrates the Boston State Police and the other the Irish Mafia, but as the discovery of 'rats' within both organisations arises, everybody becomes a suspect, especially those that are guilty. While Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) and Oliver Queenan (Martin Sheen) play the men at war from the different sides of the law.

First off the bat, William Monahan's writing is next to nothing, but brilliance. The slick dialogue combined with Scorsese's stylistic direction makes this film what it is. From the aggressive nature of Detective Dignam (Wahlberg) to the father-like, old-school Police Commissioner Oliver Queenan (Martin Sheen), Monahan has the dialogue down to a tee, while Scorsese's introduction of simple cinematography allows the other techniques to take centre stage. Scorsese uses lightning particularly well in 'Departed', just like in Casino, as the darkness represents the unknown, danger, the aggression, the light shows reality in its bleakest form. Every piece of music in the film, also compliments the film very well such as 'Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb' being played lightly over a scene that contains both sex and adultery.

However the real brilliance is in the cast, Nicholson, Sheen, Di Caprio, Wahlberg, Damon, Baldwin, Winstone and Dalton and nobody let's the film down. Leonardo Di Caprio (William Costigan) is particularly stunning playing a tough-guy gangster that must hide his past or face the darkest of punishments, death. Matt Damon (Colin Sullivan), on the other hand is less convincing than Leonardo Di Caprio, but his performance still doesn't let up, as his role switches quite instantly from the 'collaring-result-delivering protagonist' to the bad-guy mob man on the inside. While Martin Sheen (Queenan) and Mark Wahlberg (Detective Dignam) play there supporting roles, countering-acting 'good-cop bad-cop' exceptionally well. Nicholson (Frank Costello) played the role of the tough-guy gangster quite well, but his character was missing substance and felt a bit two-dimensional, but apart from that, the acting, just like the cast, was superb.

Scorsese is quite simply the master of the Gangster genre and while some may say 'it's been done before' it feels so fresh and new to a period of cinema full of horror, thriller and romantic comedies. If this film does not get nominated for an Oscar, Leonardo Di Caprio should be instead for his best role since 'The Aviator' (which was directed by Martin Scorsese as well.)

If you’re a Scorsese fan you will love all two hours and thirty-six minutes of this. If your not, you will still very much enjoy it.

just got back from it, f*ckING AMAZING.

only downside was their bullsh*t boston accents, but anyone who isn't from boston won't even notice.

Just saw it, excellent movie. Great acting all around, even from DiCaprio, whom I normally can't stand. Nicholson definitely stole the show though. Some good violence, especially towards the end.

9/10, minus 1 point for the weak romance subplot.

ah the next scorsese movie, ive been hearing good reviews all around and I've been urging to see it. I've seen the original infernal affairs like 3 yrs ago it was good, Scorsese definetly made his own version of a 5yr old japanese film. Still I think Mean streets is one of his greatest films ever, I may rate this third or fourth.

I started off for the first half going "oh hey, this is extremely well done and entertaining", by the end of the movie I was convinced it was one of the best movies of the past decade. f*cking amazing.

I walked out expecting someone to pop out from behind a glass door and shoot me in the face.

EDIT: Also the audible gasp from the girls in the audience after Leo gets shot was worth the price of admission alone. This goes for the Martin Sheen scene as well.

Saw it three days ago, tbh the best movie in years. I was impressed because I don't like Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, or any of the Baldwin Brothers, and this well...it has made me doubt my past decisions.

I really, really have to see this movie. I've been hearing very good things. Loved Taxi Driver, Casino, Cape Fear, and Goodfellas. I can't wait to see this one.

Saw it a few nights ago.

It was amazing. Great performances, good soundtrack, deep characters and story, and more.

I'm definitely gonna see this one again. I reccommend it to any fans of Goodfellas, Casino, or any of Scorcese's movies.

Nor I, a led-by, a moderator, a administrator, or a super administrator care what movie you saw or how many times, you don't deliberately double post.

Does not matter the time difference, you dont double post to keep people updated on what you think of the movie because sadly, no one cares. Also the sheer fact that you called me a "fatty" shows your ignorance and childish tendencies to go on the defensive. Anything else you can gladly take it to the pm.

ps: You could have just edited your post without having to double post.

You're the one being childish. You decided to bump this topic just act like an asshole. Anything else, and you can gladly go f*ck yourself. I don't care for reading anymore of your idiotic rambling.

Good day.

Isn't it ironic how the double posts were on topic, yet Mr. Mod's post wasn't?

I saw this a couple of weeks back. Excellent film. I may have missed something along the way, but the revelation that Jack Nicholson's character was an FBI informant was totally lost on me... it seemed a twist too far. Other than that, it was excellent. It's always nice to see a film break the Hollywood traditions and tell a genuinely interesting story and not play it all by the book; Leo - playing the good guy - getting killed towards the end, was especially unusual.

I saw this only a few days ago, and like everyone else here, I loved it.

This was originally lost on me as well, but after thinking about it on the drive home from the cinema, it began to make sense - he was an FBI informant in order to keep the feds off his case, and it seemed as though it worked. Well, that's my theory anyway, and I'm sticking to it tounge.gif.

As for killing off Leo, it was certainly an interesting twist, although I think it only added to the film's appeal by doing the unexpected. The ending was really good though IMO icon14.gif.

Top movie - I'd go see it again if I could afford it (there's too many other things to spend my cash on).

I would have done the same. Opinions on here have made me go see movies rather than not. And editing a post doesn't bump the topic, so people wouldn't have seen it.

Though, having said that, you both acted like f*cking children. smile.gif

Anyway, saw this today, have to agree with pretty much everyone in here. Though, almost had a sh*t ending if Mark Wahlberg hadn't saved it.

Be careful about making a topic like this when we already have one, you never know when some fat idiot might come along and chew you out because he's on a power trip.

Yeah, I saw it. It was a great movie. Solid, textured characters, great story, incredible performances, and an interesting soundtrack.

And is it really on XBox Live Marketplace? That's weird, I don't think it even has a DVD release yet....

I might just go rent it right now.

So I just got in the dvd to check if there is any difference in the way we can play them on x360, but to my surprise, it was as good as a normal dvd player....i mean, no overheads, the media remote is good and just works like a usual dvd remote.... inlove.gifmusic.gif
