My favorite Westcoast artists will always be everyone from NWA, (old) Snoop, and Westside Connection. Favorite Westcoast rap album is without a doubt the first Chronic from Dr. Dre. It's a classic. Great beats, and 'Stranded on Death Row' f*cking owns.

some great opnions which i agree with aswell i just hope that Dre makes his new album and has some beats like he did on his 2001 album that is my favourate album of all time and then the documentary with 50 cent removed and the Games diss remixes replacing the originals

but 2 Pac what an artist i have quite alot of his stuff one of my fav tracks is Late Nite the unreleased version with DJ Quik & AMG you guys have gotta listen to it

@Gantons Most Wanted: Late Night is an awesome track. They're multiple versions, but great listen any way.

I love West Coast rap because of its history of being distinct from other types. While New York/East Coast rap has that nostalgic lyrical flow, I can't help but nearly nutting myself listening to some old Snoop, NWA or Too Short. I don't really listet a whole lot of mainstream W.C. music though, *cough*Hyphy sucks*cough*. Favorite artist though, as always for me, would be 2Pac. Too unique of a flow and aramada of bars to ignore. Though I'm not sure for my favorite ablum. It'd probably be a toss up with The Chronic, Me Against the World, Doggystyle, Straight Outta Compton, Thug Life Vol. 1, All Eyez On Me, and Doctor's Advocate (hey it's new, but Game's the only mainstream W.C. artist I listen to.

In my view, almost anything produced by Dr. Dre is gold. I loved a lot of his songs from 2001 and the chronic, as well as some songs he did with NWA, tupac (California Love) and Knoc-turnal (The Knoc and Bang Bang). For me, Dre will always define the greatness of West Coast Rap. Of course there were, are, and will be other great West Coast rappers and producers, but Dre's just on another level.

Yeah, if you like lyrics written by other rappers. tounge.gif

No, but seriously. I don't care if his lyrics were written by anyone else, and odds are the stories are being exaggerated anyway. Definitely a pioneer in West Coast hip hop, both from an artist and producer standpoint. Too bad he drops albums once every blue moon. confused.gif

I don't really mind if he doesn't write his own lyrics. Not like it makes the music sound any worse wink.gif

And yes, it is annoying that he releases albums so far apart, but if Detox fulfills its potential, it'll be worth the wait

beanmachine43 how many versions of late nite are they because i've got the 2 versions the one off the album better dayz with the outlawz and then the unreleased version with DJ Quik & AMG and your right about its history but i think its the best type of rap around its ashame about 2 Pac tho he was the guy who made everyone on all the coast step up there lyrics and beats etc but all we've got today is idiots like g unit dissin everybody for no reason when they couldn't step up there game any higher but out of the active rappers i'd say The Game Snoop Dre Jayo Ice Cube DPGC DJ Quik and i like alot of the originals who've been there throughout the beggining but those who've joined g unit west have sold out like Big Syke i thought he was better than that

@Gantons Most Wanted

So far I know of the first two versions you've mentioned, plus an additional one that's available on one of the more recent fan-made mixtapes. I don't recall the name, but it does have a third verse from Pac that I haven't heard on any other of his songs. Not sure which mixtape it is, but you might be able to pick one up at Amazon or some other source of acquiring liscensed songs... notify.gif

I'm not sure that rap will ever reach a point where it was in its prime on either the East or West. The corporations know how successful the industry can be and too many people rhymes about their bling and whips. Unless we have another messiah of hip hop that points this out to everybody, you should get comfortable listening to recycled garbage over and over on the airwaves.

Might this be the time that Chicago takes the reigns then? We don't have too much of a rap history, but our current big-name rappers (Kanye, Common, Twista, and now Lupe Fiasco) are great. The thing I love about them, is that they are actually real rappers, i.e. they don't just rap about how much bling they have, and they actually have flow, unlike many of today's other rappers. Plus, I'd put Kanye right up there with Dre in terms of producing.

I'm not sure if Chicago can "save" rap, but I think right now, we are better than the current West Coast, East Coast, and Southern rappers. Not that I'm biased or anything, though turn.gif

thnx beanmachine43 i'll have a look on mixunit they might have it but cuse i know what you mean yyyeah i'll always like Westcoast G Funk but Kanye West is pretty good and the Westcoast has a few decent current rappers like Jayo Felony or The Game but all those signed to g unit west have sold out and the biggest piece of garbage i've heard from g unit west was spider loc n big sykes all eyes on us now thats recycled stealin Pac's track well the idea

Yeah, I didn't mean to come across as West Coast and East Coast rappers are the only good ones. I'm also not too familiar with any artist nowadays from there other than Kanye, Twista, and Common.

I understand that there are still several rappers that are in the mainstream who have talent and aren't just rapping about the same nonsense, only recycled. Though it is a West Coast G-Funk topic, so I think it'd be better to stay on it, rather than turn it into another mainstream-bashing one.

You should listen to Lupe Fiasco. He could very well end up being the best out of all of 'em. But, like you said, that is discussion for another topic. Back to G-funk...

^ ^ Agreed. The Hyphy movement to me is one of the dumbest things ever. I love E-40 to death with his hilarious lyrics, but he's trying to revive the West in way that it doesn't belong. They claim on saying that Hyphy is its own thing, but it's exactly like Crunk only with better beats and slightly better lyrics.

Don't worry, the guy who is going to re-invent rap music is approaching.

That's why Chamillionaire refers to himself as the Mixtape Messiah. wink.gif Seriously, he wrecks just about any beat they throw at him, how he changes up his rhythm to create a hypnotic sound to the music, very nice I must say.

Ontopic:

Dre

NWA

Snoop

Last re-invention of rap came in the early 2000s with the emergence of the underground scene. On top of that, I've never heard Cham's mixtape sh*t, but his radio sh*t is straight up sorry. If he's the Messiah, I'm the God.

Tupac, king of westcoast rap to most people, is a New Yorker that earned loot when he was a drugdealer and backup dancer when his mother was a crackwhore junkie hahaha. Eastcoast won the war because Tupac was killed first. Only talents on westcoast are Cypress, IceT, Pharcyde and a couple of others that respected the east, and not trying to act hard like them fake ass studio gangsters NWgAy. f*ck COMPTON! You ain't a hiphop head listening to that garbage. From the east you learn, they're teaching the youth, while the west is messing their goddamn brains with that wannabe gangsta bullsh*t.. East created it, west is fakin it. Look at Snoop Doggy now, wearin stupid clothes and cowboy hats even singing in music videos. He's a f*ckin joke, music for 14 year old girls. Blingbling, cadies, hot women in video clips AIN'T HIPHOP. All the f*ckin fault of them westcoast cockroaches, media cocksucking commercial fags. KEEP IT STREET!!

Oooh, goodie goodie! Someone I can rip apart because of idiotic remarks/false statements! wow.gif

Firstly, 2Pac made little dough, actually lost a little bit than initially given to him. He gave it a couple weeks, then the dealers he was connected with chose to have their product back. Secondly, he was a backup dancer while he was recording his album, so he was still that political activist and artist while banging blowup dolls. Thirdly, your taste in hip-hop is limited from what I can tell, so just shut up if you're going to rip the topic. You sound like a fourth-grader who got his Walkman smashed by someone wearing an Eazy-E t-shirt. Fourthly, the East started it, but where are they now? Exactly. Shut up.

Houston, Texas, if I'm not mistaken. And on Ghost of GM's point, I don't think Chamillionaire will save/re-invent/whatever rap. He's not a bad rapper, but he's not really stepping too far outside the box of what is now mainstream (and not very good) hip-hop.

Definitely a great with his story-raps, though I was sort of disappointed with his Laugh Now, Cry Later album. Still good, but I didn't think the beats suited his flow.

Oh, and Eminem isn't West Coast, he's from Detroit. But yeah, still a great artist, though I personally love his Infinite album. inlove.gif
