General GFX Discussion

That's odd, I'm not sure why it's not working for you. When you place the font file into the FONT folder, an installation bar should appear as it's installed. If that's not happening then you might be placing files in the folder that aren't actually font files. Try opening Word or other applications to check if they are indeed there, they might just not be in the correct alphabetical position in Photoshop.

Try downloading them from here if they're not showing up.

I do use that site for the fonts. But it's okay now its all fixed. I did go into the font folder and open up maybe about 2 of the fonts I downloaded. Opened up Photoshop today and everything seems to be working. Thanks for the help. icon14.gif

Not GTA related at all, but figured the "General GFX Discussion" was a good place to post my first piece using a new style

C&C's wanted. I'm pretty much working in a bubble, on my own, so would love some feedback.

I like it too. No real C&C...

I like the little use of lines to define form, gives it a nice effect.

Not sure if I'm liking the eyes... I think the slash through them looks a bit odd.

Does anyone know how to get the picture to stand out of the actual signature? Sorry if you don't understand. So like the image you want say umm...Batman how would you get that picture to stand out on top of the background.

Focus more on the Batman. Like, the background is blurred and Batman isn't. Or good contrast. Background for example is white, Batman is black... or something like that.

No I didn't mean it like that. I meant like how the picture comes out of the actual background edges like FunkyChunky's signature for example.

Oh, that!

Well, I assume you want to do your sig with batman. OK, get a Batman image. Remove the background of the picture.

Lets assume that the background is 300x100. You need to have the actual image size as high as the Batman (...). Now we have 350x100.

Copy the Batman in to the picture, fit it in and you should be done smile.gif. Also, make sure that everything above the background is transparent (excluding the batman). And you need to save it as a .PNG file.

I probably didn't make much sense. But, I hope you understand smile.gif.

Basically you want a part of the image to be clear around another part, right?

What you do is select the area you want to be clear, and just delete it. If you only have one layer then you may have to create another one and make the "Background" layer (the original layer, usually is white) into a normal layer (double click it, and just hit ok). Then select all (ctrl+a) and press the delete key. You'll know it's transparent because it will show a checkered pattern for the background, it's actually transparent. Then put your image on the next layer, and select the area you want gone, and delete that. Save as a .png. GIF files can be transparent as well but the quality isn't as good.

Here's an image to help a bit, and then the final result.

Yeap, you might want to add a drop shadow as well.

I'm new to this part of GTAF and I saw the loading sign attempts on the front page and decided to make this.

how do i give images in gimp a transparent backround?

and is this a font in this image,

user posted image

Depends on what the image is to start with.

For example, if you wanted to remove a colored background from an existing

image (depending on the image and the contrast between the part you wanted

to keep and the bit you wanted to lose) you'd use the wand (fuzzy select) to

remove most of the background, then touch it up a bit. To make the part you

remove become transparent instead of just reverting to the currently set

background color you'd add another layer (a transparent one) below the layer

you're working on.

layer > new layer

Select "transparent" as the layer fill type.

Then just merge them together and save as a type that can support transparency.

That looks like the pricedown font was used as a base, but a few things were done to it.

You'd have to apply your own, in Gimp at least. I'm guessing he did it in PS via

stroke, but that's just a guess. In Gimp I think the closest thing you could do would

be using the edge filter.

Don't hold me to any of that though.

Looks good. Like the pictures on the back of the box. tounge.gif

Well, what does everyone think of my current signature?:

Took a few minutes. Frustrated I couldn't get the Slayer logo in there. mad.gif

I use Paint.NET.

Doesn't look so good. The poor quality of the image plus the fire truck red w/ text just doesn't digest.

I actually did them lines as a mistake, but thought I'd add more as it looked all right.

Anyway, here's things to think about when making not only a sig, but any kind of graphic:

  • Do the colours go well with each other? (If you're using a desaturated image and another colour)
  • The quality of the image(s) in the first place
  • Adding a border always helps
  • Blending, if you're using multiple pictures/whatever
I'm not much of an expert, but there you go.

Decided to go old school with one of my old sigs.

I made all but the top section with the fancy bit.

I think there should be an old skool movement and everyone should wear their 2003/04 sigs.

  • 2 weeks later...

A bit hard to read against the blue background, and when I clicked View Image to see it against white, the white sparks in the middle of blue looked odd.

@manopeace icon13.gif sry

Too bland, and sqaure (or short) sigs look odd imo.

I must say manofpeace, I like your current signature with Niko. It's simple, sharp and looks swish. icon14.gif
