Cran.
After I reformatted, my DVD Drive has been acting all screwy. Any DVD I play skips like crazy and the system runs slow. When even I try to copy something from a DVD it takes ages to copy and the system runs slower. Whenever I burn something the buffer level goes crazy and the system runs slower. Anytime I try to install something from a CD/DVD it takes ages and runs slower. It's only happened after I reformatted my system, and this is driving me crazy. What could be wrong? Firmware? I'm out of ideas. BTW it's a Toshiba SDR6572M 8x Dual layer lightscribe notebook DVD drive. Edited November 30, 2006 by Cran.
Spenc938
Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't have a solution. I would just like to point out that something similar happened on my dads computer after I reformatted and any help would be appreciated. His just stopped working altogether. *gta star*
My advice, don't format the DVD drive. Change it back to it's original settings, if that is possible.
Star-Lord
It is not your DVD Drive? It's the default settings of Windows that makes this occurr on some systems not all. To fix this problem on both HDD and Optical drives do the following and make sure to turn the system completely off for about a minute or so and restart. Just do the following Goto: Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers->Primary IDE Channel & Advanced Settings NOW LOOK FOR: Device 0's 'Current Transfer Mode' should be set to DMA (probably 'Mode 5'), and not PIO. Windows reverts to PIO from DMA after a number of disc reading errors. PIO is a lot slower than DMA and causes the glitches whenever the HDD is accessed, and the really slow startup as everything is read from the disc. This is easily resolved, Athough' if there's an underlying disc problem, it will come back after a time and you would have to repeat this procedure. That's it! Also make sure you are using the Bus drivers CD that came with your Computer/Motherboard and not Windows Default ones.
Fozzy Fozborne
Yeah, as he said, your transfer mode is set to PIO most likely. I had the same exact problem you had with my DVD burner (Samsung 16x Dual-layer with Light-Scribe, if it matters). The first time I tried changing back to DMA, it didn't change. It was stuck on PIO. When this happened I went to the Device Manager (Click start, right-click My Computer, then click on properties, then click on device manager) and under ATA/ATAPI controllers, I right-clicked on primary IDE channel, then clicked UNINSTALL. Next I restarted my computer, and windows discovered the drives (Sony DVD-ROM and Samsung meantioned earlier) and they were both set as DMA (Mode 4 for Sony, 2 for Samsung). CAUTION!!! DO NOT UNINSTALL THE IDE CHANNEL WITH YOUR HARD DRIVE ON IT!!! This will cause a non-boot situation, and I think you'll have to reinstall Windows. One thing my computer did, was whenever I listened to music with the dvd burner burning, it would skip and stutter the music. Hope that solves your problem!
