WSJ: First cases of "Wii Elbow" reported

Aerobic activity with motion-sensing controller causing aches, pains; Nintendo urges exercise to counteract.

Nintendo is seeking to lead the charge against the notion that all gamers are unfit couch potatoes. Nationwide sellouts of the Wii indicate that gamers are supporting that notion, and many have been very vocal about the system's motion-sensitive controller as being a revolution in gaming. The problem is that it appears that after the first week of the console's release, many of those gamers are running out of breath.

The Wall Street Journal says that "Wii elbow" and other Wii-related physical issues may be the first widespread gaming-related injuries since "Nintendo thumb," the condition that ran rampant following the introduction of the NES in the '80s and the SNES in the '90s.

The newspaper spoke with several new Wii owners who were experiencing aches and pains from repeated use of the console. A 12-year-old from Kentucky reported numbness in her right arm after mimicking the motions of bowling and boxing in Wii Sports; a computer programmer in Minnesota, who admits to being "not very active," complained of sore shoulders; and a man in Indiana says he was "soaking wet with sweat, head to toe" after Wii Boxing.

Nintendo vice president of marketing Perrin Kaplan put it plainly. "[The Wii] was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement," she told the WSJ. "If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."

Simply put at the end, if you're not getting enough exercise, like a majority of gamers, you're gonna have to get it the hard way...via la Wii. Lucky for me, I jerk it 5 times a day, and I do Capoeira.

This is why you dont get a Wii if your a hardcore gamer.

I keep laughing at the fact that the Wii is gunna have some exercise games like streaching, etc.

I'm active but I'm not the greatest at sports. But damn, some people out there can't do sh*t. I played the Wii the day it came out at my friends house and I dident even get a sore arm or thumb. We played for about 45 minutes then went on the computer and made stupid videos for 3 hours.

There are have been several fitness games. I know of one that came out for XBOX and PS2, and the PS2 version incorporated the eyetoy as well. Not revolutionary, but probably helpful.

Not to mention the fact that Wii Controllers often slip out of the hands of gamers, causing TV's to break or even that the controllers smash a window.

Which is why there's a wrist strap.

If Mr X can't hold onto a f*cking stick, then Mr X should use the provided safety measures. They come already attached to the controller, and from what I've seen there are reminders all over the place telling you to put it on.

Oh noes, people are feeling like they've been to the gym after playing a console? Noes! Exercise is baaaaad rolleyes.gif

I wanna get one just for this reason. Means I might yet not have to repay my bloody membership.

Or one better, you know those jogging weights? Attach them to your wrists, then play! Arms as big as your mums thighs in no time!

And if you look here you'll see that your precious wrist strap obviously works and causes no problems at all sarcasm.gif

Since when does a few arm movements and flicks of the wrist constitute exercise? Seriously, if you're going to get injured from using the Wii remote for a couple of hours a day then you're probably also long overdue a massive heart attack.
