adam schiller
Hey I was speaking to a friend that said he will be getting a 300GB hard drive and using 100gb as RAM is what he is saying possible or is he lying to me,me not knowing much about Hardware doesn't know what to believe Thanks for all who explain
Kaj.
Yes, he is lying to you, and no, it's not possible.
Brutuz
The only way its possible is by Virtual Memory and that only kicks in after your RAM's full, and no matter how much you associate for it, it really slows down your system.
Kaj.
And if you're wondering what virtual memory is, it's the anti-christ of computing.
Cran.
Virtual memory can still make a difference, you know. My mate couldn't run XP Pro without it running like a fat kid in a marathon without virtual memory set to ~4GBs. 'twas a Pentium III 800MHz with 128MB (If I remember correctly) of RAM. But if you have a quite recent computer, it won't make a difference.
_-playero-_
It does make a difference but it is supposed to be x1.5 of the ammount of RAM. Now, having 100GB is just plain stupid... and it doesn't matter what he's doing, it's a waste. Tell him to use those 100GB to store torrentz; music, movies, apps... just another thug
Yes, he can use the 100gigs LIKE RAM, but it isn't RAM. Bascially your friend is twisting words.
Mark
Agreed, Virtual Memory is useful at times, it actually helps me just about run GTA:SA on my uni PC, but really, there's no substitute for good old RAM. Instead of buying such a large hard drive, he's better off just buying more RAM.

Actually, I think newer versions of Windows use the Virtual Memory for system applications, and reserve your actual ram for user applications. Virtual Memory helps out a lot more than people give it credit for. However, 100 gbs of it is impractical, because it's just not that fast. Brutuz
Is that Vista and MCE 05? cause the XP tweaking book in front of me says pretty much what I said before
Majestic
latency of 2-2-2-5 DDR400/4-4-4-12 DDR800 is ~50ns (nanoseconds) latency of a modern 7200rpm hard drive is ~9ms (milliseconds) which is 9000ns HD as RAM VS RAM as RAM = 180 times speed difference

All you need is 2gb's of real ram and you can run about anything, why have 100 that would be plain retarded.
Star-Lord
It does make a difference but it is supposed to be x1.5 of the ammount of RAM. Now, having 100GB is just plain stupid... and it doesn't matter what he's doing, it's a waste. Tell him to use those 100GB to store torrentz; music, movies, apps... It's 2.5x's on a Xp machine and 1.5 on earlier versions such as Win98 thru Windows Me,Win2000. 100 gigs of vitual memory would effect performance on your system it would make your system slower than it is. Virtual memory is always slower than ram therefore you should only use the reccommended amount. Your system would waste too much time on accessing it than making it any faster for your Apps or games. A 100 gig drive for Storage or important backups would be the best way to go. Serously
