Nemesi
Hi, I've an external USB HD (it's an 60GB Hitachi 2.5"). I've never had a problem with it since I've bought it, but this morning I can't access it anymore: -the first time I plugged it (after I turned on the PC) I received the Windows alert that a remote device has been connected to a not 2.0 USB port. I've only 2.0 USB ports....Anyway, it happens that sometimes I got this error for no reason, so I plugged it of and reconnect it again. -now it's everything slow: as soon as I connect it, the autoplay windows opens, but this time it opens after a while, and scanning it doesn't show anyfile at all (while it shows the files in it). Then, when I try to get into the HD (from Explorer), it refuse to open saying something like: "Can't access to L:\. Error during loading page" (or something similar, I've translated from italian message). I've tried ScanDisk, but it doesn't start, I've tried Deframmenting, but it says "not recognized volume". I've tried using Total Commander to access the disc, but it says that it can't find the disk. And from the disk properties I can see that it's big "0 byte" and there're "0 bytes free". The last thing I'd like to try is formatting it, because I don't have a nackup copy of the datas... I'd like to know if there's a way to move datas to somewhere else (where I can read them) and formatting the disk... I hope someone could help me, thanks a lot... Forgot the specs: Windows XP SP2, no virus, no ads... if you need other specs tell me, because I don't know what can be usefull to you in this case... Pranjal
Have you tried plugging it in all the USB ports one after the other? Or is it displaying the same problem?

Pranjal
First of all , you have to determine whether the problem lies in your USB ports or in the HDD itself. You can plug in any other USB compliant devices like thumbdrives into the ports. If they are working, it is obvious that your USB ports are functioning properly. In any case if your other USB compliant devices are getting recognised by Windows, you can count out Windows as the mischief maker. Finally, you are left with no other option but to check the HDD itself. Try contacting the Hitachi consumer support describing your problem in detail. They will surely help you. Well with my limited knowledge about portable HDD, I have tried my best to advise you.Hope it helps
Nemesi
I've tried several things this weekend: the result was that a sector of the HDD was damaged... Thanksfully, I had a recovery software (I already had problems with damaged memory supports in the past) so I recovered everything, then I formatted the HDD. Now it seems to work.. At the moment I'm doing reading-writing test to check if everything is ok (I hope nothing is seriously damaged...I don't want to buy a new HDD). Thanks a lot anyway Pranjal
