First of all i'm suprised that this film doesn't already have a topic about it, and if there is it's not on the first page so sorry for missing it.

Anyway, i must say this is one of the best James Bond i've seen for ages. Daniel Craig really pulls it off as a great James Bond. Saw this at the cinema last night and it was on of the most packed cinema's that i've been in.

In my opinion this film is a must-see, the action, story and action scenes were all top-notch. Although practically every thing electronic has 'SONY' written on it, but it was under their film section so thats okay i guess.

What are other people's views on it?

Yeah that's what I was wondering, it seems this film is based on Ian Fleming's first book so does this mean Casino Royale is a prequel to all the other James Bond films and we get to see Moneypenny meet Bond for the first time?

Going to see it tomorrow anyway so I'll give my view then.

It's set in modern times (i.e. he uses a Sony Vaio laptop), but it's based on Ian Fleming's first novel where Bond just gains his 00 status and his first professional kill.

Awesome film, best Bond since Connery IMO.

I feel that this guy will be taken as the new kid. I don't think I'm old enough to remember how previous Bond's were at their debuts, but it's hard to beat Pierce Brosnan, not to even mention Sean Connery.

I still wanna see it.

The timeline confused me a fair bit. I was convinced it was supposed to be set a bit in the past, but then M mentions 9/11.

Also, as much as it's a good thing, why suddenly stop using all the gadgets if it's still set after the Brosnan period? dontgetit.gif

I think many people felt that the gadgets were being over-used and were taking away from Bond himself. I personally liked all the gadgets, but I guess I'm in the minority...

Haven't seen this Bond yet, but I'm hoping to sometime this week. Can't wait icon14.gif

Doesn't come out here til the 7th of December which sucks, I am really excited though as I have gotten over the initial "omg whose dis new guy" syndrome. I have Layer Cake sitting here ready to watch so I like Daniel Craig before I've seen him in one of his great roles. I just know he's supposed to be a great actor and based on that and what I've seen of the movie I think he's the refreshing new face to make James Bond fresh again.

I think that was all about Bond getting back to basics and messy again in his killing techniques. Why use a remote control car with a bomb on it to dispose of an enemy when you can kick 'em in the balls instead.

Also there was Q, then R in the books/films and seeing as this would be the first outing for Bond, they'd need a pretty young Q to play the character. And the fact Bond and Q met in a previous film for the first time, so it'd just f*ck up the continuity of the film. wink.gif

So yeah, saw this film earlier. I'm undecided on what rating I would give it but I was really enjoying it up until Le Chiffre is killed Then it started to drag a bit and I thought the final set piece was a bit of a let down...

I certainly agree, it makes the plot a bit 'bitty'. Also, what an undramatic death for Chiffre.

I liked how they saved Bond. James Bond. until the end.

This movie once again proves to me that Rotten Tomatoes is sh*t. No way that this movie gets over 80%.

It's good, yes, but not 95% good.

It was great for me until the scenes after the balls torture...from there it was crappy.

And talk about a crappy uneventful ending...

It's average rating is 7.9 (almost exactly what you said it should be). 95% of the critics think it's a good film.

I myself thought it was fantastic, though I have to admit the last 15 or so minutes just didn't work out imo.

Yeah, when Bond setted off after Vesper's kidnappers I expected some cool chase at night. A car chase is one thing every Bond film needs.

The ending's like that, because they're going to carry it on in another film. Apparently Campbell (director) wanted to combine both Casino Royale and (the un-named) 'Bond 22' in the same film, however he was eventually persuaded out of doing this, so now (in around a year or two) 'Bond 22' will be released and everything will make sense.

Maybe I expected as good of a reinvention as Batman Begins was...tho that will never be topped I suppose.

Sorry to bump but I totally agree, I didn't like the film for the most part it was a great film but not a great Bond film. It tried too hard to be revolutionary by going back to the beginning being the first book but I think it missed what Bond is now. I understand this is supposed to be the beginning of James Bond and its obviously going to show the makings of the iconic aspects of the character much like Batman Begins. Problem is Batman Begins allowed Bruce Wayne to become the full-fledged Batman whereas I didn't feel we got to see the true James Bond. I mean it was funny to see how they tried to introduce his signature things such as the car and the famous shaken not stirred martini but that's all they were, simply hints and hardly touched on. The reason being is that there was more focus on the romance which for Bond is usually a "love ya and leave ya" kinda of thing that just fits into the action and story. In the movie it seemed to dominate over everything and so there were only 2 or 3 actual action sequences and not a real car chase in sight!

Daniel Craig is great but he is not Bond, he's a great ruthless assassin but that isn't the Bond I know based on the likes of Connery, Moore or Brosnin. And for crying out loud where's the signature 007 pre-credit actions scene that ends in the classic tune which makes no appearance in the movie at all!

At last. Thankyou. This is what I have been trying to explain to the huge number of idiots who continually approach me whining about the latter half of the movie.

Casino Royale was f*cking great. Craig passed all expectations I had of him, I admit to being a member of the WTFZ DANEL CRAG!?1 when it was first announced.

Roll on Bond 22!

It's hard, because the 20 films preceding Casino Royale have portrayed Bond as a 'playa' so to speak, with his signature drinks, his lines, his manner around women, however he was never written like that. Daniel Craig IS the Bond Fleming wrote about in the novels. If you get a chance, read a couple and you'll see that Fleming wrote about a ruthless assassin who loves the kill in the name of her Majesty, not a Brosnan type character (who was poor as Bond anyway, with Goldeneye just giving him a little credibility at all). Anyway, massive Bond fan here, read quite a few of Fleming's books, seen every film atleast 3 times (inc Royale) and I'd still rate it among the top 3, if not the best Bond film now.

I just got back from it. I thought it was pretty good minus a few things.

1. No big car chase scene at all

2. No big climactic fight scene at the end

3. Just about no use of the Bond theme. There were plenty of moments where I was waiting to hear it fire up but it never came

4. The ending was kind of dragged out

Other than that I thought it was a great movie. I thought the guy who played the villain was very awesome.

That's the problem Daniel Craig played the Fleming version of Bond which to me works for the book but not in a movie format when you consider the previous films that create a slightly different image of Bond. Forgetting the last 20 films it would of been a great introduction into 007 because it would be unfamiliar to most people and we wouldn't have the comparisons. I just think the movie missed the point of the rest of the movie series. They were entertaining action fests not this more gritty and realistic movie almost in the style of The Bourne Identity. As cliche' and predictable as the last couple of 007's have seemed I prefer it as I know what to expect.

Wow, this movie sounds good. It's a damn shame I didn't see it in the theaters. I guess i'll just have to wait until it comes out on DVD. You guys do know the next Bond movie is predicted to come out in 2008, right?
