Malin Akerman was flat out terrible.

Haha, I actually wasn't that bothered by her. I thought I'd hate her, but no. Although when she said the "it's like licking a battery" line, I admittedly cringed.

And I accept Crudup as Doc. I imagine an actor with a deeper, God voice woulda been mocked to no end. I imagine. But Billy captured that not of this world mindset. He gave a great, blank, not here performance if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I know what you mean - but I think it verged on timidity, which seemed a little silly at times. Anyhow, yeah, I thought Akerman was pretty damned bad. She was totally outclassed by her companions in every scene. Watch some clips of her. objectively, and tell me that she honestly gave her best effort. I think Snyder's great in terms of overall vision, but his actors often seem undirected to me.

Her line-reading was weak, for sure. I'm glad there was no scenes where she really needed to cry and talk in front of the camera for an extended period of time. It would have been atrocious.

Acting wise, I might break it down, from best to worst:

Jackie Earle Haley

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Billy Crudup

Patrick Wilson

Matthew Goode

Malin Akerman

Goodfella.

I must of been the only person not impressed by Jackie Earle Haley, he just seemed too predictable... I'm sure a dozen other actors could of brought the same to the role. My favourite performances in the film were by Patrick Wilson and Billy Crudup, but that's just me.

I enjoyed the film but I think it stuck too close to the source material, it just doesn't come off half as good as it does in the graphic novel. I scratched my head a bit at the endings alteration, not that a giant alien squid would of gone down too well on screen either.

I'll no doubt buy the region 1 directors cut soon.

I rewatched the DVD last night and I must say, this movie is even more enjoyable the second time through.

although there is one thing I noticed that I thought was odd. During the intro credits where it is showing the watchmen history to the Bob Dylan song The Times They Are A-Changin', there is a part where a naked man briefly walks in front of the screen. Obviously I missed this the first time through, and even the second time when I caught it I had to rewind quickly to confirm. Here are some screenshots for proof. (no worries, only backside here)

I know it's Watchmen and all, and there is a lot of weird stuff going on in it. But I see no logical reason for this naked guy to be walking through a scene full of clothed people at an art gallery. dontgetit.gif The fact that it is done in such a way to make it hard to notice makes me question it even more...

Just a visual representation of how crazy Warhol's factory was, really.

guess that could be true. Andy Warhol was a very free spirited type of person haha.

You can see a gal there who may be Edie Sedgwick, and the nude guy may be one of his actors from the film he did with the nude dudes and the horse. Or one of the other superstars. I'm pretty sure there was a dude who walked around naked.

True, but we could be overanalysing. I'm sure it wasn't a rare thing to have naked people in the factory. It seems to be more a throw away moment to me, rather that something referential.

I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of extra details hidden throughout that whole opening sequence. It was rather exquisitely art directed.

I especially dug both the assassination scene and the 'last supper' setup.

Is that supposed to be Truman Capote standing next to Andy Warhol? I know almost nothing about Truman Capote, I'm just basing this observation on his appearance in the film 'Infamous'.

Yeah, I think you're right, and I think that's supposed to be Lou Reed behind them as well.

I'm also pretty sure that's David Bowie and McJagger standing outside Club 54 with Ozymandius.

^ Me too! Can't wait to see the deleted scenes and how it mixes up with the rest of the flick, hoping it will balance the story a bit more...

Everyone I know hated this film with a passion, saying that it's dragging and all, and not how superhero movies should be... Yeah right, like Wolverine was their favorite superhero flick.

I really get annoyed when the general public say have a stereotypical view of how superhero flicks should be portrayed, all action and sfx with just little character development just coz' their brains can't stand more than an hour of exposition to develop these characters (although I do respect their opinions, since I did check my brain out the door before watching RoTF, and I enjoyed it, ffs...). A friend of mine who liked the flick stated that "Watchmen is a film for comic book purists and geeks..." which I sadly had to agree to.

Some friends and I went to New York City for a screening of the director's cut (a little out of the way for something we could have just bought on DVD/Blu-ray, but we're too cool, so we drove up to the only theater that was listed as playing it). I liked the new footage, but I felt the original "LEAVE ME ALONE" scene worked a little better for some reason. Probably because it was very chaotic and then suddenly completely silent: for some reason I liked that better than the director's cut version where he teleports everyone out and then gets to Mars a scene or two later (can't remember how it went in the book, though). But overall I liked the new stuff.

Bought the Blu Ray of the directors cut. There were some scenes I wished were in the theatrical cut.

I know this is a ten year old necro bump and this will probably need its own thread at some point but I felt this was the best place to put this teaser of HBO's upcoming Watchmen series that takes place after the events of the graphic novel:
