Liberty City Underground

Fly Beneath the City and Go Exploring

by GTA_Loco

Have you ever wondered where else can you possibly explore Liberty City apart from the usual places in the three islands that are aboveground? Well here's one you might find rather interesting to visit during your spare time in the game: below the city and see what's underneath it.

It's been a common stuff already in all the GTA trilogy to have some hidden places to venture into, so expectedly Liberty City Stories as a GTA game must also have one.

I'm just sharing here the hidden underground "world" of Liberty City if it can be called that way. About four entry points in two Islands have been found leading to the underworld of Liberty City; two in Portland Island and the other two are in Staunton Island with both entry points on each island located just nearby each other and hidden in the middle of a cluster of buildings.

The gray space/hell under the city connects to all three islands travelling by helicopter, so using only any one of the entry points would take you anywhere down already. It also doesn't take much effort to explore the places apart from the fact that you do not need to cheat to do so. All you need to have is a helicopter to fly around literally "downtown".

Initial explorations of the city's underworld however haven't led yet to any of the interiors that can be found in the cut scenes, but who knows what can be possibly discovered there. A few attempts were also made at travelling to where Ghost Town was supposedly located but there were invisible barriers along the mountains and such effort had been fruitless so far.

Interiors

There are several "interiors" that you can fly into, all of which are empty places and none so far has led to cut scene related ones. One mission-related interior however can be accessed via this underworld way, and this is the closed portion of the tunnel where you'd do the mission Bringing the House Down which was accessible only during the said mission.

Among the flyable interiors that have been used in previous and recent games include Joey's Auto Shop in Trenton, St. Fancis International Airport & Fr. Ned's church.

It's a Surreal World

Want to see something out of the twilight zone? Some of the things you can find under the city include floating trains, chinese banners, structures, ruins, people walking and cars driving on air, a place where people, bikes & cars fall into gray hell, a floating university, an upside down radio station, travel underwater & invisible train tunnel. Particularly amusing is how people, cars and bikes fall into gray hell and into you every now and then when you go to Chinatown.

Actually most of what you can find down below also exist above ground, only seen in a rather strange way.

How to Get There

A helicopter. That's all you need to fly to access Liberty City's underworld without even cheating. You must only be careful when navigating in some areas or close to the surface since there seems to be some invisible hard objects in some parts of the way. Flying too low into gray hell would spawn you along with the helicopter somewhere in the island, which is also one method you can utilise to quickly get back above ground.

Following are some snapshots that would take you to a little tour around the surreal place below. Quality of the picture is not too good but clear enough to give you a visual of what Liberty City is like from underneath.

China Town

This is one amusing place to visit. From a distance you'd only see what seems like a floating subway terminal with people and a train stopping by every now and then, but as you approach it, the terminal would be like just a solid structure and a concrete subway tunnel would suddenly appear from nowhere. The train and people would be gone, the concrete tunnel would be turned into something like a concrete road. If you're not careful in your approach, you'd damage your helicopter.

The amusing part is how people, bikes and cars would surprisingly rain down around the place into gray hell. Unfortunately due to poor picture quality it was hard to take some snapshots of the falling things, so it's best maybe that you should just experience the actual event yourself.

Subway Station

From a distance the station looks just like normal, with a few people you can see. But once you approach it, a concrete structure which happens to be where the railroad tracks are would just appear. At this point people, bikes and cars would start falling down into gray hell, some into the concrete structure. You can steal a car here and take a short drive before you stop at a certain point.

Subway Station

It's quite a different scenario here. You wouldn't witness much falling people and vehicles, but just occasionally. The behavior of the subway station though is quite similar to the one found in Portland, wherein a concrete structure would appear once you approach it. Here however, the way leading East has a soft surface that would prevent you from going any further.

As you approach the subway, a concrete tunnel/road would appear, subway would be closed and the train gone very similar to the station in Portland.

Getting Into Closed Staunton Tunnel

Here's how you can access again the tunnel where you did the mission Bringing the House Down. The only catch here is that, once you get inside, there seems to be no way out. No exit point has been found yet how to get back to the normal world. Dropping down to gray hell at the end of the East side of the tunnel would spawn you back to inside or sometimes you'd end up into an endless loop of bobbing up and down into air.

Fly down below Staunton Island using any of the entry points at Fort Staunton. When you're down already, look for a long and winding redish road-like thing, which is actually the outside of the tunnel that connects the islands.

user posted image

Once you see it, simply approach it very close and then drop down to gray hell, either in the helicopter or by just bailing out. You'd instantly find yourself somewhere inside the tunnel already. This you should work though while you're anywhere in Staunton. If you drop down into gray hell far from the tunnel, you'd spawn somewhere in the island above ground.

Take note though that there appears to be no way back to the normal world once you get in the tunnel. Dropping down into gray hell would spawn you back in almost the same spot, or sometimes you'd end up in an endless loop, as if you're bobbing up and down into space.

SHORESIDE VALE

Access to this island can be via any of the Staunton or Portland entry points or starting from the Staunton ferry terminal going to Shoreside Vale. You can fly around the mountains to reach Cedar Grove. You must just fly close to the mountains almost hugging them already or you'll hit some invisible barriers. Underneath this island there aren't much to see unlike in Staunton or Portland.

Cedar Grove Tunnel

Quite a relaxing scenery here. You can see some small birds flying in this place. Going around the mountains to your left would take you back to the ferry terminal in Staunton Island.

I've never heard of this. It looks cool. Do I really need a heli though? Also, could you explain in a bit more detail where the 4 way points are?

Definitely, since that's the only way for you to travel around from place to place. As for the entry points, you could find three of these in the locations shown in the pictures and marked as well on the map.

@genaga, thanks for informing me that this was found already. My research didn't result in anything with mention about this, so I wasn't aware that this was old news. I'd be glad too if you could provide me with links as to where this was discussed before.

But maybe for those who hasn't seen this yet, I'd just like to think this is a little something that I could share which they might find a small amusing thing to do in the game wink.gif

I never knew that you could fly beneath Staunton or portland but I have been past the barriers of the SSV hills. You can go underneath some houses in Cedar Grove. And see some tunnels that appear and disappear. I used a stinger and the "cars drive on water cheat" only.

Edit: I just tried it there. It's great fun standing on the underground tunnel and trying to dodge all the cars and peds falling on your head! When I stood on top of one of the train stations underground I noticed that you can't shoot peds through the invisible surface with any weapon apart from the snipers. Weird.

Wait a sec, you said you didn't need to cheat to get to the underworld, but yet you need a helicopter? Is that not a contradiction?

There isn't a contradiction. I thought you read this already;)

Holy sh*t. I hadn't noticed that thread. Yeah that's pretty cool. Although it says somewhere in it that you need a cheat to store the helicopter in your garage. Is is true?

Nope. I just pushed it in with a V8 ghost. I almost got it in when I hit a strange spot and it flipped over. I thought I lost it but when I reopened the garage it had flipped itselp back over.

Well that settles it. Roll on False Idols. I think the ambulance looks to be the best method, no? Also can you fit another car in there?

I would use the ambulance way, I tried the bike way in free roam but I couldn't do it lol. There would be enough room left in the garage to store a Bike, but not a car. You could try but you would need to remove the car to get the heli out.

Yeah thats true. And there's not much point storing a bike, considering that a PCJ spawns there after you do the car collecting mission.

Well I started the false Idols mission with the ambulance on the bridge etc................and got the helicopter. I pushed it into my garage with a V8 ghost. But the door closed over with the tail sticking out. And when I walked over to the garage and opened the door, it was.......GONE!! I swear, I could have cried. Why is this? Is it because the tail was sticking out? Do I need to have the entire heli in the garage?

(sorry for the double post)

Fly over to the tunnel that is still being built, when you find it make sure your not near the part of the tunnel that you can drive in. fly your heli under the tunnel thats being built then hold square and go down then you will respawn in the tunnel lol.gif hooray,

If you complete the love media garage mission, you will always have a V8 ghost at hand for pushing the chopper in.

Weell, I'm sure if I tried for long enough I'd get it. Anyway, at least I have it, and that's what counts. A bit of sight seeing to be done now. What do you guys recommend are the coolest places to go? I'm definitly gonna try the underworld. Any other points of interest?

Well first off congrats you finally got that bitch dragonfly lol.gif You should've kept the Walk in the Park Sentinel in your garage which is a heavy car and you can push the Heli with that with much ease no doubt.

Try visiting Cedar Grove, particularly by the tunnel just behind the mountains. Do it in the daytime. It has a relaxing ambience plus you get to see some birds flying by which you will never see in the normal world. Or you can visit Francis Int'l airport and see those people walking on air wink.gif

Did that already. That was pretty cool.

I'll give Cedar grove a shot. I'm definitly going to try the underworld. I didn't get a chance yesterday, as it took me an hour to get the Damn chopper into the garage. There was a heart stopping moment, when I got pissed off with it and rammed it a bit to hard, and knocked it on its side. I nearly had a heart attack. The smoke was starting to come from it, but a tactful bash on the front windscreen got it back up again (phew)

An hour? Wow, that heli really gave you one hell of a time. Just easy on it or you won't enjoy anything at all if you have a heart attack biggrin.gif

You might want to have a look also at the floating St. Mathias University in Liberty Campus. But your position would be described underworld in Aspatria. Don't know why that's the case.

Well good luck and hope you have a pleasant tour wink.gif

Yeah, it was a bit troublesome, but I got the swing of it eventually. Now I have to get it out. That will be fun. Not. At least I know it CAN be done. It's just a matter of finding the knack for it.

Anyway, like I said, it's in there now, and that's the main thing.

I would go to chinatown in the underworld, it's entertaining watching people and cars falling from everywhere. ph34r.gif Be sure to visit the stadium aswell to see whats inside.
