fox09
After watching a few videos of Mr. Big ( another hair-band, shut up. ), I've been trying to figure out how to play like Billy Sheehan. I'm not really sure on the concept, but it looks like he hammers with his left hand, and taps the strings with his right. If anyone who knows how to do this, some tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Video.
lesfleanut
Yeah, you have the right idea... Best to start of with something easy like jerry was a racecar driver by primus. After you learn that, stop f*cking tapping, because it is retarded.
fox09
Mhmm. Great reason. I'm still not sure what he's doing. Is he actually hitting a specific fret with his right hand? Or is he just hitting the string so he can get sound out of it? If someone explained to me how to do that crazy trill at the beginning, I'm sure I could figure the rest out. fox09
Explain to me what those are and maybe I'll try.
Lynk
They are guitars played basically by tapping the notes. But if you don't know how to tap in the first place then the whole suggestion is useless no? Use your left hand to finger the fret, then tap the hammer on with your right hand. Thats how you would play a hammeron/pulloff. Google bass tapping lessons for something more into what your looking for, as I didnt watch the video (dont have the time atm) I am not intirely sure what you are getting towards. Google video might be able to help you out there too, maybe YouTube also. Have fun, its nice to nail a technique but I am not a big fan of bass tapping anyway. Check out Stu Hamm's "Country Music - A Night in Hell" for some cool tapping, I admire that guys skill. Heres a video, look for the closeups to see his technique. http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...8114&q=Stu+Hamm
Moonshield
Explain to me what those are and maybe I'll try. Chapman Stick Wiki. Have at it.
lesfleanut
OK, let me elaborate: Although it makes you look so cool at the local guitar shop, there is no place for it in music without being cheesy. Take stu hamm for example, he's amazing at bass, but he couldn't write a good song to save his damn life. The same goes for sheehan. They both reek of cheese. My advice, learn to walk. Because tapping won't make you a better musician. If you really want to learn a parlor trick though, try one that you can use with actual music, like artificial harmonics. I love using them on my fretless and sliding them up or down an octave. Even on a normal bass they add excitement. As for the beginning part that you want to learn, its a simple series of hammer ons and pull offs, think hendrix with two hands.
fox09
Another video. That's a better video, a lot easier to see. And Les, I appreciate the advice, but I really don't want your opinion. And as for the beginning, I've got the tabs, and know how to play hammer ons, and pull-offs. I'm just confused as to what the right hand is doing. The closest thing I've got to sounding like that is just picking as fast as possible on the string, while doing the trill, and same for the other intro part. Informant X
The best advice for anyone wanting to learn how to master the hammer technique on bass or six string is to study Eddie Van Halen guitar tab. He gave meaning to the hammering.
