ybakker
Then and Now ('84 and '86) I got the idea from Liberty City Stories “Then and Now” (by da gta master, now Dodgy Dan), and decided to try to analyze/compare the available pictures from VCS now myself. I hope this topic is useful. Major Changes in VCSThere is a new Trailer Park around Sunshine Autos in Viceport. Leaf Links is still there in 1984. The Skyscraper in Downtown is still there in 1984. The “Malibu” club and Gonzalez’s Penthouse behind it have been removed in VCS The “Chunder Wheel” is new in VCS (replacing the construction site) There’s a new ship with neon lighting anchored along the Mainland in Little Havana. The Military Base has changed a lot. The construction in “Demolition Man” hasn’t been started yet. The A Container Ship in Viceport has been removed. Ocean Beach 1. Ocean Drive: Victor (viewed from the north) Victor is holding a new SMG. All trees here are different. The bush on the left is the same. Some trees on the right are missing in 1984. I don’t know what the thing (showed by the arrow) is. 2. Ocean Drive: Nightime + Ped (viewed from the north) The neon lighting on the right has changed. In 1984, a pink neon light is seen under the pedestrian’s left arm. But in 1986, it’s yellow. There’s a new lamppost in 1984. The ped is a new skin. The trees are changed. 3. Ocean Drive: Infernus (viewed from the north) The colors of the buildings have changed between 1984 and 1986. Moonlite Hotel’s sign is blank in 1984. There are two added lampposts in 1984. Further than the lampposts, there are no physical changes. 4. Ocean Drive: Moonlite Hotel (viewed from the southeast) No clear differences. The textures of the hotel walls have changed (and they look a lot better now). 5. Helipad, Southern tip of Ocean Beach (viewed from the northeast) The big H on the helipad is new, and the red lights are gone. The trees are perfectly the same as before. No more differences. 6. Ocean View Hospital (viewed from the northwest) A pink building in the background (shown by the arrow) is missing. Well, at least it may be lower. I think we can only see the Multistory Carpark (which is behind the pink building). New trees. 7. Marina: Colonel Cortez (viewed from the north) Everything looks perfectly the same. Draw distance may be better in VCS than than the PC version of VC. You can see the small shack on stilts in the water (arrow). But, draw distance may be increased just for this picture. The billboard sign cannot be seen isn’t seen because of the draw distance, however it is seen in image #8. 8. Behind the Marina: Barracks and a Maverick (viewed from the south) The billboard sign is shown in this picture contrary to image #7. Other than that, I see no other differences. 9. Between Pole Position and Ammunation (viewed from the east) New neon lights on the Green building. New textures + trees. (Just for clarification: the explosion took out the traffic lights). ybakker
10. Marina (viewed from the west) No difference except the sky. The yellow glow is possibly new. The buildings’ lighting is the same. (There may be a shark in VCS water, but that’s hard to tell.) With the better quality, it is obvious that there is no shark in this image. 11. Beach: Lighthouse + Sandking (viewed from north) See also image #12 A few trees in the background have disappeared. 12. Lighthouse (viewed from west) See also image #11. Again, a few trees are missing. Maybe the tip (antenna) of the Lighthouse has been shortened. Everything is perfectly the same. Washington Beach 13. Canals: Squalo (viewed from the southwest) No difference here, concerning building/textures/models. Maybe some color changes. Everything looks brighter in VCS. 14. Red Stinger + Ped (looking northwest) There is proof that Leaf Links is in VCS. You can see a few trees from Leaf Links (shown by the red arrow) There are new tree textures and models. A new car (as said on GTAPSP), or it’s a Stinger. The construction in “Demolition Man” isn’t there, meaning it hasn’t started being built yet. (Like in image #15, #24, #29 and #36) On the left, there’s a black building replacing the “Demolition Man” construction. There’s another black building/object behind the pink apartments. I checked whether it was the back of the billboard that advertises the construction, but that’s a different color. They could buildings at the Mainland. But that's unreasonable, since you can't see any building downtown. The color would be lighter as well. I think the black objects are new. In the background, you can’t see any of the buildings in Downtown, probably because of the draw distance. Because in image #23, you can clearly see the silhouette of building “1” in Downtown. The only uncertainty is of the Skyscraper. We cannot see it in image #23 either, because it is a draw distance issue We can see the skyscraper in image #18. 15. Chunder Wheel (viewed from the north) The new Chunder Wheel supposedly located where the arrow is pointing at in VC. I've numbered prominent buildings (and tree), to further prove the location is correct. The building you blow up in “Demolition Man” isn't there in 1984. (Like in image #14, #24, #29 and #36). Construction on that building obviously started after 1984 (or, you possibly get to see it being constructed during the story) Edit: see image #26. Although it is faint, there is a construction crane above Demolition Man construction. There are lightposts at the right of the VCS picture. However, I haven't seen any roads that ought to be there in VC. Each post has 2 lights on them. There aren't any lights like those around the construction site in VC. 16. Western Bank: Apartments (viewed from the northwest) The mall has disappeared (shown by the arrow) This is the mall where you are ambushed by the French. In the background, the tall buildings’ models don’t look the same. Some small differences can be seen. Perhaps the buildings at this distance have a lower polygon number than in Vice City. However, in image #10, the models look similar. The building at the right (shown by the arrow) isn’t shown in 1984 because of a draw distance issue Edit: Now with the digital image from the VCS site, we can see the building. It is shown in image #1 and image #3. Leaf Links 17. Leaf Links (viewed from the west) Notice that Prawn Island has disappeared (shown by the arrow) Clearly (with the new digital image), there is no Leaf Links Golf Course in 1984 (contrary to what GamesMaster magazine states). However, in 1986 there is. Replacing the golf course in 1984, is just water. The water looks different than the water in the foreground, but that’s because of the distance. To everyone who thinks the water may be an explanation, look at image #10. The water has the same pattern: a dark part in between 2 lighter parts. And adding to that, the water’s color looks different not only where Leaf Links was, but also at north Vice Point. Therefore, this explanation means nothing. Now we know Leaf Links does exist. 18. Western Tip of Leaf Links (viewed from the south) In this picture however, Leaf Links is obviously present. I have matched trees A B C D and E for your convenience. Now we know the skyscraper is still in Downtown. Much of the shrubbery from Leaf Links is gone in 1984. That car is a Hermes, whose original color was black with yellow flames. Now it has a new skin/texture where the main color is white with fading orange flames. (The flames are in different positions from the original) The Hermes is either driving on a new road, or it’s driving on the grass of the golf course. Perhaps The part of Leaf Links south of the bridge/road, wasn’t built yet, and there were still some roads, building, etc. in 1984. Vice Point 19. Sunset: Neon-Lighted Hotel (viewed from the southwest) You can see that the neon lighting on the hotel has changed. In 1986, Vice City in general has hardly any distinct lights apart from Ocean Drive. In VCS, there are obviously more. The trees in VCS are new. ybakker
20. East of Leaf Links: Jetski (viewed from the northwest) Not much has changed here (except for the jetski ) I doubt we’re going to see the same rampage, which used to be here in Vice City. Notice that Avery’s Construction (where the Chunder Wheel will be) is removed (shown by the arrow). The trees are also missing, but this is a draw distance issue. The trees ought to be seen in this image, because they are shown in image #25. 21. Beach: White Hotel + Ped (viewed from the east) The ped model is new I think (correct me if I’m wrong). She’s holding a life preserver. (I don’t think it will be a weapon, since other peds carried items like shopping bags as well.) A new texture has been added to the 1984 building at the far right. There’s a new tree on the right as well. 22. South of the Malibu: Regina (viewed from the north) A building on the left (shown by the arrow) is missing in VCS. The car is a Regina. Tree textures are new in VCS. Almost all of the trees in this VCS picture are different from VC. (They look better. The tree right in front of us in 1984, could’ve come straight from San Andreas.) 23. The Malibu: Comet (viewed from the south) That car is a Comet. It's in front of the Malibu club. There are differences in models and textures of the trees. From the VCS picture, I can clearly see that there is no “Malibu” club in 1984. In the background, seen through the back of the Comet, there is no sort of long low building, like the “Malibu”. You can clearly see the horizon. The Penthouse where Gonzalez usually hangs out (you kill him in VC), is also missing from VCS. I have marked a blue dot as a reference point. The building behind the Comet that we can see (under the blue dot), is the building far more north in Vice Point. The skyscraper is not seen in 1984, perhaps because of a draw distance issue. However, it’s also not there in image #14 nor in image #29. Perhaps that area is being developed between 1984 and 1986. The skyscraper, however, is seen in image #18. Building “1” is in Downtown an is seen in 1984 as well, unlike image #14. 24. New Building Image 1 (viewed from the north) See also image #25 This is a new building opposite Avery’s Construction site. Obviously, you can’t see the Demolition Man construction anymore. (Like in image #14, #15, #29 and #36) A tree has been removed. The small houses have been replaced by this larger hotel building. (I’m beginning to think it might be a save point) 25. New Building Image 2 (viewed from the south) See also image #24 I do not know if the bike Victor is riding on is new or not. There’s a new building replacing the small houses. A few trees in the background (shown by the arrows) have been removed. I cannot see the skyscraper (at the far left) in the 1984 picture. Little Havana 26. Eastern Bank: Bridge + 2 Bikes (viewed from the northwest) Those are 2 PCJs new bikes, not PCJs (check the Official Vehicle List). On the left, we are looking at the bridge to Starfish Island, but all the shrubbery's gone. The two bushes we see in 1986, aren’t in 1984. (the lampposts might be gone too, although this isn’t really possible to tell). The public phone can't be determined, because VCS's image is zoomed in too much. There is a small bit of proof that the Phone is still there with the new image. (thanks jman12343) On the right, the road sign is still there, meaning Little Havana, Viceport, and the airport are all still there . Those are new ped skins on the PCJs bikes and another white Hermes in the background. The billboard in 1986 (shown by the arrow), is missing in 1984. 27. Eastern Bank: New Ship (viewed from the west) There’s new ship, anchored along the bank of the Mainland. The tree isn’t new. It’s just heavily bending over the water. Behind the ship, there are three numbered buildings, which match the buildings in the 3rd image. Notice that Diaz’s Mansion is still on Starfish Island. (Hopefully, we’ll receive missions there.) The Phoenix could be on a new parking lot. Victor Vance is holding some kind of silenced submachinegun. Viceport 28. Eastern Bank: Infernus (viewed from the south) Due to the PSP's shorter draw distance, building “2” and the surrounding buildings in the background cannot seen. This is proven to be a technical issue: The buildings are seen in image #26. The bridge on the right is still there. The construction site (at the right) isn’t there in VCS. (Like in image #14, #15, #24 and #36) 29. Eastern Bank: Houses (viewed from east) (Correction: these same houses are also in Vice Point. Thanks lurchseesu420.) The freight crane is still there in south Viceport. The building as well. The trees have changed. The grass in 1986 has disappeared. The buildings have been remodeled a bit. ybakker
30. South of the Fuel Tanks: Vic + New Guy (viewed from northwest) See images #31 and #33 for the same character. Could he be a friend of Phil? Phil has a Confederate flag hanging over his bed in his trailer. There’s a new hotel (obviously shown by the sign), a new wall next to the sidewalk, and the airport directions sign is gone. (There still is an airport, indicated by image #27’s road sign.) In my opinion, it means the airport wasn’t as big as in 1986. If the sign isn’t there in 1984, it means they must have expanded the Airport between ’84 and ’86. This neighborhood was then demolished in order to create more room/space for the Airport. Hooker Inn (parody on Holiday Inn) (the red building) is still there. The crane in southern Vice Port (to on/offload the cargo ships) is still there. A few trees/bushes have been added/removed. 31. South of the Fuel Tanks: 2 New Guys (viewed from west) See images #30 and #33 for the same character. There’s something obstructing our view at the left (shown by the red dot). It may be from the trailer park. Now there are telephone wires here. Two trees have been added. 32. South of the Fuel Tanks: Hooker Inn (viewed from northeast) All the shrubbery in 1986 is gone, replaced by trees in 1984. I think a few trees have been moved as well. You can still see the buildings in the background. The Hooker Inn has a new model and textures. 33. Trailer Park: Sunshine Autos (viewed from north) See images #30 and #31 for the same character. That’s probably a remodeled version of the Quadbike from SA. Sunshine Autos is on the right. From this image, we can see that the trailer park will be around Sunshine Autos. 34. Bridge between Vice Port and Ocean Beach (viewed from north) That may be a new boat or it is a Jetmax. Notice the container ship is gone in 1984 (shown by the arrow). This was the ship you had to steal the counterfeit plates for the Print Works asset in Vice City. In the background on the left, you can see 2 gray buildings infront of the Marina. However, in reality, the marina is of course infront of the 2 grey buildings. I think this may be a mistake. Downtown 35. VCPD Helipad (viewed from northeast) That’s probably the new rocket launcher. The helicopter is a VCPD Maverick (most probably shot down with an RPG by our beloved Victor). Above the helicopter, there seems to be a Construction Crane (possibly working on “Moist Palms” Hotel) on the left and some other construction (or an antenna of some sort) on the right. There is a new staircase to the right of the helicopter. Perhaps Victor has to use these stairs in some way (why else would R* put them in?). 36. Infront of “Moist Palms” Hotel (viewed from north) On the left, the bridge is still there (it is not the railing of the bank). We cannot see the Trees from Leaf Links. We cannot see the Demolition Man construction. (Like in image #14, #15, #24 and #29) However, we can see the building to the right of it, showing that it isn’t a draw distance problem. The building on the right (building “2”) (which is not “Moist Palms” Hotel) has a new lighting. 37. King Knuts / Well Stacked Pizza (viewed from south) Obviously, Well Stacked Pizza Co. has been replaced by King Knuts. The Love Fist billboard has been removed. Many neon lights have been added to King Knuts, and 2 buildings on the right. The shrubbery has changed as well. Escobar International 38. Military Base (viewed from north) The trees have changed. The towers have been remodeled and one is moved to the right. The shrubbery has changed again. Almost everything has new textures. Can’t Find Location 39 + 40. Can’t find the locations For 39, on the right, I know that the building is from Little Havana and the bridge is from Little Haiti. But where exactly the islands are, I don’t know. ______________________________________________________ That’s it. Please note: All assumptions and conclusions made in this topic, are made only through analysis of and early build of the game shown to Gamepro, OPS2M, and GamesTM magazines. Do not fully assume that this will be the final build, and that Malibu, Leaf Links, etc. are missing from the actual game. If there are any mistakes, please correct. I’ll try to stay updated. TheDude5000
Most likely a bug involving the near-distance/lod models not loading properly. Unless it's possible to actually create an island, and do it in less than two years. EDIT: Oh..and uh, you might wanna remove those screens. R* asked if we could not show any scans of that article. TheDude5000
I dont think R* is going to have us believe that Leaf Links was completely man made, and that it was created in two years.. Also.. in one of those pics.. i noticed a shark Beware of the waters Ocean Beach doesn't have a pier. If you look at the sky, it usually looks different on each island. On the island you start in (this is based on VC), whent he sun sets the sky's blue and it's just a big yellow and orange glow. On the other island, I noticed that the sky starts turning orange, unlike the other island. So if that holds true with VCS, then the Chunder Wheel is on the second island. But to each his/her own. Rown
Yeah these probably shouldn't be up if R* made adamcs pull the scans. But as long as their still up. 6: That kind of looks like Starfish Island 7: I heard someone say thats Little Havana. They cleared up the image. It looks mostly like low buildings, and almost too close to them to be the beach. 9: Again that kind of looks like Stafish but I can't be sure. 10: Thats a bridge entrance in the background. I'm thinking the one by Vice Port too. Rown

arntf
Also.. in one of those pics.. i noticed a shark Beware of the waters There were sharks in the water in GTA:VC, which is what you saw in that screenshot. Since there was no swimming then, there wasn't much chance of shark attacks. But, what with GTA:VCS featuring swimming, perhaps (hopefully?) there will be a chance to get mauled by a Great White as well? It would certainly add a new dimension to swimming, as the dolphins, tortoises and schools of fish in GTA:SA posed absolutely no threat whatsoever and subsequently became nice but boring 'scenery'.
