Amazing Special Effects Shot for 1939

Recommended Posts

Jordan

So I finally saw Gone With The Wind and now understand why it's considered by many to be the greatest film of all time. There is no way in hell that this could be remade today with modern actors. But, the one thing I was most shaken by was the final special effects shot.

It is so amazing. I put up the last few minutes over at YouTube and I recommend watching the whole bit I put up...it's only 3 minutes:

The final shot with the music and all and the lighting they went for on the miniature set looks so damned amazing...I can't even begin to imagine the emotion going through people's heads in 1939 when they saw this at the beginning of WWII.

In the final shot, look at the tree limbs as they shake rapidly. That gives away that they are miniature models, but it's still amazing, and it is a PHYSICAL EFFECTS shot, not digital!

Physical > Digital

GONE WITH THE WIND AIRS TONIGHT ON Turner Classic Movies (TCM) at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time!

By the way, watch Gone With The Wind with a girl biggrin.gif

Is "fegs" the new "fags" ?

Kind of like how it went from "newbie" to "newb" to "n00b" to "nob"...

Anyway, there are few old movies that interest me, but this one was done well.

It was a great movie. If someone didn't like it...too bad! Your comments won't change anyone elses views or opinion.

f*cking loved the lighting, but wasn't too much digging the miniature effects. Or the whole 'another day' sh*ts. I bet that night her house burned down and somebody defiled her charred corpse. Another f*cking day.

But seriously, they should have followed that 'There must be another way to bring him back..' line with 'Voodoo.' It would leave it open for a killer sequel.

lol, I might edit that together, and add my voice "with voodoo" and then cue the Twilight Zone theme song smile.gif

I'm not seeing why those effects are impressive.

For one, that movie was most expensive ever made at the time, they had the money to blow it all on effects. The burning of Atlanta is more impressive than the ending, but then all they did was burn the sets they were using.

Gone With The Wind is a 3 and a half hour romance movie. Better advice would be to watch it as a girl.

The silent era has much more impressive effects, see The General, Safety Last and of course Metropolis for example.
