MMFF
I don't think they are trying to base it on movies. That may be just coincidence(If only I was a 8 year old kid from that spelling bee on TV) Well, maybe VC was trying for the Scarface feel, but I don't think SA was planned that way. Plus it's kind of hard to guess a movie when we know nothing about the game yet.
FelipeVinhao
I think it's partially coincidence. They don't make the game 100% based on a movie, but they frequently add references about some movies or other games, just to make some jokes.
NeonHandshake
I hope you guys are kidding. Vice City WAS pretty much Scarface and if you just look at his mansion then there is no way you can deny that. Clear references to other films like Pulp Fiction too. However, that film was about drugs, so you'd hope they don't just do another one two games later, eh? Jake
Vice had a lot of Scarface references in it..and also I'm sure the next GTA will have atleast a little influence from a movie.
GTA3Freak-2001
Still I don't think Rockstar go hmm this movie sounds good lets use it, they take bits from here and there adding tributes to the movies. Although Vice City was probably slightly different since it was heavily based on Scarface, the mansion, the 80's miami, drug lords, trippy 80's pop music. The big connection here is that GTA3's Flash FM radio station featured several songs straight from the Scarface soundtrack (Push it To The Limit, She's On Fire, Rush Rush) and as it turned out it was a hint to Vice City. Gamer2255668
Drugs is the common theme throughout the GTA3 trilogy. Vice City's storyline revolved around the cocaine trafficking of Miami in the 80s. San Andreas's storyline revolved around the crack epidemic of the big cities in the early 90s. Rockstar will probably draw from movies that deal with drugs in modern society. saintdave
I wouldn’t say they base each game on a particular movie that some or all of the creators like. The games have been heavily influenced by movies that’s for sure, but also not only movies, TV, music and allsorts of other things. VC had influences from Scarface and Miami Vice. All game creators use movies as a basic idea or something they think is cool during it that would suit or fit into their game well and Rockstar is no different. Mike0
They could go in each of this ways: base the game on some movies or make the game its own "movie" so people would talk about the storyline in the game like it was some good movie. They want to blend the borders between a movie and a game. The game would be an interactive movie. Like a movie + you can play in it. I think we should look for hints for GTA IV in GTA III. Or they will make something completely different and we are all wrong:)
phroedoux
If you look, there are obvious references to all kinds of pop culture. Movies are no different. Some of the pilot rankings in SanAn are the same pilot rankings in Top Gun. The mansion in VC, but more overtly, the direct resemblance to Miami Vice. Kaufman cabs (andy kaufman was one of many co-stars in Taxi) Mission titles Cop Land, and No Escape were movies starrd by the voice of Tommy Vercetti. VC had more pop culture (and other, Pablo Escobar 'Escobar International' was big into cocaine trafficing a while back) than any other game. Its only natural they'd model it after a movie. I don't think this is quits as true of SanAn or GTA 3.
The-end
Gta is gta, there not all based of some big tiem movie, havn't you noticed all of them get there own crappy little game a few days before the movie is released Gta doesnt aim at making a rip-off of a film, sure it makes references, especially vice but still they dont copyever aspect from movies. Watch scarface, then play through Vice City. VC very closely emulates Scarface, no doubt about it. It also emulates Miami Vice, and no one is complaining about that. VC has the same backstory as Scarface, and makes direct references to it throughout the game. C'mon, you can even dress the same.
PokerPlayer22
I dun dont be thinkin IV will be based on da movies cuh I dont see none links between SA and Boyz N Da Hood. Not to mention, the only Scarface related element of VC was the house. What else? I don't need to hear "Watch scarface youll see". Ive watched Scarface enough times to go blind, and I see no similarities aside from the crime. But if we're going to play the crime game pull out a huge list of movies. GTA III didnt seem to be based on any movie.
ybakker
ur a turd ^^^^^^^ what u think Apartment 3c was referring to?!? (its a VC easter egg) and the last mission, when you defend yourself from this wave of armed mobsters trying to kill you?!?!? How bout this?: and then watch the intro movie to Vice city. Then go to Vercetti Estate and go into the bar... actually just go to this site If you don't see the similarities, well then... why don't you go somewhere else? phroedoux
Dude, they share a plot, backstory, location, and concept design, what more do you want? you want it written down somewhere? From IMDB's profile on VC (yeah, they do games as well.... I was suprised too.) http://imdb.com/title/tt0314123/trivia # The game emulates the movie _Scarface (1980)_ : a low life thug leaves a place he doesn't want to be (Prison/Cuba) and moves to Miami (or in VC's case, Vice City), gets caught up in a riot, wears flowery shirts, and begins to take over the city, with a chaotic ending battle. The apartment where Tony's friend was killed is featured, along with the area known as Little Havana that was featured at the begining of the film, and two nightclubs (The Malibu, Pole Position Club) are clones of two nightclubs in the film (The Babylon, and the Little Havana Club)
Mike0
All 3D GTAs are inspired by movies. Its a fact. Rockstar employees like to watch alot of movies. They were even ordered to do so before making GTA III.
TheDude5000
It's quite obvious that VC was inspired by Miami Vice and Scarface. R* even said that Scarface was the biggest inspiration for Vice City. And Boys In The Hood did influence SA. So did many early 90's LA movies, including Falling Down. Even Burger Shot is a reference to Whammy Burger, where the main character, Bill Foster, pulls out an Uzi. The cinematography, the heat-hazes, the music, it just feels alot like these early 90's LA movies. They even modeled the Infernus after the Acura that The Wolf drives in Pulp Fiction. Alot of the gang member character models are modeled after characters from Boys In The Hood, and Ryder is obviously modeled after Eazy-E. I wouldn't say R* aimed to make full scale adaptations of these movies/shows, but the inspiration is quite apparent, particularly in VC. I'd say creating a strong, accurate atmosphere and representation of a certain time and place, is one of the R*s' greatest talents. BTW guys, I seriously reccommend you check out Falling Down. The resemblence to SA is just incredible, from Gangland, to the Pier south of Vine/Hollywood, this is a perfect movie to watch to get you in the mood for some SA. (i cant spell the name) (I thinks that is wright) the story line is like ..... well....im not sure. but its nothing like scarface becouse the scarface game is the same as the movie and the story line in gta vc is not like scarface story line. but parts of it are like it. but its based after a lot. its all so confusing. bye
