Fozzy Fozborne
I have an ancient Dell 4300 (assembled in December 2001, shipped January 2002) It has the following parts: Pentium 1.60 Ghz (Prescott) CPU 256 MB RAM (PC133) Nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX400 Dell 4300 MOBO (couldn't find make or model) I recently purchased a Viking 512 MB Memory Chip and a Nvidia GeForce 6200 My one question is, will the RAM work? Some places I have read say that you need proprietary RAM direct from Dell, and some others say it only supports 512 MB, I'm going to have 768MB. Another question is the speed of my CPU, only 1.6 Ghz, will that be a bottle neck? Lastly, the AGP slot on my MoBo is only 4X, is that a problem versus 8X? THX Oh, and this computer will only be used to tide us over until Vista comes out, when we get our new computer, it's not really necessary it's the ultimate computer, just so I don't have to play HL2 at 640X480 on all low settings. Also, thanks to all the people who helped my buying the ibuypower computer for my room, it's still working great, and was really cheap. Rocketkiller
I don't know much about dells, but the ram chould work. The video card will owrk in 4x, but it'll be slower and may have problems. At least that's what happened with my old ECS mobo and a radeon 9600pro.
GTA3Freak-2001
RAM could be a problem, an HP I had would only work with RAM from HP which costs about 3 times as much as a third-party brand of the same speed and type. Trial and error is the only way you are going to find out. Having a 4x AGP slot will hardly effect performance for a 8x AGP Card but considering your current specs the performance gained would be useless. Fozzy Fozborne
Now, if I wanted to upgrade from my P4, to this would I need a different motherboard, or do they both use the same socket?
Sixdust
If you are making a switch from one brand to another, you need another motherboard, or if you are switching sockets. My opinion: Dont waste your money on such a crappy chip, save up some cash and then get the cheapest intel conroe, like $180 , its dual core, its 64bit and miles ahead of AMD. it will be released late July (launch date is the 23rd) The base models are whipping the floor with the best overclocked Amd chip. Just be a patient person and you shall be rewarded.
Fozzy Fozborne
Ok, I got my new stuff. I was wondering... my new graphics card has 2 monitor ports, could I make one go 640X480 and the other 10ave them both plugged in right now24? I h, but I hate having my screen resolution so low on my newer monitor. BTW, the new stuff rox, 3x the memory, and a much faster vid card for $85. NVM, I figured it out, I didn't have the latest drivers. Edited June 6, 2006 by Fozzy Fozborne
